Republikanski tvrdolinijaši u Zastupničkom domu američkog Kongresa u utorak su tri puta spriječili izbor svog stranačkog kolege Kevina McCarthyja za predsjednika tog tijela.

Prvog dana izbora za čelnika donjeg doma Kongresa koji je djelovao kao obračun između dvadesetak tvrdolinijaša s ostala 202 člana republikanskog kluba, McCarthy u tri glasanja nije uspio dobiti 218 glasova potrebnih da postane predsjednik Zastupničkog doma.

Bio je to uznemirujući početak za novu republikansku većinu koji je ukazao na izazove s kojima bi se ta stranka mogla suočiti u sljedeće dvije godine, prije predsjedničkih izbora 2024. godine.

Njihova tanka većina od 222 spram 212 zastupnika omogućuje veći utjecaj maloj skupini tvrdolinijaša koji žele promjene pravila koje bi im dale snažniju kontrolu nad predsjednikom Doma i veći utjecaj na pristup stranke pitanjima potrošnje i zaduživanja.

Zastupnici su u utorak navečer odlučili novo glasovanje odgoditi do podneva u srijedu, što bi republikancima trebalo dati vremena da razmotre druge kandidate.

McCarthy je, međutim, u utorak obećao da će ostati u utrci za utjecajan položaj predsjednika Zastupničkog doma američkog Kongresa.

Kasno u utorak, McCarthy je rekao novinarima da ga je bivši predsjednik Donald Trump nazvao i ponovio svoju podršku. Trump je podržao McCarthyja u utrci i ostaje moćna osoba u Republikanskoj stranci.

Popularni konzervativni zastupnik 58-godišnji Jim Jordan, iz Ohija, osvojio je 20 glasova na posljednjem glasovanju dana, daleko od praga od 218 da postane predsjednik, ali dovoljno da zaustavi McCarthyja.

"Mislim da Kevin zna da mu je ovo zadnja prilika", rekao je zastupnik Kenneth Buck, koji je glasao za McCarthyja. Podsjetio je da je McCarthy prije toga 2015. pokušao postati čelnik zastupničkog doma no nije uspio zbog protivljenja konzervativaca, dodavši: "On više neće imati ovu priliku."

Odugovlačenje izbora čelnika moglo bi potkopati nade republikanaca u Zastupničkom domu da će brzo preuzeti nadzor nad istragama Bijele kuće i zakonodavnim prioritetima koji uključuju gospodarstvo, energetsku neovisnost SAD-a i sigurnost granica.

Vodeći demokrat u Domu, čelnik manjine u Zastupničkom domu, Hakeem Jeffries, nadmašio je McCarthyja u sva tri glasanja. U posljednjem glasovanju Jeffries je vodio pred McCarthyjem 212 prema 202 glasa, no za izbor predsjednika Doma potrebna je većina onih koji glasaju.

Posljednji put kada Zastupnički dom nije uspio izabrati predsjednika na prvom glasovanju bilo je 1923. godine.

Izbor predsjednika Zastupničkog doma možda je samo pitanje sati... ili tjedana: godine 1856. zastupnici su se dogovorili tek nakon dva mjeseca i 133 kruga.

Republikanski tvrdolinijaši u Zastupničkom domu američkog Kongresa u utorak su tri puta spriječili izbor svog stranačkog kolege Kevina McCarthyja za predsjednika tog tijela.

Prvog dana izbora za čelnika donjeg doma Kongresa koji je djelovao kao obračun između dvadesetak tvrdolinijaša s ostala 202 člana republikanskog kluba, McCarthy u tri glasanja nije uspio dobiti 218 glasova potrebnih da postane predsjednik Zastupničkog doma.

Bio je to uznemirujući početak za novu republikansku većinu koji je ukazao na izazove s kojima bi se ta stranka mogla suočiti u sljedeće dvije godine, prije predsjedničkih izbora 2024. godine.

Njihova tanka većina od 222 spram 212 zastupnika omogućuje veći utjecaj maloj skupini tvrdolinijaša koji žele promjene pravila koje bi im dale snažniju kontrolu nad predsjednikom Doma i veći utjecaj na pristup stranke pitanjima potrošnje i zaduživanja.

Zastupnici su u utorak navečer odlučili novo glasovanje odgoditi do podneva u srijedu, što bi republikancima trebalo dati vremena da razmotre druge kandidate.

McCarthy je, međutim, u utorak obećao da će ostati u utrci za utjecajan položaj predsjednika Zastupničkog doma američkog Kongresa.

Kasno u utorak, McCarthy je rekao novinarima da ga je bivši predsjednik Donald Trump nazvao i ponovio svoju podršku. Trump je podržao McCarthyja u utrci i ostaje moćna osoba u Republikanskoj stranci.

Popularni konzervativni zastupnik 58-godišnji Jim Jordan, iz Ohija, osvojio je 20 glasova na posljednjem glasovanju dana, daleko od praga od 218 da postane predsjednik, ali dovoljno da zaustavi McCarthyja.

"Mislim da Kevin zna da mu je ovo zadnja prilika", rekao je zastupnik Kenneth Buck, koji je glasao za McCarthyja. Podsjetio je da je McCarthy prije toga 2015. pokušao postati čelnik zastupničkog doma no nije uspio zbog protivljenja konzervativaca, dodavši: "On više neće imati ovu priliku."

Odugovlačenje izbora čelnika moglo bi potkopati nade republikanaca u Zastupničkom domu da će brzo preuzeti nadzor nad istragama Bijele kuće i zakonodavnim prioritetima koji uključuju gospodarstvo, energetsku neovisnost SAD-a i sigurnost granica.

Vodeći demokrat u Domu, čelnik manjine u Zastupničkom domu, Hakeem Jeffries, nadmašio je McCarthyja u sva tri glasanja. U posljednjem glasovanju Jeffries je vodio pred McCarthyjem 212 prema 202 glasa, no za izbor predsjednika Doma potrebna je većina onih koji glasaju.

Posljednji put kada Zastupnički dom nije uspio izabrati predsjednika na prvom glasovanju bilo je 1923. godine.

Izbor predsjednika Zastupničkog doma možda je samo pitanje sati... ili tjedana: godine 1856. zastupnici su se dogovorili tek nakon dva mjeseca i 133 kruga.

Republikanski tvrdolinijaši u Zastupničkom domu američkog Kongresa u utorak su tri puta spriječili izbor svog stranačkog kolege Kevina McCarthyja za predsjednika tog tijela.

Prvog dana izbora za čelnika donjeg doma Kongresa koji je djelovao kao obračun između dvadesetak tvrdolinijaša s ostala 202 člana republikanskog kluba, McCarthy u tri glasanja nije uspio dobiti 218 glasova potrebnih da postane predsjednik Zastupničkog doma.

Bio je to uznemirujući početak za novu republikansku većinu koji je ukazao na izazove s kojima bi se ta stranka mogla suočiti u sljedeće dvije godine, prije predsjedničkih izbora 2024. godine.

Njihova tanka većina od 222 spram 212 zastupnika omogućuje veći utjecaj maloj skupini tvrdolinijaša koji žele promjene pravila koje bi im dale...
