Brakorazvodna drama “Marriage Story” osvojila je 2019. šest nominacija za Oscara i privela kraju tranziciju Noaha Baumbacha od američkog nezavisnog do oskarovskog filmaša. Bilo je tada jasno da za Baumbacha slijede budžetski veći i ambiciozniji filmovi u odnosu na “Lignju i kita”, “Margot na vjenčanju”, “Greenberga”, “Frances Ha”, “Ljubavnicu Amerike”...

Tri godine poslije Baumbach je to potvrdio s novim projektom “Bijela buka” (“White Noise”), koji je osvanuo na Netflixu na prijelazu godine nakon venecijanske premijere u rujnu. Proračun “Bijele buke” iznosio je pozamašnih 80 milijuna dolara, više nego svi dosadašnji Baumbachovi filmovi.

Toliko je, naime, Baumbach potrošio da bi filmovao istoimeni roman Dona DeLilloa iz 1985. godine. Baumbachove ambicije bile su goleme: ekranizirati roman koji se godinama smatrao nefilmičnim, a kad se pogleda tonalno i žanrovski raštrkan film, jasno je i zašto.

K tome, ekranizirajući “White Noise”, Baumbach je htio ostati vjeran svojim “indie” korijenima i oskarovskim težnjama te objediniti Woodyja Allena, Wesa Andersona, Stevena Spielberga i Davida Lyncha kako bi izašao na kraj s egzistencijalnim, satirično-(crno)komičnim, katastrofičnim, psihološko-dramskim i nadrealnim dijelovima romana.

Prethodna Baumbachova ostvarenja imala su u sebi nešto “woodyallenovsko” i “wesandersonovsko”, ali “spielbergovski” i “lynchovski” film za njega su nepoznat teren, što potencira “hit&miss” neujednačenosti “Bijele buke”. Slično romanu, radnja se odvija u osamdesetima, a u prvom planu nalazi se Jack Gladney (Adam Driver), sredovječni fakultetski profesor koji predaje nacizam i živi sa suprugom Babette (Greta Gerwig) i čoporom djece iz njihova prijašnja četiri braka.

Prije nego što upoznamo Jacka, upoznat ćemo nakratko njegova kolegu, profesora Murrayja Siskinda (Don Cheadle), tijekom predavanja o sudarima u američkim filmovima, čime Baumbach najavljuje da će biti sudara i u “White Noise”, i to kakvih. Dotad pratimo Jacka i njegove tjeskobe, očitovane u kvazihororskim košmarima s plahtom da izgleda da mu neki duh pravi društvo u sobi (“netko je bio tu s nama”, “kao da propadam u sebe”), ali i razgovorima s Babette o tome tko bi od njih trebao umrijeti prvi.

S obzirom na to da Driver i Gerwig nisu blizu sredovječja, teško je povjerovati u njihove tjeskobe i strahove od smrti, za što kao okidač služe (i) katastrofe na TV-u, ali Baumbach to nastoji prikriti time što povlači paralele s kolektivnim traumama naše koronske sadašnjosti, posebice kad se “Bijela buka” u središnjem i najboljem dijelu pretvori u film katastrofe.

Nakon što dođe do sudara cisterne i teretnog vlaka s vagonima punima toksičnih materijala, Jack i njegova familija prisiljeni su na evakuaciju. Za jednog neakcijskog redatelja, Baumbach pokazuje Spielbergov nerv za “sense of wonder” spektakl sa specijalnim efektima, sudarima na cestama i bildanjem panike dok Jackova obitelj i mnogi drugi bježe od oblaka smrtonosnih kemikalija.

Međutim, čak i tu “White Noise” postaje neravnomjeran budući da na trenutke izgleda kao da bi se mogao pretvoriti u obiteljsku komediju “Godišnji odmor snova”, samo s izjavama tipa “Familija je kolijevka svih dezinformacija”. Nije problem u mijenjaju žanrovskih registara ako je to izvedeno prirodno, a ne pretenciozno.

Ovdje to nije slučaj, stoga je napose problematična zadnja trećina filma, kad Babette prizna da pije tablete protiv straha od smrti i radnja se preseli na Lynchov teren s preforsiranom čudnovatosti i ekscentričnosti (“Što je noć? Ponavlja se sedam puta tjedno, gdje je tu posebnost?”). Spielbergove tragove Baumbach je još nekako i kadar slijediti, Lynchove baš i ne.

Greta i ‘Barbie‘

Greta Gerwig, inače Baumbachova supruga, nadolazećeg će se ljeta nanovo predstaviti kao redateljica, i to nestrpljivo očekivanog filma “Barbie” s Margot Robbie u glavnoj ulozi.

Brakorazvodna drama “Marriage Story” osvojila je 2019. šest nominacija za Oscara i privela kraju tranziciju Noaha Baumbacha od američkog nezavisnog do oskarovskog filmaša. Bilo je tada jasno da za Baumbacha slijede budžetski veći i ambiciozniji filmovi u odnosu na “Lignju i kita”, “Margot na vjenčanju”, “Greenberga”, “Frances Ha”, “Ljubavnicu Amerike”...

Tri godine poslije Baumbach je to potvrdio s novim projektom “Bijela buka” (“White Noise”), koji je osvanuo na Netflixu na prijelazu godine nakon venecijanske premijere u rujnu. Proračun “Bijele buke” iznosio je pozamašnih 80 milijuna dolara, više nego svi dosadašnji Baumbachovi filmovi.

Toliko je, naime, Baumbach potrošio da bi filmovao istoimeni roman Dona DeLilloa iz 1985. godine. Baumbachove ambicije bile su goleme: ekranizirati roman koji se godinama smatrao nefilmičnim, a kad se pogleda tonalno i žanrovski raštrkan film, jasno je i zašto.

K tome, ekranizirajući “White Noise”, Baumbach je htio ostati vjeran svojim “indie” korijenima i oskarovskim težnjama te objediniti Woodyja Allena, Wesa Andersona, Stevena Spielberga i Davida Lyncha kako bi izašao na kraj s egzistencijalnim, satirično-(crno)komičnim, katastrofičnim, psihološko-dramskim i nadrealnim dijelovima romana.

Prethodna Baumbachova ostvarenja imala su u sebi nešto “woodyallenovsko” i “wesandersonovsko”, ali “spielbergovski” i “lynchovski” film za njega su nepoznat teren, što potencira “hit&miss” neujednačenosti “Bijele buke”. Slično romanu, radnja se odvija u osamdesetima, a u prvom planu nalazi se Jack Gladney (Adam Driver), sredovječni fakultetski profesor koji predaje nacizam i živi sa suprugom Babette (Greta Gerwig) i čoporom djece iz njihova prijašnja četiri braka.

Prije nego što upoznamo Jacka, upoznat ćemo nakratko njegova kolegu, profesora Murrayja Siskinda (Don Cheadle), tijekom predavanja o sudarima u američkim filmovima, čime Baumbach najavljuje da će biti sudara i u “White Noise”, i to kakvih. Dotad pratimo Jacka i njegove tjeskobe, očitovane u kvazihororskim košmarima s plahtom da izgleda da mu neki duh pravi društvo u sobi (“netko je bio tu s nama”, “kao da propadam u sebe”), ali i razgovorima s Babette o tome tko bi od njih trebao umrijeti prvi.

S obzirom na to da Driver i Gerwig nisu blizu sredovječja, teško je povjerovati u njihove tjeskobe i strahove od smrti, za što kao okidač služe (i) katastrofe na TV-u, ali Baumbach to nastoji prikriti time što povlači paralele s kolektivnim traumama naše koronske sadašnjosti, posebice kad se “Bijela buka” u središnjem i najboljem dijelu pretvori u film katastrofe.

Nakon što dođe do sudara cisterne i teretnog vlaka s vagonima punima toksičnih materijala, Jack i njegova familija prisiljeni su na evakuaciju. Za jednog neakcijskog redatelja, Baumbach pokazuje Spielbergov nerv za “sense of wonder” spektakl sa specijalnim efektima, sudarima na cestama i bildanjem panike dok Jackova obitelj i mnogi drugi bježe od oblaka smrtonosnih kemikalija.

Međutim, čak i tu “White Noise” postaje neravnomjeran budući da na trenutke izgleda kao da bi se mogao pretvoriti u obiteljsku komediju “Godišnji odmor snova”, samo s izjavama tipa “Familija je kolijevka svih dezinformacija”. Nije problem u mijenjaju žanrovskih registara ako je to izvedeno prirodno, a ne pretenciozno.

Ovdje to nije slučaj, stoga je napose problematična zadnja trećina filma, kad Babette prizna da pije tablete protiv straha od smrti i radnja se preseli na Lynchov teren s preforsiranom čudnovatosti i ekscentričnosti (“Što je noć? Ponavlja se sedam puta tjedno, gdje je tu posebnost?”). Spielbergove tragove Baumbach je još nekako i kadar slijediti, Lynchove baš i ne.

Greta i ‘Barbie‘

Greta Gerwig, inače Baumbachova supruga, nadolazećeg će se ljeta nanovo predstaviti kao redateljica, i to nestrpljivo očekivanog filma “Barbie” s Margot Robbie u glavnoj ulozi.
