Realizacija drugog dijela briljantne "Francuske veze" dogodila se nakon što je vršnjački akcijski krimić iz 1971. "Prljavi Harry" dobio nastavak. Ako može policajac Harry Calahan ponovno u akciju, zašto ne bi mogao i jednako okorjeli murjak Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle – pomislili su u studiju 20th Century Fox.

Na koncu Doyleov film je zaradio više nego Callahanov u američkim kinima, a i osvojio pet Oscara, uključujući najbolji film, režiju Williama Friedkina i glavnu mušku ulogu Genea Hackmana. Međutim, "Dirty Harry" nije završio tako moralno dvosmisleno i neodređeno u duhu kinematografije sedamdesetih kao "The French Connection".

Zbog toga se "Francuska veza II" ("French Connection II", 1975.) čini načelno nepotrebnim kao film koji otkriva što se dalje dogodilo s (anti)junakom i remeti nedefinirani kraj prethodnika, otprilike kao i nastavak "Špilje užasa". Nepotrebnost je potencirao odlazak Friedkina s pozicije redatelja nakon što se okrenuo "Istjerivaču đavola" i "Nadnici straha", kao i nedostupnost Roya Scheidera, zauzetog snimanjem "Ralja", da reprizira ulogu Doyleova partnera Buddyja "Cloudyja" Russa.

Novom redatelju nije lako nadmašiti Friedkinov prijelomni akcijski, dokudramski hiper-realizam i nezaboravne trenutke koji su zrcalili "Francusku vezu" i karakter Popeyea, od njegova prerušavanja u Djeda Mraza i brutalnog ispitivanja osumnjičenika, do prekretničke dokumentarističke automobilističke potjere za sumnjivcem u vlaku kroz gusti promet New Yorka i pucanja u leđa odbjeglu negativcu.

Ipak, taj novi redatelj je iskusni žanrovac John Frankenheimer ("Ptičar iz Alcatraza", "Mandžurijski kandidat", "Grand Prix"), a i Popeye je karakterni forte prvog filma i njemu ne treba nužno partner koliko je jedinstven i dominantan kao lik. Preuzevši režiju, Frankehneimer je odbio snimiti nastavak u stilu "Klopke za inspektora Callahana" (isti grad, različiti negativci) i napravio je inverziju.

Radnja je premještena iz New Yorka u Marseille, kamo Popeye dolazi u potragu za zlikovcem iz prvog filma, dilerom droge Alainom Charnierom (Fernando Rey; "Viridiana"), kako bi zauvijek razbio njegov krijumčarski lanac. "New York je loš za zdravlje", kaže Charnier u Marseilleu.

Premještaj lokacije je dvojake naravi. Osvježenje je vidjeti urbanu sredinu izvan SAD-a i Marseille nije valjda bio ovako dobro snimljen u američkom filmu sve do pojave "Stillwatera", zahvaljujući Frankenheimeru koji je imao dobar osjećaj za miris i okus lučkog francuskog grada.

U isti mah, "Marseilles nije New York", kako netko potvrdi u "French Connection II". Američki velegrad bio je zaseban lik u originalu, jednako kao San Francisco u "Prljavom Harryju", urbana džungla presudna za karakterizaciju Popeyea, žestokog policajca koji je preslik samog New Yorka i "vice versa" (nemilosrdan, užurban, kaotičan).

Dolaskom u Marseille newyorški policajac postaje lik iz "riba izvan vode" filma, što je podvučeno uvodnom scenom na ribarnici, gdje upoznaje lokalnog inspektora i budućeg kvazi-partnera Henryja Barthelemyja (Bernard Fresson) s kojim će se često rječkati.

"Ovdje imamo pravog američkog heroja. Dan D u Marseilleu, Amerikanci su se iskrcali... Poslat ću nekoga po špinat", Barthelemy zavitlava Popeyea u scenama koje povremeno skreću u sferu akcijske "buddy" komedije i prijete suspregnuti izvornu kriminalističku sirovost "Francuske veze".

Frankheimer u pravom momentu uvodi dramu i subvertira očekivanja kad Charnier organizira otmicu Popeyea i u zatočeništvu kriminalci pretvaraju murjaka u heroinskog ovisnika. Ironično, Popeye postaje očajnički ovisnik kakve kao policajac lovi cijeli život. Hvalevrijedna ironija i subverzija u vezi centralnog lika omogućuje Hackmanu neke od njegovih najimpresivnijih glumačkih bravura ("Prisluškivanje", "Nepomirljivi"), tj. ulogu vrijednu još jedne oskarovske nomincije.

Istodobno, sve to usporava film do te točke da je pitanje može li povratiti momentum zapleta i nastaviti biti tvrdi akcijski krimić stare škole. Odgovor na pitanje je srećom potvrdan i zadnja trećina je prilično uzbudljiva na tragu izvornika, zaokružujući film kao inferioran, ali respektabilan nastavak koji ne slijedi svaki korak često oponašanog prethodnika.

Klimaks u "French Connection II" otpada na višeminutnu potjeru "na noge", izvrsno režiranu na granici akcijskog dokumentarizma, s povremenim inventivnim subjektivnim kadrovima. Popeye trči, trči i trči po prometnim ulicama Marseillea, sve do jednog od najpamtljivijih posljednjih kadrova iz sedamdesetih, kad Frankenheimer okončava potjeru uz doslovni "final shot".

John Frankenheimer se vratio u Francusku 20-ak godina kasnije i snimio akcijski triler "Ronin" s kojim je orkestrirao potjere dostojne "Francuske veze".

Realizacija drugog dijela briljantne "Francuske veze" dogodila se nakon što je vršnjački akcijski krimić iz 1971. "Prljavi Harry" dobio nastavak. Ako može policajac Harry Calahan ponovno u akciju, zašto ne bi mogao i jednako okorjeli murjak Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle – pomislili su u studiju 20th Century Fox.

Na koncu Doyleov film je zaradio više nego Callahanov u američkim kinima, a i osvojio pet Oscara, uključujući najbolji film, režiju Williama Friedkina i glavnu mušku ulogu Genea Hackmana. Međutim, "Dirty Harry" nije završio tako moralno dvosmisleno i neodređeno u duhu kinematografije sedamdesetih kao "The French Connection".

Zbog toga se "Francuska veza II" ("French Connection II", 1975.) čini načelno nepotrebnim kao film koji otkriva što se dalje dogodilo s (anti)junakom i remeti nedefinirani kraj prethodnika, otprilike kao i nastavak "Špilje užasa". Nepotrebnost je potencirao odlazak Friedkina s pozicije redatelja nakon što se okrenuo "Istjerivaču đavola" i "Nadnici straha", kao i nedostupnost Roya Scheidera, zauzetog snimanjem "Ralja", da reprizira ulogu Doyleova partnera Buddyja "Cloudyja" Russa.

Novom redatelju nije lako nadmašiti Friedkinov prijelomni akcijski, dokudramski hiper-realizam i nezaboravne trenutke koji su zrcalili "Francusku vezu" i karakter Popeyea, od njegova prerušavanja u Djeda Mraza i brutalnog ispitivanja osumnjičenika, do prekretničke dokumentarističke automobilističke potjere za sumnjivcem u vlaku kroz gusti promet New Yorka i pucanja u leđa odbjeglu negativcu.

Ipak, taj novi redatelj je iskusni žanrovac John Frankenheimer ("Ptičar iz Alcatraza", "Mandžurijski kandidat", "Grand Prix"), a i Popeye je karakterni forte prvog filma i njemu ne treba nužno partner koliko je jedinstven i dominantan kao lik. Preuzevši režiju, Frankehneimer je odbio snimiti nastavak u stilu "Klopke za inspektora Callahana" (isti grad, različiti negativci) i napravio je inverziju.

Radnja je premještena iz New Yorka u Marseille, kamo Popeye dolazi u potragu za zlikovcem iz prvog filma, dilerom droge Alainom Charnierom (Fernando Rey; "Viridiana"), kako bi zauvijek razbio njegov krijumčarski lanac. "New York je loš za zdravlje", kaže Charnier u Marseilleu.

Premještaj lokacije je dvojake naravi. Osvježenje je vidjeti urbanu sredinu izvan SAD-a i Marseille nije valjda bio ovako dobro snimljen u američkom filmu sve do pojave "Stillwatera", zahvaljujući Frankenheimeru koji je imao dobar osjećaj za miris i okus lučkog francuskog grada.

U isti mah, "Marseilles nije New York", kako netko potvrdi u "French Connection II". Američki velegrad bio je zaseban lik u originalu, jednako kao San Francisco u "Prljavom Harryju", urbana džungla presudna za karakterizaciju Popeyea, žestokog policajca koji je preslik samog New Yorka i "vice versa" (nemilosrdan, užurban, kaotičan).

Dolaskom u Marseille newyorški policajac postaje lik iz "riba izvan vode" filma, što je podvučeno uvodnom scenom na ribarnici, gdje upoznaje lokalnog inspektora i budućeg kvazi-partnera Henryja Barthelemyja (Bernard Fresson) s kojim će se često rječkati.

"Ovdje imamo pravog američkog heroja. Dan D u Marseilleu, Amerikanci su se iskrcali... Poslat ću nekoga po špinat", Barthelemy zavitlava Popeyea u scenama koje povremeno skreću u sferu akcijske "buddy" komedije i prijete suspregnuti izvornu kriminalističku sirovost "Francuske veze".

Frankheimer u pravom momentu uvodi dramu i subvertira očekivanja kad Charnier organizira otmicu Popeyea i u zatočeništvu kriminalci pretvaraju murjaka u heroinskog ovisnika. Ironično, Popeye postaje očajnički ovisnik kakve kao policajac lovi cijeli život. Hvalevrijedna ironija i subverzija u vezi centralnog lika omogućuje Hackmanu neke od njegovih najimpresivnijih glumačkih bravura ("Prisluškivanje", "Nepomirljivi"), tj. ulogu vrijednu još jedne oskarovske nomincije.

Istodobno, sve to usporava film do te točke da je pitanje može li povratiti momentum zapleta i nastaviti biti tvrdi akcijski krimić stare škole. Odgovor na pitanje je srećom potvrdan i zadnja trećina je prilično uzbudljiva na tragu izvornika, zaokružujući film kao inferioran, ali respektabilan nastavak koji ne slijedi svaki korak često oponašanog prethodnika.

Klimaks u "French Connection II" otpada na višeminutnu potjeru "na noge", izvrsno režiranu na granici akcijskog dokumentarizma, s povremenim inventivnim subjektivnim kadrovima. Popeye trči, trči i trči po prometnim ulicama Marseillea, sve do jednog od najpamtljivijih posljednjih kadrova iz sedamdesetih, kad Frankenheimer okončava potjeru uz doslovni "final shot".

Frankenheimer opet u Francuskoj

John Frankenheimer se vratio u Francusku 20-ak godina kasnije i snimio akcijski triler "Ronin" s kojim je orkestrirao potjere dostojne "Francuske veze".

Nepotrebnost je potencirao odlazak Friedkina s pozicije redatelja nakon što se okrenuo "Istjerivaču đavola" i "Nadnici straha", kao i nedostupnost Roya Scheidera, zauzetog snimanjem "Ralja", da reprizira ulogu Doyleova partnera Buddyja "Cloudyja" Russa.

Novom redatelju nije lako nadmašiti Friedkinov prijelomni akcijski, dokudramski hiper-realizam i nezaboravne trenutke koji su zrcalili "Francusku vezu" i karakter Popeyea, od njegova prerušavanja u Djeda Mraza i brutalnog ispitivanja osumnjičenika, do prekretničke dokumentarističke automobilističke potjere za sumnjivcem u vlaku kroz gusti promet New Yorka i pucanja u leđa odbjeglu negativcu.

Ipak, taj novi redatelj je iskusni žanrovac John Frankenheimer ("Ptičar iz Alcatraza", "Mandžurijski kandidat", "Grand Prix"), a i Popeye je karakterni forte prvog filma i njemu ne treba nužno partner koliko je jedinstven i dominantan kao lik. Preuzevši režiju, Frankehneimer je odbio snimiti nastavak u stilu "Klopke za inspektora Callahana" (isti grad, različiti negativci) i napravio je inverziju.

Radnja je premještena iz New Yorka u Marseille, kamo Popeye dolazi u potragu za zlikovcem iz prvog filma, dilerom droge Alainom Charnierom (Fernando Rey; "Viridiana"), kako bi zauvijek razbio njegov krijumčarski lanac. "New York je loš za zdravlje", kaže Charnier u Marseilleu.

Premještaj lokacije je dvojake naravi. Osvježenje je vidjeti urbanu sredinu izvan SAD-a i Marseille nije valjda bio ovako dobro snimljen u američkom filmu sve do pojave "Stillwatera", zahvaljujući Frankenheimeru koji je imao dobar osjećaj za miris i okus lučkog francuskog grada.

U isti mah, "Marseilles nije New York", kako netko potvrdi u "French Connection II". Američki velegrad bio je zaseban lik u originalu, jednako kao San Francisco u "Prljavom Harryju", urbana džungla presudna za karakterizaciju Popeyea, žestokog policajca koji je preslik samog New Yorka i "vice versa" (nemilosrdan, užurban, kaotičan).

Dolaskom u Marseille newyorški policajac postaje lik iz "riba izvan vode" filma, što je podvučeno uvodnom scenom na ribarnici, gdje upoznaje lokalnog inspektora i budućeg kvazi-partnera Henryja Barthelemyja (Bernard Fresson) s kojim će se često rječkati.

"Ovdje imamo pravog američkog heroja. Dan D u Marseilleu, Amerikanci su se iskrcali... Poslat ću nekoga po špinat", Barthelemy zavitlava Popeyea u scenama koje povremeno skreću u sferu akcijske "buddy" komedije i prijete suspregnuti izvornu kriminalističku sirovost "Francuske veze".

Frankheimer u pravom momentu uvodi dramu i subvertira očekivanja kad Charnier organizira otmicu Popeyea i u zatočeništvu kriminalci pretvaraju murjaka u heroinskog ovisnika. Ironično, Popeye postaje očajnički ovisnik kakve kao policajac lovi cijeli život. Hvalevrijedna ironija i subverzija u vezi centralnog lika omogućuje Hackmanu neke od njegovih najimpresivnijih glumačkih bravura ("Prisluškivanje", "Nepomirljivi"), tj. ulogu vrijednu još jedne oskarovske nomincije.

Istodobno, sve to usporava film do te točke da je pitanje može li povratiti momentum zapleta i nastaviti biti tvrdi akcijski krimić stare škole. Odgovor na pitanje je srećom potvrdan i zadnja trećina je prilično uzbudljiva na tragu izvornika, zaokružujući film kao inferioran, ali respektabilan nastavak koji ne slijedi svaki korak često oponašanog prethodnika.

Klimaks u "French Connection II" otpada na višeminutnu potjeru "na noge", izvrsno režiranu na granici akcijskog dokumentarizma, s povremenim inventivnim subjektivnim kadrovima. Popeye trči, trči i trči po prometnim ulicama Marseillea, sve do jednog od najpamtljivijih posljednjih kadrova iz sedamdesetih, kad Frankenheimer okončava potjeru uz doslovni "final shot".

Frankenheimer opet u Francuskoj

John Frankenheimer se vratio u Francusku 20-ak godina kasnije i snimio akcijski triler "Ronin" s kojim je orkestrirao potjere dostojne "Francuske veze".
