James Martin, isusovački svećenik i autor knjige “Učiti moliti: Vodič za sve”, u komentaru za "New York Times" otvorio je i razriješio jednu vrlo aktualnu dilemu: je li razumljivo i opravdano likovati nad smrću od Covida onih koji su se odbijali cijepiti?

Na početku svog teksta napominje da su među onima koji su se odbili cijepiti mnogi su umrli pa nastavlja:

Mnogo će ih još umrijeti. I poznati i ne tako poznati, možda neki od vaših prijatelja ili članova obitelji, pridružili su se dugom nizu onih koji su umrli od Covida nakon što su se opirali onome što je gotovo svaki ugledni znanstvenik i liječnik rekao: cijepljenje, nošenje maski i održavanje razmaka najbolja su zaštita od Covida, a također pomažu u zaštiti drugih, posebice onih koji su bolesni, stariji ili imunokompromitirani.

'Čin ljubavi'

Papa Franjo nazvao je cijepljenje "činom ljubavi". Da kažem otvorenije od Svetog Oca – niste u pitanju samo vi. Stoga ne čudi da će mnogi, kada od Covida umre neka poznata osoba koja je odbila izvršiti ovaj čin ljubavi i k tome javno govorila protiv cijepljenja, odmah reći: “Rekao sam ti!” Neki idu još dalje, rugajući se onima koji su umrli ili čak "trolajući" svoje preživjele.

Ova zbrka intenzivnih osjećaja može biti zbunjujuća: vidimo nekoga tko se opire cjepivima ili nošenju maske (što nas frustrira); time ugrožava druge (što nas ljuti); možda čak i nas (što nas plaši), a zatim možda taj netko i umre. E, to bi nas trebalo rastužiti, ali neki od nas s užasom otkriju da ih nije. Osjećaj da je nečija smrt "opravdana" čini se nemoralnim, ali nastupa refleksno i to je čak nekako ljudski.

Postoji nekoliko mogućih teorija o tome kako su ljudi razvili sklonost za "schadenfreude", što je njemački izraz za radovanje tuđoj nesreći. Možda su naši preci koji su živjeli u špiljama osjetili nešto slično kada su vidjeli da se neprijatelj previše približio sabljastom tigru, unatoč ponovljenim upozorenjima, i završio kao njegov obrok.

Nije kršćanski

Colin Wayne Leach, profesor psihologije na Sveučilištu Barnard, koji je proučavao likovanje, nedavno je za "New York Times" rekao da je ono kod mnogih kao odgovor na smrt aktivista protiv cjepiva rezultat polarizacije zemlje: “Kad vidite da vaši protivnici pate zbog onoga u što vjeruju – to je nekako najslađa pravda i stoga dijelom toliko zadovoljavajuća za drugu stranu.” Mnogi ljudi doživljavaju zadovoljstvo govoreći (ili razmišljajući): “Vidiš? Bio sam u pravu!" Nakon mjeseci pokušaja uvjeravanja anti-vaksera i antimaskera da su mjere tu za njihovo dobro i dobrobit drugih, ta frustracija mogla bi nadvladati ljude.

Likovanje nad protivničkom nesrećom prisutno je u cijelom ideološkom spektru. Nedavno je na Fox Newsu Laura Ingraham, komentatorica koja često izražava svoju vjeru u "kršćanske vrijednosti", pozdravila vijest da je general Mark Milley, predsjednik Združenog glavnog stožera, bio pozitivan na koronavirus unatoč tome što je bio cijepljen i pojačan. No, problem je u tome što je čak i umjereno likovanje suprotno “kršćanskim vrijednostima”. Isus nas je učio da se molimo za svoje neprijatelje, a ne da slavimo njihove nesreće. Htio je da brinemo o bolesnima, a ne da im se smijemo. Kad je Isus bio razapet zajedno s dva razbojnika, on jednom od njih, prema Lukinom evanđelju, nije rekao “To si i tražio”, nego “Danas ćeš biti sa mnom u raju”. "Schadenfreude" nije kršćanska vrijednost.

Slijepa ulica

U ovom trenutku mogao bih proći kroz čitav popis filozofa, teologa i drugih mudrih glasova iz raznih religija diljem svijeta kako bih dokazao svoju tvrdnju. Likovanje zbog nečije patnje ili smrti daleko je od moralnog čina koliko god možete zamisliti. To je okrutno i podlo. Ako mu se redovito prepuštate, "schadenfreude" nam na kraju iskvari dušu. Oduzima nam empatiju prema onima s kojima se ne slažemo. Umanjuje naše suosjećanje. Da se poslužim jezikom iz Starog i Novog zavjeta, to “otvrdne” naša srca. Bez obzira na to koliko se ne slažem s antivakserima, znam da nas to uživanje u njihovoj nesreći, taj "schadenfreude", vodi u slijepu ulicu.

James Martin, isusovački svećenik i autor knjige “Učiti moliti: Vodič za sve”, u komentaru za "New York Times" otvorio je i razriješio jednu vrlo aktualnu dilemu: je li razumljivo i opravdano likovati nad smrću od Covida onih koji su se odbijali cijepiti?

Na početku svog teksta napominje da su među onima koji su se odbili cijepiti mnogi su umrli pa nastavlja:

Mnogo će ih još umrijeti. I poznati i ne tako poznati, možda neki od vaših prijatelja ili članova obitelji, pridružili su se dugom nizu onih koji su umrli od Covida nakon što su se opirali onome što je gotovo svaki ugledni znanstvenik i liječnik rekao: cijepljenje, nošenje maski i održavanje razmaka najbolja su zaštita od Covida, a također pomažu u zaštiti drugih, posebice onih koji su bolesni, stariji ili imunokompromitirani.

'Čin ljubavi'

Papa Franjo nazvao je cijepljenje "činom ljubavi". Da kažem otvorenije od Svetog Oca – niste u pitanju samo vi. Stoga ne čudi da će mnogi, kada od Covida umre neka poznata osoba koja je odbila izvršiti ovaj čin ljubavi i k tome javno govorila protiv cijepljenja, odmah reći: “Rekao sam ti!” Neki idu još dalje, rugajući se onima koji su umrli ili čak "trolajući" svoje preživjele.

Ova zbrka intenzivnih osjećaja može biti zbunjujuća: vidimo nekoga tko se opire cjepivima ili nošenju maske (što nas frustrira); time ugrožava druge (što nas ljuti); možda čak i nas (što nas plaši), a zatim možda taj netko i umre. E, to bi nas trebalo rastužiti, ali neki od nas s užasom otkriju da ih nije. Osjećaj da je nečija smrt "opravdana" čini se nemoralnim, ali nastupa refleksno i to je čak nekako ljudski.

Postoji nekoliko mogućih teorija o tome kako su ljudi razvili sklonost za "schadenfreude", što je njemački izraz za radovanje tuđoj nesreći. Možda su naši preci koji su živjeli u špiljama osjetili nešto slično kada su vidjeli da se neprijatelj previše približio sabljastom tigru, unatoč ponovljenim upozorenjima, i završio kao njegov obrok.

Nije kršćanski

Colin Wayne Leach, profesor psihologije na Sveučilištu Barnard, koji je proučavao likovanje, nedavno je za "New York Times" rekao da je ono kod mnogih kao odgovor na smrt aktivista protiv cjepiva rezultat polarizacije zemlje: “Kad vidite da vaši protivnici pate zbog onoga u što vjeruju – to je nekako najslađa pravda i stoga dijelom toliko zadovoljavajuća za drugu stranu.” Mnogi ljudi doživljavaju zadovoljstvo govoreći (ili razmišljajući): “Vidiš? Bio sam u pravu!" Nakon mjeseci pokušaja uvjeravanja anti-vaksera i antimaskera da su mjere tu za njihovo dobro i dobrobit drugih, ta frustracija mogla bi nadvladati ljude.

Likovanje nad protivničkom nesrećom prisutno je u cijelom ideološkom spektru. Nedavno je na Fox Newsu Laura Ingraham, komentatorica koja često izražava svoju vjeru u "kršćanske vrijednosti", pozdravila vijest da je general Mark Milley, predsjednik Združenog glavnog stožera, bio pozitivan na koronavirus unatoč tome što je bio cijepljen i pojačan. No, problem je u tome što je čak i umjereno likovanje suprotno “kršćanskim vrijednostima”. Isus nas je učio da se molimo za svoje neprijatelje, a ne da slavimo njihove nesreće. Htio je da brinemo o bolesnima, a ne da im se smijemo. Kad je Isus bio razapet zajedno s dva razbojnika, on jednom od njih, prema Lukinom evanđelju, nije rekao “To si i tražio”, nego “Danas ćeš biti sa mnom u raju”. "Schadenfreude" nije kršćanska vrijednost.

Slijepa ulica

U ovom trenutku mogao bih proći kroz čitav popis filozofa, teologa i drugih mudrih glasova iz raznih religija diljem svijeta kako bih dokazao svoju tvrdnju. Likovanje zbog nečije patnje ili smrti daleko je od moralnog čina koliko god možete zamisliti. To je okrutno i podlo. Ako mu se redovito prepuštate, "schadenfreude" nam na kraju iskvari dušu. Oduzima nam empatiju prema onima s kojima se ne slažemo. Umanjuje naše suosjećanje. Da se poslužim jezikom iz Starog i Novog zavjeta, to “otvrdne” naša srca. Bez obzira na to koliko se ne slažem s antivakserima, znam da nas to uživanje u njihovoj nesreći, taj "schadenfreude", vodi u slijepu ulicu.
