Roman koji vam ovoga tjedna želim predstaviti u engleskom izvorniku nosi naslov "The Drowned Detective" ("Utopljeni detektiv"). Njegov hrvatski prevoditelj Damir Biličić bio je toliko obziran i mudar da je prešutio zanimanje utopljenika, pa je time učinio uslugu svim potencijalnim čitateljima knjige. Naime, libar slavnog irskog filmaša i prozaika Neila Jordana nipošto se ne bi smio staviti u škafetin krimića, jer bi mu se tako dvostruko naškodilo. Onaj dio čitalačke publike nesklon žanrovskoj literaturi roman bi naprosto ignorirao; ljubitelje, pak, detektivske proze knjiga bi temeljito razočarala, a neke možda čak i surovo ugnjavila.

Pa o čemu se onda ovdje radi? "Utopljenik" uistinu započinje kao klasično žanrovsko djelo. Glavni junak je privatni istražitelj koji zajedno s dvojicom svojih kolega, a po nalogu klijentice, prevarene supruge uspaljenog ministra, prati dotičnoga ne bi li prikupio dokaze i tako dokumentirao njegovo bračno skretanje. Prvo iskakanje s tračnica očekivanja dogodit će se već na drugoj stranici kad shvatimo da ministar svoju decentnu suprugu vara s mjesnom – pazite sad! –​ vulkanizerkom.

Takav škerac mogao bi se očekivati od pisca kao što je, recimo, Dušan Kovačević, ali ne i od pravovjernog žanrovca. No, već i prije kraja prvoga poglavlja shvatit ćemo kako se ovdje ne radi o djelu iz detekcijske niše. Afera između ministra i vulkanizerke neće se dalje razvijati ili možda hoće, ali čitatelj o njoj ništa neće znati, jer će i pisca i njegova glavnog junaka zaokupiti jedan posve drugi slučaj. A put do njegova rješenja vodit će preko stana ostarjele dame koja se ponosno legitimira kao vidovnjakinja, premda ni ona sama nema nimalo dvojbi oko toga da je ustvari obična šarlatanka.

SREDNJOEUROPSKI PROSTOR

No, gdje je ova Jordanova priča uopće situirana? Na to je pitanje nemoguće dati precizan odgovor. Vrijeme je sadašnje ili barem blisko ovome u kojemu živimo, a prostor je srednjoeuropski. Čujemo češke riječi, ali ne samo njih, mađarska imena, ali i neka druga, arhitektura je obilježena bogatim povijesnim slojevima, ali i tragovima socijalističkog sivila, tako tipičnog za zemlje istočnoga bloka. U toj nekoj neuhvatljivoj i neodredivoj državi koja bi mogla biti Češka, Mađarska, Slovačka i tko zna što sve još ne, situacija je napeta, iz dana u dan sve dramatičnija. Sukobi između prosvjednika koji nose fantomke vedrih, pastelnih boja i specijalne policije koju prepoznajemo po crnim fantomkama svakodnevni su i sve oštriji. Zemlja je nepomirljivo raskoljena i čini se da pred njom stoje samo dvije mogućnosti: građanski rat ili život pod još tvrđim autoritarnim režimom.

Što, međutim, stoji u pozadini toga sraza, možemo samo nagađati, jer diskretni Jordan govori malo o suštini sukoba i razlozima za toliku netrpeljivost suprotstavljenih strana. Tko baci letimičan pogled – a jedino takav pisac dopušta čitatelju – mogao bi zaključiti kako zemlja živi u ritmu permanentne queer parade na koju nasrću nemilosrdni policijski specijalci.

STUDIJA O LJUBOMORI

Glavnome junaku, Englezu koji vodi detektivsku agenciju, traga za kopijama poznatih modnih brendova i uhodi uspaljene muževe, nije lako. Uvjeren je da ga supruga vara i to s njegovim namještenikom, a odnedavno je započeo bizarnu vezu, koja i jest i nije erotska (općenito, u ovome romanu mnogo što i jest i nije), sa ženom koju je spasio od utapanja. Da sve bude još i gore, taj će neobični odnos s terena opipljive, dokazive stvarnosti s vremenom skrenuti u maglovite sfere neukrotive fantazije. A kad u taj svijet bude uvučena i junakova malena kći, on će se naći pred izborom: vratiti se svome starom, isluženom i dotrajalom, ali još uvijek privlačnom životu ili dublje zabrazditi u paralelnu stvarnost.

Premda se silno trudi (i uspijeva!) izmigoljiti čitateljskim očekivanjima, pa se tako očešao o mnoge motive i teme samo da bi još brže od njih digao ruke, Jordanu se nipošto ne bi smjelo prigovoriti da je nefokusiran pripovjedač. Jer, "Utopljenik" je vrlo detaljna, duboka i razvedena studija o ljubomori u svim "agregatnim stanjima" i posljedicama što ih za sobom vuče. Kao što đelozija korodira ljudske odnose, tako je i Jordan nagrizao bolje običaje žanrovske proze napisavši onirički triler i metafizički noir, djelo u kojemu se glavni junak bavi detekcijom razloga za održavanje braka i života kakvog je do tada živio. Kako i priliči ontološkoj napetici, njegova je potraga neizvjesna do samog kraja, a dotični kraj je, naravno, relativan, jer tko će znati što nam sutra nosi i koliko je krajeva još pred nama.

Roman koji vam ovoga tjedna želim predstaviti u engleskom izvorniku nosi naslov "The Drowned Detective" ("Utopljeni detektiv"). Njegov hrvatski prevoditelj Damir Biličić bio je toliko obziran i mudar da je prešutio zanimanje utopljenika, pa je time učinio uslugu svim potencijalnim čitateljima knjige. Naime, libar slavnog irskog filmaša i prozaika Neila Jordana nipošto se ne bi smio staviti u škafetin krimića, jer bi mu se tako dvostruko naškodilo. Onaj dio čitalačke publike nesklon žanrovskoj literaturi roman bi naprosto ignorirao; ljubitelje, pak, detektivske proze knjiga bi temeljito razočarala, a neke možda čak i surovo ugnjavila.

Pa o čemu se onda ovdje radi? "Utopljenik" uistinu započinje kao klasično žanrovsko djelo. Glavni junak je privatni istražitelj koji zajedno s dvojicom svojih kolega, a po nalogu klijentice, prevarene supruge uspaljenog ministra, prati dotičnoga ne bi li prikupio dokaze i tako dokumentirao njegovo bračno skretanje. Prvo iskakanje s tračnica očekivanja dogodit će se već na drugoj stranici kad shvatimo da ministar svoju decentnu suprugu vara s mjesnom – pazite sad! –​ vulkanizerkom.

Takav škerac mogao bi se očekivati od pisca kao što je, recimo, Dušan Kovačević, ali ne i od pravovjernog žanrovca. No, već i prije kraja prvoga poglavlja shvatit ćemo kako se ovdje ne radi o djelu iz detekcijske niše. Afera između ministra i vulkanizerke neće se dalje razvijati ili možda hoće, ali čitatelj o njoj ništa neće znati, jer će i pisca i njegova glavnog junaka zaokupiti jedan posve drugi slučaj. A put do njegova rješenja vodit će preko stana ostarjele dame koja se ponosno legitimira kao vidovnjakinja, premda ni ona sama nema nimalo dvojbi oko toga da je ustvari obična šarlatanka.

SREDNJOEUROPSKI PROSTOR

No, gdje je ova Jordanova priča uopće situirana? Na to je pitanje nemoguće dati precizan odgovor. Vrijeme je sadašnje ili barem blisko ovome u kojemu živimo, a prostor je srednjoeuropski. Čujemo češke riječi, ali ne samo njih, mađarska imena, ali i neka druga, arhitektura je obilježena bogatim povijesnim slojevima, ali i tragovima socijalističkog sivila, tako tipičnog za zemlje istočnoga bloka. U toj nekoj neuhvatljivoj i neodredivoj državi koja bi mogla biti Češka, Mađarska, Slovačka i tko zna što sve još ne, situacija je napeta, iz dana u dan sve dramatičnija. Sukobi između prosvjednika koji nose fantomke vedrih, pastelnih boja i specijalne policije koju prepoznajemo po crnim fantomkama svakodnevni su i sve oštriji. Zemlja je nepomirljivo raskoljena i čini se da pred njom stoje samo dvije mogućnosti: građanski rat ili život pod još tvrđim autoritarnim režimom.

Što, međutim, stoji u pozadini toga sraza, možemo samo nagađati, jer diskretni Jordan govori malo o suštini sukoba i razlozima za toliku netrpeljivost suprotstavljenih strana. Tko baci letimičan pogled – a jedino takav pisac dopušta čitatelju – mogao bi zaključiti kako zemlja živi u ritmu permanentne queer parade na koju nasrću nemilosrdni policijski specijalci.

STUDIJA O LJUBOMORI

Glavnome junaku, Englezu koji vodi detektivsku agenciju, traga za kopijama poznatih modnih brendova i uhodi uspaljene muževe, nije lako. Uvjeren je da ga supruga vara i to s njegovim namještenikom, a odnedavno je započeo bizarnu vezu, koja i jest i nije erotska (općenito, u ovome romanu mnogo što i jest i nije), sa ženom koju je spasio od utapanja. Da sve bude još i gore, taj će neobični odnos s terena opipljive, dokazive stvarnosti s vremenom skrenuti u maglovite sfere neukrotive fantazije. A kad u taj svijet bude uvučena i junakova malena kći, on će se naći pred izborom: vratiti se svome starom, isluženom i dotrajalom, ali još uvijek privlačnom životu ili dublje zabrazditi u paralelnu stvarnost.

Premda se silno trudi (i uspijeva!) izmigoljiti čitateljskim očekivanjima, pa se tako očešao o mnoge motive i teme samo da bi još brže od njih digao ruke, Jordanu se nipošto ne bi smjelo prigovoriti da je nefokusiran pripovjedač. Jer, "Utopljenik" je vrlo detaljna, duboka i razvedena studija o ljubomori u svim "agregatnim stanjima" i posljedicama što ih za sobom vuče. Kao što đelozija korodira ljudske odnose, tako je i Jordan nagrizao bolje običaje žanrovske proze napisavši onirički triler i metafizički noir, djelo u kojemu se glavni junak bavi detekcijom razloga za održavanje braka i života kakvog je do tada živio. Kako i priliči ontološkoj napetici, njegova je potraga neizvjesna do samog kraja, a dotični kraj je, naravno, relativan, jer tko će znati što nam sutra nosi i koliko je krajeva još pred nama.

Roman koji vam ovoga tjedna želim predstaviti u engleskom izvorniku nosi naslov "The Drowned Detective" ("Utopljeni detektiv"). Njegov hrvatski prevoditelj Damir Biličić bio je toliko obziran i mudar da je prešutio zanimanje utopljenika, pa je time učinio uslugu svim potencijalnim čitateljima knjige. Naime, libar slavnog irskog filmaša i prozaika Neila Jordana nipošto se ne bi smio staviti u škafetin krimića, jer bi mu se tako dvostruko naškodilo. Onaj dio čitalačke publike nesklon žanrovskoj literaturi roman bi naprosto ignorirao; ljubitelje, pak, detektivske proze knjiga bi temeljito razočarala, a neke možda čak i surovo ugnjavila.

Pa o čemu se onda ovdje radi? "Utopljenik" uistinu započinje kao klasično žanrovsko djelo. Glavni junak je privatni istražitelj koji zajedn...
