U poplavi novih sojeva koronavirusa, zadnji je tjedan posebno pod povećalom indijski soj, budući je Indija postala novo glavno žarište COVID-a. Iz zemlje stižu dramatične priče i ljudi umiru prije nego što im se uspije pružiti liječnička pomoć.

Tamošnji liječnici ukazuju kako se već u veljači slutilo da im slijedi novi val, ali da se upozorenja nisu shvaćala ozbiljno. Problem naglog širenja zaraze moguće leži i u novom soju virusa nazvanom B.1.617. Tamo je naime, 25. ožujka otkrivena nova dvostruko mutirajuća varijanta koronavirusa u nekoliko saveznih država.

Došlo je do dvostruke mutacije proteina šiljka koja virus čini zaraznijim i omogućava mu da, poput brazilskog i južnoafričkog soja lakše izbjegne imunološki odgovor. Indijska varijanta ima dvije važne mutacije u S-proteinu (E484Q i L452R) koje mogu imati određeno biološko značenje, no točno kakvo, to tek treba utvrditi. 

Studija koju je objavio Lancet ovaj mjesec procjenjuje da bi se broj žrtava Covida u Indiji mogao udvostručiti do lipnja.

Mutacija je prvo primijećena u indijskoj državi Maharashtrom. U početku je udio nove varijante u sekvenciranim uzorcima, u tom dijelu Indije bio između 15 i 20 posto, a onda je narastao na čak 60 posto. Jedna od mutacija u ovom soju karakteristična je za brazilski soj, a druga za kalifornijski. 

I u Izraelu je ovaj tjedan otkriveno osam slučajeva indijske varijante među ljudima koji su doputovali izvana, a izraelski zdravstveni dužnosnici smatraju da će mRNA cjepiva protiv COVID-a (Pfizer i Moderna) biti djelotvorna i protiv ove varijante, premda sa nešto smanjenom učinkovitošću. Britanci su pak naknadno utvrdili da je indijski soj na Otoku bio prisutan još u veljači.

Public Health England (PHE), agencija britanskog ministarstva zdravstva, izvijestila je prošlog tjedna o detektirana 73 slučaja varijante B.1.617 u Engleskoj i četiri u Škotskoj, no ministar Matt Hancock u ponedjeljak je potvrdio ukupno 103 slučaja. Većina je povezana s putnicima iz Indije, no zabilježeni su i slučajevi transmisije virusa unutar kućanstava.

Kako navodi Guardian prošlog tjedna PHE ga je označio kao 'varijantu pod istragom', a takva oznaka daje se u slučajevima potencijalno zabrinjavajućih varijanti.

Znanstvenici nastoje utvrditi je li mutant opasniji od ostalih cirkulirajućih sojeva, primjerice širi li se brže, uzrokuje li teže simptome i izmiče li imunitetu stvorenom prethodnim zarazama ili cijepljenjem. Ako se potvrdi da je problematičniji od postojećih, Britanija će ga označiti kao 'zabrinjavajuću varijantu'

Do takve promjene moglo bi, navodi Guardian, doći vrlo brzo. Od dvije ključne mutacije indijskog soja, moguće je da L452R pomaže virusu da umakne antitijelima nastalima cijepljenjem dok E484Q ima određene sličnosti s mutacijom E484K, a koja južnoafrički soj čini najmanje djelomično otpornim na cjepivo. Ipak, nije izgledno to da mutacije u indijskoj varijanti čine cjepiva potpuno neučinkovitima jer ona potiču široku imunološku obranu organizma.

Istodobno sa istraživanjem novih sojeva, u Velikoj Britaniji su počeli razvijati cjepiva druge generacije usmjerena na proširenje zaštite od bolesti. Također, Austrija i Danska zajedno sa Izraelom rade na cjepivu druge generacije zbog mutacija koronavirusa. Skupini od tri države, koja se nazvala First Mover, pridružila se i Češka, Grčka, Norveška te Australija i Novi Zeland.

Osim cjepiva koje bi moglo pružiti imunološku obranu protiv različitih sojeva virusa, znanstvenici istražuju i učinkovitost cjepiva koje bi moglo blokirati prijenos bolesti. Radi se na projektu koji bi bio sličan cijepljenju protiv gripe u smislu da bi se cjepivo primilo jednom godišnje i sadržavalo kombinaciju nekoliko cjepiva od koje svako štiti od drugačijeg soja virusa.

Trenutačno dostupna cjepiva mogu spriječiti zaražene osobe da se ozbiljno razbole, prevenirati hospitalizaciju i smrtni ishod. No, još uvijek nije poznato koliko su učinkovita u blokiranju prijenosa virusa s jedne osobe na drugu.

Jedno od mogućih rješenja za taj problem je cjepivo koje bi ciljalo ne samo na protein šiljka, već i na N protein, na kojem se upravo radi.

U poplavi novih sojeva koronavirusa, zadnji je tjedan posebno pod povećalom indijski soj, budući je Indija postala novo glavno žarište COVID-a. Iz zemlje stižu dramatične priče i ljudi umiru prije nego što im se uspije pružiti liječnička pomoć.

Tamošnji liječnici ukazuju kako se već u veljači slutilo da im slijedi novi val, ali da se upozorenja nisu shvaćala ozbiljno. Problem naglog širenja zaraze moguće leži i u novom soju virusa nazvanom B.1.617. Tamo je naime, 25. ožujka otkrivena nova dvostruko mutirajuća varijanta koronavirusa u nekoliko saveznih država.

Došlo je do dvostruke mutacije proteina šiljka koja virus čini zaraznijim i omogućava mu da, poput brazilskog i južnoafričkog soja lakše izbjegne imunološki odgovor. Indijska varijanta ima dvije važne mutacije u S-proteinu (E484Q i L452R) koje mogu imati određeno biološko značenje, no točno kakvo, to tek treba utvrditi. 

Studija koju je objavio Lancet ovaj mjesec procjenjuje da bi se broj žrtava Covida u Indiji mogao udvostručiti do lipnja.

Mutacija je prvo primijećena u indijskoj državi Maharashtrom. U početku je udio nove varijante u sekvenciranim uzorcima, u tom dijelu Indije bio između 15 i 20 posto, a onda je narastao na čak 60 posto. Jedna od mutacija u ovom soju karakteristična je za brazilski soj, a druga za kalifornijski. 

I u Izraelu je ovaj tjedan otkriveno osam slučajeva indijske varijante među ljudima koji su doputovali izvana, a izraelski zdravstveni dužnosnici smatraju da će mRNA cjepiva protiv COVID-a (Pfizer i Moderna) biti djelotvorna i protiv ove varijante, premda sa nešto smanjenom učinkovitošću. Britanci su pak naknadno utvrdili da je indijski soj na Otoku bio prisutan još u veljači.

Public Health England (PHE), agencija britanskog ministarstva zdravstva, izvijestila je prošlog tjedna o detektirana 73 slučaja varijante B.1.617 u Engleskoj i četiri u Škotskoj, no ministar Matt Hancock u ponedjeljak je potvrdio ukupno 103 slučaja. Većina je povezana s putnicima iz Indije, no zabilježeni su i slučajevi transmisije virusa unutar kućanstava.

Kako navodi Guardian prošlog tjedna PHE ga je označio kao 'varijantu pod istragom', a takva oznaka daje se u slučajevima potencijalno zabrinjavajućih varijanti.

Znanstvenici nastoje utvrditi je li mutant opasniji od ostalih cirkulirajućih sojeva, primjerice širi li se brže, uzrokuje li teže simptome i izmiče li imunitetu stvorenom prethodnim zarazama ili cijepljenjem. Ako se potvrdi da je problematičniji od postojećih, Britanija će ga označiti kao 'zabrinjavajuću varijantu'

Do takve promjene moglo bi, navodi Guardian, doći vrlo brzo. Od dvije ključne mutacije indijskog soja, moguće je da L452R pomaže virusu da umakne antitijelima nastalima cijepljenjem dok E484Q ima određene sličnosti s mutacijom E484K, a koja južnoafrički soj čini najmanje djelomično otpornim na cjepivo. Ipak, nije izgledno to da mutacije u indijskoj varijanti čine cjepiva potpuno neučinkovitima jer ona potiču široku imunološku obranu organizma.

Istodobno sa istraživanjem novih sojeva, u Velikoj Britaniji su počeli razvijati cjepiva druge generacije usmjerena na proširenje zaštite od bolesti. Također, Austrija i Danska zajedno sa Izraelom rade na cjepivu druge generacije zbog mutacija koronavirusa. Skupini od tri države, koja se nazvala First Mover, pridružila se i Češka, Grčka, Norveška te Australija i Novi Zeland.

Osim cjepiva koje bi moglo pružiti imunološku obranu protiv različitih sojeva virusa, znanstvenici istražuju i učinkovitost cjepiva koje bi moglo blokirati prijenos bolesti. Radi se na projektu koji bi bio sličan cijepljenju protiv gripe u smislu da bi se cjepivo primilo jednom godišnje i sadržavalo kombinaciju nekoliko cjepiva od koje svako štiti od drugačijeg soja virusa.

Trenutačno dostupna cjepiva mogu spriječiti zaražene osobe da se ozbiljno razbole, prevenirati hospitalizaciju i smrtni ishod. No, još uvijek nije poznato koliko su učinkovita u blokiranju prijenosa virusa s jedne osobe na drugu.

Jedno od mogućih rješenja za taj problem je cjepivo koje bi ciljalo ne samo na protein šiljka, već i na N protein, na kojem se upravo radi.
