Za vrijeme hladnog rata dvije suprotstavljene supersile - SSSR i SAD - bile su u svakom trenutku spremne za izbijanje oružanog sukoba između njih. Svi su bili sigurni da će Treći svetski rat biti nuklearni konflikt i da će dovesti do uzajamnog uništenja.

Međutim, 1979. godine Sovjeti su napravili plan kako uništiti svoga najljućeg neprijatelja i pritom izbjeći nuklearnu apokalipsu. Plan pod nazivom "Sedam dana do rijeke Rajne" predviđao je da snage NATO-a u Europi budu uništene za samo tjedan dana, piše Russia Beyond.

Moskva je očekivala da će NATO napasti prvi. Prema planu, alijansa bi nuklearnim bombama gađala 25 objekata u Poljskoj na rijeci Visli i ovu zemlju tako pretvorila u razoren i kontaminiran prostor, efikasno odsijecajući sovjetske trupe u Istočnoj Njemačkoj, Mađarskoj i Čehoslovačkoj od njihovih glavnih baza u SSSR-u.

To bi, međutim, odmah pokrenulo Varšavski pakt na akciju. Sovjetske nuklearne snage napale bi Njemačku, Belgiju, Nizozemsku, Dansku i sjevernu Italiju. Tako bi sjedište NATO-a u Bruxellesu bilo uništeno.

Ne napadajući SAD, Francusku i Veliku Britaniju, Sovjeti su željeli stvoriti podjelu između zapadnih saveznika. Znali su da ne odlučuje glavno zapovjedništvo NATO-a, nego rukovodstvo SAD-a, Francuske i Britanije o tome kako i kada se koristi nuklearno oružje. Ovim bi ih manevrom SSSR stavio pred težak izbor: da upotrijebe nuklearno oružje protiv Sovjeta i sa sigurnošću prime nuklearni napad, da se bore bez korištenja nuklearnih kapaciteta ili čak da ostanu izvan konflikta. Sa složenim odnosima Francuske prema NATO-u, koji je napustila 1966. godine (nastavljajući ipak surađivati s alijansom), ova mogućnost uopće nije bila nevjerojatna.

'PREVIŠE OPTIMISTIČAN I GOTOVO NEOSTVARIV PLAN'

Poslije nuklearnih napada sovjetska i čehoslovačka vojska trebala se probiti kroz neprijateljske redove do rijeke Rajne. S obzirom na to da su po broju tenkova nekoliko puta nadmašivali alijansu, bili su sigurni u uspjeh. Istovremeno, neutralna, ali strateški važnu Austriju trebala je napasti i okupirati Mađarska.

Dok bi sovjetske kopnene snage zauzele važne mostove preko rijeka, avijacija Varšavskog pakta trebala je uništiti europske aerodrome i vojne baze NATO-a.

Važan je zadatak povjeren i sovjetskoj mornarici. Ona je trebala prekinuti sve komunikacije između SAD-a i Europe u Atlantskom oceanu i spriječiti Amerikance da svojim saveznicima pošalju pojačanje. Sovjetske su podmornice trebale naći i uništiti američki adut: ofenzivne grupe američkih nosača aviona. U međuvremenu su sovjetske nuklearne podmornice u Arktičkom oceanu trebale biti spremne reagirati na mogući nuklearni napad SAD-a.

Moskva je vjerovala da bi, ako bi se sve odvijalo prema planu, glavne NATO-ove snage u Europi bile uništene za sedam dana. Ako bi bilo potrebno, sovjetska bi vojska nastavila napredovati prema Francuskoj. Šokirano i zbunjeno rukovodstvo zapadnih zemalja bilo bi prisiljeno sjesti za pregovarački stol i opći bi nuklearni rat bio izbjegnut.

Sovjetsko je zapovjedništvo potpuno ignoriralo doktrinu NATO-a o kolektivnoj obrani koja je iznesena u Sjevernoatlantskom sporazumu iz 1949. U njoj se navodi da je napad na jednu članicu alijanse napad na sve njih. NATO je bio spreman započeti opći nuklearni rat ako bi samo jedna od njegovih članica bila napadnuta nuklearnim oružjem bez obzira na to posjeduje li ona sama nuklearno oružje ili ne.

Čak su i najbliži sovjetski saveznici u Varšavskom paktu smatrali da je plan "Sedam dana do rijeke Rajne" previše optimističan i gotovo neostvariv. Ipak, Sovjeti su tijekom deset godina, sve do kasnih 80-ih, održavali tajne vježbe zasnovane na tom planu, piše Russia Beyond.

Za vrijeme hladnog rata dvije suprotstavljene supersile - SSSR i SAD - bile su u svakom trenutku spremne za izbijanje oružanog sukoba između njih. Svi su bili sigurni da će Treći svetski rat biti nuklearni konflikt i da će dovesti do uzajamnog uništenja.

Međutim, 1979. godine Sovjeti su napravili plan kako uništiti svoga najljućeg neprijatelja i pritom izbjeći nuklearnu apokalipsu. Plan pod nazivom "Sedam dana do rijeke Rajne" predviđao je da snage NATO-a u Europi budu uništene za samo tjedan dana, piše Russia Beyond.

Moskva je očekivala da će NATO napasti prvi. Prema planu, alijansa bi nuklearnim bombama gađala 25 objekata u Poljskoj na rijeci Visli i ovu zemlju tako pretvorila u razoren i kontaminiran prostor, efikasno odsijecajući sovjetske trupe u Istočnoj Njemačkoj, Mađarskoj i Čehoslovačkoj od njihovih glavnih baza u SSSR-u.

To bi, međutim, odmah pokrenulo Varšavski pakt na akciju. Sovjetske nuklearne snage napale bi Njemačku, Belgiju, Nizozemsku, Dansku i sjevernu Italiju. Tako bi sjedište NATO-a u Bruxellesu bilo uništeno.

Ne napadajući SAD, Francusku i Veliku Britaniju, Sovjeti su željeli stvoriti podjelu između zapadnih saveznika. Znali su da ne odlučuje glavno zapovjedništvo NATO-a, nego rukovodstvo SAD-a, Francuske i Britanije o tome kako i kada se koristi nuklearno oružje. Ovim bi ih manevrom SSSR stavio pred težak izbor: da upotrijebe nuklearno oružje protiv Sovjeta i sa sigurnošću prime nuklearni napad, da se bore bez korištenja nuklearnih kapaciteta ili čak da ostanu izvan konflikta. Sa složenim odnosima Francuske prema NATO-u, koji je napustila 1966. godine (nastavljajući ipak surađivati s alijansom), ova mogućnost uopće nije bila nevjerojatna.

'PREVIŠE OPTIMISTIČAN I GOTOVO NEOSTVARIV PLAN'

Poslije nuklearnih napada sovjetska i čehoslovačka vojska trebala se probiti kroz neprijateljske redove do rijeke Rajne. S obzirom na to da su po broju tenkova nekoliko puta nadmašivali alijansu, bili su sigurni u uspjeh. Istovremeno, neutralna, ali strateški važnu Austriju trebala je napasti i okupirati Mađarska.

Dok bi sovjetske kopnene snage zauzele važne mostove preko rijeka, avijacija Varšavskog pakta trebala je uništiti europske aerodrome i vojne baze NATO-a.

Važan je zadatak povjeren i sovjetskoj mornarici. Ona je trebala prekinuti sve komunikacije između SAD-a i Europe u Atlantskom oceanu i spriječiti Amerikance da svojim saveznicima pošalju pojačanje. Sovjetske su podmornice trebale naći i uništiti američki adut: ofenzivne grupe američkih nosača aviona. U međuvremenu su sovjetske nuklearne podmornice u Arktičkom oceanu trebale biti spremne reagirati na mogući nuklearni napad SAD-a.

Moskva je vjerovala da bi, ako bi se sve odvijalo prema planu, glavne NATO-ove snage u Europi bile uništene za sedam dana. Ako bi bilo potrebno, sovjetska bi vojska nastavila napredovati prema Francuskoj. Šokirano i zbunjeno rukovodstvo zapadnih zemalja bilo bi prisiljeno sjesti za pregovarački stol i opći bi nuklearni rat bio izbjegnut.

Sovjetsko je zapovjedništvo potpuno ignoriralo doktrinu NATO-a o kolektivnoj obrani koja je iznesena u Sjevernoatlantskom sporazumu iz 1949. U njoj se navodi da je napad na jednu članicu alijanse napad na sve njih. NATO je bio spreman započeti opći nuklearni rat ako bi samo jedna od njegovih članica bila napadnuta nuklearnim oružjem bez obzira na to posjeduje li ona sama nuklearno oružje ili ne.

Čak su i najbliži sovjetski saveznici u Varšavskom paktu smatrali da je plan "Sedam dana do rijeke Rajne" previše optimističan i gotovo neostvariv. Ipak, Sovjeti su tijekom deset godina, sve do kasnih 80-ih, održavali tajne vježbe zasnovane na tom planu, piše Russia Beyond.
