Takoreći više vrijedi jedan "Cat Chaser" (1989.) s kraja osamdesetih nego jedanaest filmova Abela Ferrare iz novog milenija. Naravno, malčice pretjerujemo, no Ferrarin "Cat Chaser" dođe kao melem za oči umorne od njegovog posljednjeg "artsy fartsy" ostvarenja "Zeroes and Ones". To kažemo za "noir" triler pun mana, ali koji je unatoč tome sasvim sočan komad filma, "movie", a ne filmski roman nepovezanog pandemijskog toka/šoka svijesti.

Pa opet, mana je jednostavno moralo biti kad se čovjek prisjeti problematične povijesti "Cat Chasera". Ferrarin film snimljen je u njegovoj veoma kreativnoj fazi i kronološki smješten između "Ms.45", "Fear City" i "China Girl" s jedne strane te "Kralja New Yorka" i "Okorjelog poručnika" s druge.

K tome, Ferrara je, uz pomoć scenarista Jamesa Borrellija, ekranizirao roman prvaka suvremenije kriminalističke proze Elmorea Leonarda čiji su romani tek u devedesetima doživjeli dostojan tretman ("Jackie Brown", "Daleko od očiju"), film su producirali Peter S. Davis i William N. Panzer ("Highlander"), a za glavne uloge angažirani ondašnji glumci u zvjezdanom usponu Peter Weller ("Avanture Buckaroo Banzaija", "RoboCop") i Kelly McGillis ("Svjedok", "Top Gun").

Sve je mirisalo na uspjeh. Međutim, Weller i McGillis se nisu dobro slagali na snimanju, a zvijezda "Top Guna" se zakačila i s Ferrarom nakon scene u kojoj se glumičin lik trebao svući uz prijetnju pištolja, kasnije uperenog u međunožje protagonistice. Navodno McGillis nije zamjerila Ferrari što je ta (nelaskava, ponižavajuća) scena postojala u scenariju, već što je za snimanje te scene, opet navodno, režiser razmatrao uzeti dublericu jer mu glumica, kao, nije dovoljno lijepa (!?).

Pred sami kraj snimanja filma Kelly je obrijala glavu na nulericu da je slučajno ne zovu za nadosnimavanje neke scene i ozbiljno razmatrala povući se iz glume, nakon lošeg iskustva sa seta "Cat Chasera" u kojem je Ferrara režirao i scenu skidanja dvojice muškaraca na nišanu pištolja s prigušivačem koji će u ovom slučaju opaliti i obojati zidove njihovom krvlju u prizorima štrcajućeg "splatter" nasilja.

Problemi tijekom produkcije "Cat Chasera" preselili su se i u njegovu postprodukciju. Naime, "Cat Chaser" je nastao u produkciji kompanije Vestron Pictures, tijekom osamdesetih specijalizirane za manje, nerijetko i "B" filmove koji su znali postati veliki hitovi u kinima ili, češće, na videu ("Prljavi ples", "Čelična zora", "Mladi revolveraši"...).

Peh je bio taj da se Vestron 1989. našao pod prijetnjom bankrota, što se odrazilo na tretman filma. Čelnici kompanije su u panici preuzeli film od Ferrare i, ne bi li ga načinili što komercijalnijim, redateljevu izvornu, gotovo trosatnu verziju skratili za pola na 90-ak minuta i naknadno dodali besmislenu "noirovsku" naraciju neutralnog naratora (glas Renija Santonija; "Prljavi Harry", "Kobra").

Na kraju je film, pod teretom loše usmene predaje o problematičnoj (post)produkciji, dobio limitiranu kinodistribuciju i u većini zemalja svijeta bio plasiran direktno na video, odnosno doživio debakl i potonuo u opskurnosti, odakle ga najviše sam redatelj osobno izvuče kad prikaže "director's cut" za odabrane na ponekom festivalu ili neki najljući filmofil kad mu se nađe na usnama prilikom raspredanja o Ferrarinu opusu i modernim "noir" filmovima.

Redateljska verzija je nedvojbeno suvislija i kompaktnija po pitanju konciznijeg tretmana likova i zapleta, ali "Cat Chaser" i ovakav kakav jest nije nezanimljiv i baš tako loš, računajući neslavnu reputaciju koja ga prati. Kakav je Ferrara bio redatelj, podsjeća početna crno-bijela scena režirana u rangu Olivera Stonea.

Uvodna špica vrti kadrove ratom razorenog Santa Dominga tijekom američke invazije na Dominikansku Republiku. "Vjerojatno se ne sjećate tog malog rata", cinično će narator prije nego što se radnja preseli na Floridu i upozna nas s vlasnikom trećerazrednog hotela Georgeom Moranom (Weller) u trenutku dok čisti bazen.

George je bio padobranac u invaziji na Dominikansku Republiku i proganja ga sudjelovanje u tom ratu, kao i tamošnja mlada djevojka koja je njegovom vodu dala ime Cat Chaser. Nije George zaljubljen u nju, samo se pita gdje je sada i je li živa.

S druge strane, George je zaljubljen u Mary (McGillis), suprugu Andresa De Boye (Tomas Milian), imućne političke figure Santa Dominga i čovjeka koji se bavi sumnjivim poslovima. Andres sumnja da njegova trofejna žena ima ljubavnika i u pravu je: Mary se sastaje s Georgeom.

"Odluči se hoćeš li držati mene ili to pivo", namigne mu "femme fataleovski", nakon čega završe u razgolićenom zagrljaju. "Mislim da smo zapalili fitilj", kažu ljubavnici razmišljajući da odjedre u zalazak sunca. Iako prema toj sceni "Cat Chaser" najavljuje da pali fitilj erotskog trilera sa seksom i golotinjom, film je prije svega "neo-noir", više "Tjelesna strast" nego "Sirove strasti".

Mary voli Georgea, za razliku od "dosadnog" supruga, ali i voli "biti bogata", što joj omogućava predbračni ugovor i dobitak od dva milijuna dolara u slučaju rastave. Međutim, stvari se "noirovski" kompliciraju kad zaplet zaigra igru mačke i miša, tj. kad u priču uđe Jiggs Scully (veteran Charles Durning), bivši policajac i sadašnji "poslovni savjetnik" koji zna za zaljubljene golupčiće i namjerio se na Andresov novac/dva milijuna dolara, a ovaj natjera Mary da potpiše rastavu i novi ugovor prema kojem neće dobiti ništa.

"Noir" je zavučen pod golu kožu filma, što je jasno prema likovima, zapletu i "tvrdokuhanim" rečenicama tipa "Čudno kako možeš reći istinu i svejedno se osjećati krivim", "Ako ti nemaš najveća muda u gradu, ne znam tko ima" ili "Od tisuću hotela na plaži, zašto su odabrali ovaj?".

Leonard zna s riječima, ali suvišna naracija je često preočita u dodatnom oslikavanju prirode likova iz sfere ljudskog ološa ("Svi smo mi životinje") za što su nekad dovoljni pogledi, govori tijela ili ono što sami izgovaraju. Možda bi naracija bila prirodnija da je djelo Wellera ili nekog lika direktno uvučenog u priču, no vjerojatno bi i tada djelovala nepotrebno.

Ilustracije radi, zamislite "Body Heat" s naracijom kao nekakvu preteču "Cat Chasera" s atmosferom sunčanog "noira", dvostrukim obmanama, probisvjetovima, gadovima, fatalnim ženama i zapletom starim kao starost kojeg nanovo pomlađuje nova generacija glumaca, s naglaskom na McGillis kao prilično dostojnu nasljednicu Kathleen Turner na koju djelomično i sliči.

Ako "Cat Chaser" nije tako dobar kao spomenuti klasik, ima dobre glumce. Weller je solidan u ulozi "noir" protagonista s demonima prošlosti, Durning je primjereno ljigav, a McGillis dojmljiva kao "femme fatale", nesputana "ograničenjima" prijašnjih uloga. "Bolje ti je da si zaljubljen u mene", Mary veli Georgeu. Naravno da je. Tko ne bi bio?

Kelly McGillis se ipak nije odrekla glume

Iako se razmatrala odreći glume, Kelly McGillis je već 1991. glumila u drami "Grand Isle", ali trag joj se u hollywoodskoj "A" produkciji nažalost počeo polako gubiti prema kraju devedesetih.

Takoreći više vrijedi jedan "Cat Chaser" (1989.) s kraja osamdesetih nego jedanaest filmova Abela Ferrare iz novog milenija. Naravno, malčice pretjerujemo, no Ferrarin "Cat Chaser" dođe kao melem za oči umorne od njegovog posljednjeg "artsy fartsy" ostvarenja "Zeroes and Ones". To kažemo za "noir" triler pun mana, ali koji je unatoč tome sasvim sočan komad filma, "movie", a ne filmski roman nepovezanog pandemijskog toka/šoka svijesti.

Pa opet, mana je jednostavno moralo biti kad se čovjek prisjeti problematične povijesti "Cat Chasera". Ferrarin film snimljen je u njegovoj veoma kreativnoj fazi i kronološki smješten između "Ms.45", "Fear City" i "China Girl" s jedne strane te "Kralja New Yorka" i "Okorjelog poručnika" s druge.

K tome, Ferrara je, uz pomoć scenarista Jamesa Borrellija, ekranizirao roman prvaka suvremenije kriminalističke proze Elmorea Leonarda čiji su romani tek u devedesetima doživjeli dostojan tretman ("Jackie Brown", "Daleko od očiju"), film su producirali Peter S. Davis i William N. Panzer ("Highlander"), a za glavne uloge angažirani ondašnji glumci u zvjezdanom usponu Peter Weller ("Avanture Buckaroo Banzaija", "RoboCop") i Kelly McGillis ("Svjedok", "Top Gun").

Sve je mirisalo na uspjeh. Međutim, Weller i McGillis se nisu dobro slagali na snimanju, a zvijezda "Top Guna" se zakačila i s Ferrarom nakon scene u kojoj se glumičin lik trebao svući uz prijetnju pištolja, kasnije uperenog u međunožje protagonistice. Navodno McGillis nije zamjerila Ferrari što je ta (nelaskava, ponižavajuća) scena postojala u scenariju, već što je za snimanje te scene, opet navodno, režiser razmatrao uzeti dublericu jer mu glumica, kao, nije dovoljno lijepa (!?).

Pred sami kraj snimanja filma Kelly je obrijala glavu na nulericu da je slučajno ne zovu za nadosnimavanje neke scene i ozbiljno razmatrala povući se iz glume, nakon lošeg iskustva sa seta "Cat Chasera" u kojem je Ferrara režirao i scenu skidanja dvojice muškaraca na nišanu pištolja s prigušivačem koji će u ovom slučaju opaliti i obojati zidove njihovom krvlju u prizorima štrcajućeg "splatter" nasilja.

Problemi tijekom produkcije "Cat Chasera" preselili su se i u njegovu postprodukciju. Naime, "Cat Chaser" je nastao u produkciji kompanije Vestron Pictures, tijekom osamdesetih specijalizirane za manje, nerijetko i "B" filmove koji su znali postati veliki hitovi u kinima ili, češće, na videu ("Prljavi ples", "Čelična zora", "Mladi revolveraši"...).

Peh je bio taj da se Vestron 1989. našao pod prijetnjom bankrota, što se odrazilo na tretman filma. Čelnici kompanije su u panici preuzeli film od Ferrare i, ne bi li ga načinili što komercijalnijim, redateljevu izvornu, gotovo trosatnu verziju skratili za pola na 90-ak minuta i naknadno dodali besmislenu "noirovsku" naraciju neutralnog naratora (glas Renija Santonija; "Prljavi Harry", "Kobra").

Na kraju je film, pod teretom loše usmene predaje o problematičnoj (post)produkciji, dobio limitiranu kinodistribuciju i u većini zemalja svijeta bio plasiran direktno na video, odnosno doživio debakl i potonuo u opskurnosti, odakle ga najviše sam redatelj osobno izvuče kad prikaže "director's cut" za odabrane na ponekom festivalu ili neki najljući filmofil kad mu se nađe na usnama prilikom raspredanja o Ferrarinu opusu i modernim "noir" filmovima.

Redateljska verzija je nedvojbeno suvislija i kompaktnija po pitanju konciznijeg tretmana likova i zapleta, ali "Cat Chaser" i ovakav kakav jest nije nezanimljiv i baš tako loš, računajući neslavnu reputaciju koja ga prati. Kakav je Ferrara bio redatelj, podsjeća početna crno-bijela scena režirana u rangu Olivera Stonea.

Uvodna špica vrti kadrove ratom razorenog Santa Dominga tijekom američke invazije na Dominikansku Republiku. "Vjerojatno se ne sjećate tog malog rata", cinično će narator prije nego što se radnja preseli na Floridu i upozna nas s vlasnikom trećerazrednog hotela Georgeom Moranom (Weller) u trenutku dok čisti bazen.

George je bio padobranac u invaziji na Dominikansku Republiku i proganja ga sudjelovanje u tom ratu, kao i tamošnja mlada djevojka koja je njegovom vodu dala ime Cat Chaser. Nije George zaljubljen u nju, samo se pita gdje je sada i je li živa.

S druge strane, George je zaljubljen u Mary (McGillis), suprugu Andresa De Boye (Tomas Milian), imućne političke figure Santa Dominga i čovjeka koji se bavi sumnjivim poslovima. Andres sumnja da njegova trofejna žena ima ljubavnika i u pravu je: Mary se sastaje s Georgeom.

"Odluči se hoćeš li držati mene ili to pivo", namigne mu "femme fataleovski", nakon čega završe u razgolićenom zagrljaju. "Mislim da smo zapalili fitilj", kažu ljubavnici razmišljajući da odjedre u zalazak sunca. Iako prema toj sceni "Cat Chaser" najavljuje da pali fitilj erotskog trilera sa seksom i golotinjom, film je prije svega "neo-noir", više "Tjelesna strast" nego "Sirove strasti".

Mary voli Georgea, za razliku od "dosadnog" supruga, ali i voli "biti bogata", što joj omogućava predbračni ugovor i dobitak od dva milijuna dolara u slučaju rastave. Međutim, stvari se "noirovski" kompliciraju kad zaplet zaigra igru mačke i miša, tj. kad u priču uđe Jiggs Scully (veteran Charles Durning), bivši policajac i sadašnji "poslovni savjetnik" koji zna za zaljubljene golupčiće i namjerio se na Andresov novac/dva milijuna dolara, a ovaj natjera Mary da potpiše rastavu i novi ugovor prema kojem neće dobiti ništa.

"Noir" je zavučen pod golu kožu filma, što je jasno prema likovima, zapletu i "tvrdokuhanim" rečenicama tipa "Čudno kako možeš reći istinu i svejedno se osjećati krivim", "Ako ti nemaš najveća muda u gradu, ne znam tko ima" ili "Od tisuću hotela na plaži, zašto su odabrali ovaj?".

Leonard zna s riječima, ali suvišna naracija je često preočita u dodatnom oslikavanju prirode likova iz sfere ljudskog ološa ("Svi smo mi životinje") za što su nekad dovoljni pogledi, govori tijela ili ono što sami izgovaraju. Možda bi naracija bila prirodnija da je djelo Wellera ili nekog lika direktno uvučenog u priču, no vjerojatno bi i tada djelovala nepotrebno.

Ilustracije radi, zamislite "Body Heat" s naracijom kao nekakvu preteču "Cat Chasera" s atmosferom sunčanog "noira", dvostrukim obmanama, probisvjetovima, gadovima, fatalnim ženama i zapletom starim kao starost kojeg nanovo pomlađuje nova generacija glumaca, s naglaskom na McGillis kao prilično dostojnu nasljednicu Kathleen Turner na koju djelomično i sliči.

Ako "Cat Chaser" nije tako dobar kao spomenuti klasik, ima dobre glumce. Weller je solidan u ulozi "noir" protagonista s demonima prošlosti, Durning je primjereno ljigav, a McGillis dojmljiva kao "femme fatale", nesputana "ograničenjima" prijašnjih uloga. "Bolje ti je da si zaljubljen u mene", Mary veli Georgeu. Naravno da je. Tko ne bi bio?

Kelly McGillis se ipak nije odrekla glume

Iako se razmatrala odreći glume, Kelly McGillis je već 1991. glumila u drami "Grand Isle", ali trag joj se u hollywoodskoj "A" produkciji nažalost počeo polako gubiti prema kraju devedesetih.
