Western s Nicolasom Cageom? Zvuči neobično, no potentno. Zvjezdani oskarovac Cage snimio je u karijeri filmove iz takoreći svih žanrova, od komedija do drama, od akcija, do trilera i horora, ali ne i vestern s kojim je koketirao u “Arizona Junioru”, “Zabavnom parku noćnih mora” i “Zatvorenicima zemlje duhova”. Sve dosad.

“Stari način” (“The Old Way”) redatelja Bretta Donowhoa drugi je od dva uzastopna Cageova vesterna nakon “Butcher’s Crossing”. Dok potonji još čekamo u Hrvatskoj, “Stari način” je premijerno osvanuo u “A1 Videoteci”.

“The Old Way” se pojavio nakon što je Cage doživio glumačku mini-renesansu s filmovima kao što su “Svinja”, “Nepodnošljiva težina golemog talenta” i “Renfield”, nemjerljivo boljim od njegovog direktno-na-video prosjeka zadnjih godina (“Nepodmireni dugovi”, “Udruženi s vragom”, “Predatorski instinkt”, “Jiu Jitsu”). Film boravi na nekoj sredini između jednih i drugih. Nije loš, ali ni posebno dobar kao “Pig” ili “Mandy”.

Najveći problem jest što “Stari način” djeluje odveć “deja vu” u žanrovskom smislu da ga ni Cage ne može uzdići puno više iznad prosjeka, zasigurno i zato što na trenutke ostavlja dojam da kao da se ne uklapa u vestern, barem ne vestern ovako rutinske Donowhove režije (režirao direktno-na-video akcić “Acts Of Violence” s Bruceom Willisom), tj. postavke i karakterizacije iz scenarija Carla W. Lucasa (superiorniji “Val” s Justinom Longom).

Predstavljanje Cageova lika Coltona Briggsa klasično je vesternsko, od pogleda ispod šešira do brzog potezanja kolta. Colton baš i nije neki pozitivac među kaubojima-revolverašima kad ga upoznamo, ali ostavio je zloglasnu prošlost iza sebe i 20 godina kasnije živi mirnim životom sa suprugom Ruth (Kerry Knuppe) i kćerkom Brooke (Ryan Kiera Armstrong; otkriće nove “Potpaljivačice”).

Dakako, prošlost će ga sustići u vidu odbjeglog kažnjenika McCallistera (Noah Le Gros), sina čovjeka kojeg je Colton ubio na početku filma, kad je ovaj bio dječak. Kad Colton odvede Brooke u školu u susjedni gradić, McCallister s revolveraškim kompanjonima zaskače Ruth na obiteljskom imanju i brutalno je ubija, ali ne prije nego što mu ona najavi “čeka vas puno boli”/“probudili ste vraga”, misleći na suprugovu osvetu.

Uvidjevši što se dogodilo, Colton traži imena odgovornih od šerifa i spreman se na put osvete, a sa sobom vodi i kćerku koju će naučiti pucati itd. U tom trenutku “The Old Way” postaje gledljiva, ali ne pretjerano nadahnuta mješavina bitno kvalitetnijih vesterna, revizionističkih “Nepomirljivih” i tradicionalnijeg “Čovjeka zvanog hrabrost”. Vesterni devedesetih poput “Legendarnog Tombstonea” bolje su povezivali suprotne polove žanra od “Starog načina”.

Lijepo je da Cage drži vestern na životu, ali “The Old Way” je, kao i “Dead For a Dollar”, inferiorniji novijim primjercima šireg žanra poput “Zemlje bez zakona”, “Odbjeglog Djanga”, “Mrske osmorke”, “Ratne sjekire”, “Sedmorice veličanstvenih”, “Neprijatelja”, “Neda Kellyja”, “Novosti iz svijeta”, “Tko nisko pada”...

Najbolja stvar “Starog načina” je odnos Coltona i kćerke koji se fino nadovezuje na karakternu dinamiku filma “True Grit” i Cageova “Kick-Assa”, predstavljajući novu mladu zvijezdu u usponu. Mala Armstrong je odlična, dostojna Hailee Steinfeld u “Čovjeku zvanom hrabrost” i Chloe Moretz u “Kick-Assu”.

Nastavak ‘Gospodara rata‘

Neumornog Nicolasa Cagea bi ovog ljeta trebali gledati u filmu "Sympathy For The Devil", a priprema i nastavak "Gospodara rata".

Western s Nicolasom Cageom? Zvuči neobično, no potentno. Zvjezdani oskarovac Cage snimio je u karijeri filmove iz takoreći svih žanrova, od komedija do drama, od akcija, do trilera i horora, ali ne i vestern s kojim je koketirao u “Arizona Junioru”, “Zabavnom parku noćnih mora” i “Zatvorenicima zemlje duhova”. Sve dosad.

“Stari način” (“The Old Way”) redatelja Bretta Donowhoa drugi je od dva uzastopna Cageova vesterna nakon “Butcher’s Crossing”. Dok potonji još čekamo u Hrvatskoj, “Stari način” je premijerno osvanuo u “A1 Videoteci”.

“The Old Way” se pojavio nakon što je Cage doživio glumačku mini-renesansu s filmovima kao što su “Svinja”, “Nepodnošljiva težina golemog talenta” i “Renfield”, nemjerljivo boljim od njegovog direktno-na-video prosjeka zadnjih godina (“Nepodmireni dugovi”, “Udruženi s vragom”, “Predatorski instinkt”, “Jiu Jitsu”). Film boravi na nekoj sredini između jednih i drugih. Nije loš, ali ni posebno dobar kao “Pig” ili “Mandy”.

Najveći problem jest što “Stari način” djeluje odveć “deja vu” u žanrovskom smislu da ga ni Cage ne može uzdići puno više iznad prosjeka, zasigurno i zato što na trenutke ostavlja dojam da kao da se ne uklapa u vestern, barem ne vestern ovako rutinske Donowhove režije (režirao direktno-na-video akcić “Acts Of Violence” s Bruceom Willisom), tj. postavke i karakterizacije iz scenarija Carla W. Lucasa (superiorniji “Val” s Justinom Longom).

Predstavljanje Cageova lika Coltona Briggsa klasično je vesternsko, od pogleda ispod šešira do brzog potezanja kolta. Colton baš i nije neki pozitivac među kaubojima-revolverašima kad ga upoznamo, ali ostavio je zloglasnu prošlost iza sebe i 20 godina kasnije živi mirnim životom sa suprugom Ruth (Kerry Knuppe) i kćerkom Brooke (Ryan Kiera Armstrong; otkriće nove “Potpaljivačice”).

Dakako, prošlost će ga sustići u vidu odbjeglog kažnjenika McCallistera (Noah Le Gros), sina čovjeka kojeg je Colton ubio na početku filma, kad je ovaj bio dječak. Kad Colton odvede Brooke u školu u susjedni gradić, McCallister s revolveraškim kompanjonima zaskače Ruth na obiteljskom imanju i brutalno je ubija, ali ne prije nego što mu ona najavi “čeka vas puno boli”/“probudili ste vraga”, misleći na suprugovu osvetu.

Uvidjevši što se dogodilo, Colton traži imena odgovornih od šerifa i spreman se na put osvete, a sa sobom vodi i kćerku koju će naučiti pucati itd. U tom trenutku “The Old Way” postaje gledljiva, ali ne pretjerano nadahnuta mješavina bitno kvalitetnijih vesterna, revizionističkih “Nepomirljivih” i tradicionalnijeg “Čovjeka zvanog hrabrost”. Vesterni devedesetih poput “Legendarnog Tombstonea” bolje su povezivali suprotne polove žanra od “Starog načina”.

Lijepo je da Cage drži vestern na životu, ali “The Old Way” je, kao i “Dead For a Dollar”, inferiorniji novijim primjercima šireg žanra poput “Zemlje bez zakona”, “Odbjeglog Djanga”, “Mrske osmorke”, “Ratne sjekire”, “Sedmorice veličanstvenih”, “Neprijatelja”, “Neda Kellyja”, “Novosti iz svijeta”, “Tko nisko pada”...

Najbolja stvar “Starog načina” je odnos Coltona i kćerke koji se fino nadovezuje na karakternu dinamiku filma “True Grit” i Cageova “Kick-Assa”, predstavljajući novu mladu zvijezdu u usponu. Mala Armstrong je odlična, dostojna Hailee Steinfeld u “Čovjeku zvanom hrabrost” i Chloe Moretz u “Kick-Assu”.

Nastavak ‘Gospodara rata‘

Neumornog Nicolasa Cagea bi ovog ljeta trebali gledati u filmu "Sympathy For The Devil", a priprema i nastavak "Gospodara rata".
