Produljenjem očekivanog životnog vijeka i naglim porastom populacije starijih osoba, porastao je i broj starijih oboljelih od raka što predstavlja ozbiljan problem za javno zdravstvo. Svijet se mora pripremiti za prihvaćanje milijuna novih pacijenata i adaptaciju zdravstvenih sustava koji će se moći nositi sa situacijom, piše The Guardian, prenosi Jutarnji list.
Na godišnjem sastanku Američkog društva za kliničku onkologiju (ASCO) u Chicagu direktor centra za liječenje raka i specijalist za gerijatrijsku onkologiju, Andrew Chapman, rekao je da smatra da globalno nismo spremni nositi se s povećanim potrebama za liječenjem.
- Poznato je da je rak bolest povezana sa starenjem, a postoji i niz bioloških mehanizama koji objašnjavaju zašto je to tako. Međutim, ono što se često zanemaruje je da su ciljevi, želje i potrebe starijih osoba drugačije nego kod mlađih pacijenata. Ponekad se na njihovu bolest gleda nihilistički - ako ste stariji, nećemo niti pokušavati, što je grozno, rekao je Chapman.

Objašnjava da stariji pacijenti često daju prednost tretmanima koji neće narušiti njihovu samostalnost i neovisnost, umjesto da se posvete učinkovitijim tretmanima. Stalo im je do toga da mogu voziti automoil, provoditi vrijeme s obitelji i baviti se hobijima poput vrtlarenja ili golfa.
- Ako osobu liječite tretmanom koji će joj oduzeti samostalnost, možda neće pristati na njega. Zato je ova situacija drugačija nego kod liječenja, primjerice, 45-godišnjaka koji želi živjeti još 40 godina, objašnjava onkolog.
Hitno poduzimanje mjera
Julie Gralow, izvršna potpredsjednica ASCO-a, smatra da bi zdravstveni sustavi trebali odmah poduzeti mjere da ih ne iznenadi dramatičan porast broja oboljelih od raka i preopterećenost sustava.
- Očekuje se da će do 2040. broj oboljelih porasti za 27,5 milijuna, kao i broj smrtnih slučaja koji će biti veći za 16,3 milijuna zbog rasta i starenja stanovništva, rekla je Gralow.
Dodatne prepreke na tom putu bit će povezane s radnom snagom, odnosno s manjkom osoblja i manjkom radnika koji su educirani za liječenje gerijatrijskih slučajeva.

- Većina podataka kliničkih ispitivanja dolazi od mlađih pacijenata, u ispitivanja moramo uključiti i starije pacijente da bismo mogli razumjeti štetnost i učinkovitost terapija na ovoj populaciji, dodala je Gralow.
Nacionalni institut za rak predviđa da će do 2040. godine gotovo tri četvrtine ljudi (73 posto) koji imaju rak biti stariji od 65 godina. U Britaniji će broj ljudi s dijagnozom raka porasti za trećinu, a većina zaraženih imat će 70 ili više godina.
- Povećat će se broj starijih oboljelih od raka kojima će biti potrebna multidisciplinarna skrb jer boluju i od drugih bolesti, primjerice kardiovaskularnih, srčanih ili respiratornih problema. Vjerojatno je da će pacijenti također uzimati lijekove za druge bolesti čime se komplicira liječenje raka, rekao je Charles Swanton zaposlen u Cancer Research centru u Ujedinjenom Kraljevstvu, prenosi Jutarnji list.

Produljenjem očekivanog životnog vijeka i naglim porastom populacije starijih osoba, porastao je i broj starijih oboljelih od raka što predstavlja ozbiljan problem za javno zdravstvo. Svijet se mora pripremiti za prihvaćanje milijuna novih pacijenata i adaptaciju zdravstvenih sustava koji će se moći nositi sa situacijom, piše The Guardian, prenosi Jutarnji list.
Na godišnjem sastanku Američkog društva za kliničku onkologiju (ASCO) u Chicagu direktor centra za liječenje raka i specijalist za gerijatrijsku onkologiju, Andrew Chapman, rekao je da smatra da globalno nismo spremni nositi se s povećanim potrebama za liječenjem.
- Poznato je da je rak bolest povezana sa starenjem, a postoji i niz bioloških mehanizama koji objašnjavaju zašto je to tako. Međutim, ono što se često zanemaruje je da su ciljevi, želje i potrebe starijih osoba drugačije nego kod mlađih pacijenata. Ponekad se na njihovu bolest gleda nihilistički - ako ste stariji, nećemo niti pokušavati, što je grozno, rekao je Chapman.

Objašnjava da stariji pacijenti često daju prednost tretmanima koji neće narušiti njihovu samostalnost i neovisnost, umjesto da se posvete učinkovitijim tretmanima. Stalo im je do toga da mogu voziti automoil, provoditi vrijeme s obitelji i baviti se hobijima poput vrtlarenja ili golfa.
- Ako osobu liječite tretmanom koji će joj oduzeti samostalnost, možda neće pristati na njega. Zato je ova situacija drugačija nego kod liječenja, primjerice, 45-godišnjaka koji želi živjeti još 40 godina, objašnjava onkolog.
Hitno poduzimanje mjera
Julie Gralow, izvršna potpredsjednica ASCO-a, smatra da bi zdravstveni sustavi trebali odmah poduzeti mjere da ih ne iznenadi dramatičan porast broja oboljelih od raka i preopterećenost sustava.
- Očekuje se da će do 2040. broj oboljelih porasti za 27,5 milijuna, kao i broj smrtnih slučaja koji će biti veći za 16,3 milijuna zbog rasta i starenja stanovništva, rekla je Gralow.
Dodatne prepreke na tom putu bit će povezane s radnom snagom, odnosno s manjkom osoblja i manjkom radnika koji su educirani za liječenje gerijatrijskih slučajeva.

- Većina podataka kliničkih ispitivanja dolazi od mlađih pacijenata, u ispitivanja moramo uključiti i starije pacijente da bismo mogli razumjeti štetnost i učinkovitost terapija na ovoj populaciji, dodala je Gralow.
Nacionalni institut za rak predviđa da će do 2040. godine gotovo tri četvrtine ljudi (73 posto) koji imaju rak biti stariji od 65 godina. U Britaniji će broj ljudi s dijagnozom raka porasti za trećinu, a većina zaraženih imat će 70 ili više godina.
- Povećat će se broj starijih oboljelih od raka kojima će biti potrebna multidisciplinarna skrb jer boluju i od drugih bolesti, primjerice kardiovaskularnih, srčanih ili respiratornih problema. Vjerojatno je da će pacijenti također uzimati lijekove za druge bolesti čime se komplicira liječenje raka, rekao je Charles Swanton zaposlen u Cancer Research centru u Ujedinjenom Kraljevstvu, prenosi Jutarnji list.
