Žudnja Ukrajinaca za raketnim sustavima kojima bi se mogli učinkovito suprotstaviti ruskom topništvu u borbama za Donbas laicima nije baš najjasnija, no doista je riječ o oružju s kojim bi u malo vremena mogli uspostaviti paritet brojnim i ubojitim ruskim topovima.

U oko dvije minute, jedna raketna baterija s devet lansera može ispaliti čak 108 raketa, što je ogromna prednost u uspostavi tzv. protubaterijske vatre, u ovom trenutku nužno potrebne Ukrajini. Po mnogim ekspertima, ovo bi oružje moglo rapidno promijeniti igru i Ukrajincima ubrzo pružiti šansu da se posve ravnopravno bore protiv ruskih snaga.

Klasična primjena raketnih sustava je upravo napadanje neprijateljskog topništva: sve artiljerijske jedinice su nepokretne kad pucaju i uvježbane da se brzo kreću kad ustreba. Zato je neprijateljske topničke položaje vrlo bitno pogoditi brzo i s jako puno projektila, a rakete su za taj posao puno superiornije od klasičnih topovskih cijevi. Rusi dosad nisu bili nimalo sramežljivi u korištenju svoje vatrene moći i rusko topništvo se, posljedično, pokazalo kao velika nevolja ukrajinskim snagama. U ukupnoj bilanci ukrajinskoga sukoba upravo je topništvo, a ne zrakoplovi ili drugi projektili, izazvalo većinu ubojitih razaranja.

U trenutku kad Sjedinjene Države isporučuju Ukrajini raketne sustave s protubaterijskim radarima dizajniranima za brzo pronalaženje ruskoga topništva nije teško prognozirati sigurnu skoru promjenu u terenskoj dominaciji. Radari uočavaju putanju neprijateljskih granata i učas izračunaju odakle je pucano, što omogućuje brzu protuvatru i uništenje napadačkih topničkih baterija.

Ništa manju važnost u uništenju ruskih položaja imaju i dronovi koji su također jako prikladni za brz izračun neprijateljskih topovskih lokacija. Neki tipovi dronova su u mogućnosti i sami raketno djelovati, no takvi modeli vatreno su limitirani i maksimalno opremljeni s dvije Hellfire rakete, što se ne može usporediti s kapacitetom modernoga raketnoga sustava.

Sjedinjene Države imaju dva raketna sustava dugoga dometa: višestruki raketni sustav (MLRS) i topnički raketni sustav visoke mobilnosti (HIMARS). Oba ispaljuju isto streljivo, ali kao platforme koriste različita vozila. Sjedinjene Države nemaju srednje ili male raketne sustave nalik na ruski 122 mm "Grad".

Oružje koje SAD ubrzo šalje Ukrajini najvjerojatnije je višecjevni raketni sustav M142 Himars. Koristi teški kamion za prijevoz jedne raketne kapsule sa šest raketa, čiji je domet oko 70 kilometara. To je otprilike ekvivalentno ruskom sustavu BM-27 Uragan koji odavno djeluje u Ukrajini. Kamion na kojemu je Himars smješten nema toliku mobilnost u vožnji kao gusjeničar, ali je puno lakši za održavanje. Drugi američki raketni sustav, MLRS, koristi oklopno vozilo bazirano na šasiji Bradleya M-2 i predstavlja rivala sovjetskom višecjevnom bacaču BM-30 Smerč, također angažiranom u Ukrajini.

Protubaterijska vatra s nenavođenim raketama bit će presudno važna u ovoj fazi ukrajinskog rata, no nabavka navođenih raketa za sustav Himars mogla bi tek radikalno promijeniti stanje na tamošnjem terenu. SAD su razvile takvu raketu za svoje višecjevne sustave 2000-ih, i intenzivno su je koristile u ratovima u Iraku i Afganistanu. Radarsko navođenje omogućuje raketi da pogodi s odstupanjem od samo 10 metara od nišanske točke, eliminirajući nesigurnost balističke disperzije i uvelike smanjujući broj raketa potrebnih za uništavanje zadanoga cilja.

Navođeni američki projektili već, po mnogima,  djeluju u Ukrajini, no riječ je o granatama tipa Excalibur koje se ispaljuju iz haubica M-777. Kako imaju ograničenja dometa kao i sve haubice, one ipak nisu prikladna zamjena za kvalitetne raketne sustave kao što je HIMARS.

HIMARS/MLRS sustavi mogu ispaljivati i posebno streljivo koje doseže iznimno velike udaljenosti od čak 300 kilometara, Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS). Takvi projektili i jesu bili povodom američko-ukrajinskih javnih nesuglasica oko nabavke raketnih sustava, jer u Washingtonu nisu željeli ni čuti o isporuci projektila kojima Kijev može gađati baze na ruskom tlu. Ove rakete s cijenom od preko milijun dolara po komadu SAD sigurno neće poslati Ukrajini: svrha takvog dalekometnog i skupog streljiva je napad na strateške ciljeve visoke vrijednosti poput stožera, logističkih čvorova ili zračnih luka gdje se zrakoplovi ne mogu koristiti zbog nedostupnosti ili ranjivosti, a u ukrajinskim bi rukama doveli do značajne eskalacije sukoba.

Opskrba Ukrajinaca američkim streljivom s primarnom svrhom gađanja ciljeva u Rusiji doživjela bi se i kao siguran signal širenja rata i kao potencijalna prijetnja ruskom režimu. Moskva će jamačno prosvjedovati i zbog američke opskrbe Kijeva HIMARS-om s redovitim raketama, ali tu pritužbu lako je odbaciti kao neutemeljenu jer Rusi također koriste ekvivalentne sustave.

Žudnja Ukrajinaca za raketnim sustavima kojima bi se mogli učinkovito suprotstaviti ruskom topništvu u borbama za Donbas laicima nije baš najjasnija, no doista je riječ o oružju s kojim bi u malo vremena mogli uspostaviti paritet brojnim i ubojitim ruskim topovima.

U oko dvije minute, jedna raketna baterija s devet lansera može ispaliti čak 108 raketa, što je ogromna prednost u uspostavi tzv. protubaterijske vatre, u ovom trenutku nužno potrebne Ukrajini. Po mnogim ekspertima, ovo bi oružje moglo rapidno promijeniti igru i Ukrajincima ubrzo pružiti šansu da se posve ravnopravno bore protiv ruskih snaga.

Klasična primjena raketnih sustava je upravo napadanje neprijateljskog topništva: sve artiljerijske jedinice su nepokretne kad pucaju i uvježbane da se brzo kreću kad ustreba. Zato je neprijateljske topničke položaje vrlo bitno pogoditi brzo i s jako puno projektila, a rakete su za taj posao puno superiornije od klasičnih topovskih cijevi. Rusi dosad nisu bili nimalo sramežljivi u korištenju svoje vatrene moći i rusko topništvo se, posljedično, pokazalo kao velika nevolja ukrajinskim snagama. U ukupnoj bilanci ukrajinskoga sukoba upravo je topništvo, a ne zrakoplovi ili drugi projektili, izazvalo većinu ubojitih razaranja.

U trenutku kad Sjedinjene Države isporučuju Ukrajini raketne sustave s protubaterijskim radarima dizajniranima za brzo pronalaženje ruskoga topništva nije teško prognozirati sigurnu skoru promjenu u terenskoj dominaciji. Radari uočavaju putanju neprijateljskih granata i učas izračunaju odakle je pucano, što omogućuje brzu protuvatru i uništenje napadačkih topničkih baterija.

Ništa manju važnost u uništenju ruskih položaja imaju i dronovi koji su također jako prikladni za brz izračun neprijateljskih topovskih lokacija. Neki tipovi dronova su u mogućnosti i sami raketno djelovati, no takvi modeli vatreno su limitirani i maksimalno opremljeni s dvije Hellfire rakete, što se ne može usporediti s kapacitetom modernoga raketnoga sustava.

Sjedinjene Države imaju dva raketna sustava dugoga dometa: višestruki raketni sustav (MLRS) i topnički raketni sustav visoke mobilnosti (HIMARS). Oba ispaljuju isto streljivo, ali kao platforme koriste različita vozila. Sjedinjene Države nemaju srednje ili male raketne sustave nalik na ruski 122 mm "Grad".

Oružje koje SAD ubrzo šalje Ukrajini najvjerojatnije je višecjevni raketni sustav M142 Himars. Koristi teški kamion za prijevoz jedne raketne kapsule sa šest raketa, čiji je domet oko 70 kilometara. To je otprilike ekvivalentno ruskom sustavu BM-27 Uragan koji odavno djeluje u Ukrajini. Kamion na kojemu je Himars smješten nema toliku mobilnost u vožnji kao gusjeničar, ali je puno lakši za održavanje. Drugi američki raketni sustav, MLRS, koristi oklopno vozilo bazirano na šasiji Bradleya M-2 i predstavlja rivala sovjetskom višecjevnom bacaču BM-30 Smerč, također angažiranom u Ukrajini.

Protubaterijska vatra s nenavođenim raketama bit će presudno važna u ovoj fazi ukrajinskog rata, no nabavka navođenih raketa za sustav Himars mogla bi tek radikalno promijeniti stanje na tamošnjem terenu. SAD su razvile takvu raketu za svoje višecjevne sustave 2000-ih, i intenzivno su je koristile u ratovima u Iraku i Afganistanu. Radarsko navođenje omogućuje raketi da pogodi s odstupanjem od samo 10 metara od nišanske točke, eliminirajući nesigurnost balističke disperzije i uvelike smanjujući broj raketa potrebnih za uništavanje zadanoga cilja.

Navođeni američki projektili već, po mnogima,  djeluju u Ukrajini, no riječ je o granatama tipa Excalibur koje se ispaljuju iz haubica M-777. Kako imaju ograničenja dometa kao i sve haubice, one ipak nisu prikladna zamjena za kvalitetne raketne sustave kao što je HIMARS.

HIMARS/MLRS sustavi mogu ispaljivati i posebno streljivo koje doseže iznimno velike udaljenosti od čak 300 kilometara, Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS). Takvi projektili i jesu bili povodom američko-ukrajinskih javnih nesuglasica oko nabavke raketnih sustava, jer u Washingtonu nisu željeli ni čuti o isporuci projektila kojima Kijev može gađati baze na ruskom tlu. Ove rakete s cijenom od preko milijun dolara po komadu SAD sigurno neće poslati Ukrajini: svrha takvog dalekometnog i skupog streljiva je napad na strateške ciljeve visoke vrijednosti poput stožera, logističkih čvorova ili zračnih luka gdje se zrakoplovi ne mogu koristiti zbog nedostupnosti ili ranjivosti, a u ukrajinskim bi rukama doveli do značajne eskalacije sukoba.

Opskrba Ukrajinaca američkim streljivom s primarnom svrhom gađanja ciljeva u Rusiji doživjela bi se i kao siguran signal širenja rata i kao potencijalna prijetnja ruskom režimu. Moskva će jamačno prosvjedovati i zbog američke opskrbe Kijeva HIMARS-om s redovitim raketama, ali tu pritužbu lako je odbaciti kao neutemeljenu jer Rusi također koriste ekvivalentne sustave.
