Kada su Europljani prvi puta stigli na Uskršnji otok, iznenadili su se vidjevši starosjedioce kako utažuju žeđ pijući izravno iz mora. Uz čuvene otočke divovske kipove Moaija, bio je to misterij koji je dugo vremena zaokupljao umove istraživača i znanstvenika. Istraživači su kasnije doznali da je opskrba pitkom vodom dolazila iz slatkovodnih 'priobalnih cijevi'. No tek su ovoga mjeseca saznali cijelu priču.

Prema Robertu DiNapoliju, postdoktorskom znanstvenom suradniku na studijima okoliša i antropologiji na Sveučilištu Binghamton, kišnica na Uskršnjem otoku tone izravno kroz poroznu podlogu u podzemni vodonosnik (tijelo porozne stijene ili sedimenta u kojem je koncentrirana voda). Tada se uz obalu pojavilo i nešto poznato kao "priobalna cijev" - džepovi slatke vode koji kaplju u ocean, prenosi Jutarnji.

"Pomalo je slano, ali nije neukusno slano... Jednostavno, to nije voda najboljeg okusa", objašnjava DiNapoli.

Suvremena tehnologija

Studija, koju su proveli DiNapoli i kolege istraživači sa Sveučilišta Binghamton, usvojila je suvremenu tehnologiju za lociranje džepova ovog obalnog prosipanja, kreirajući sustavniji pristup pronalaženja slatke vode. Znanstvenici su koristili tehnologiju bespilotnih letjelica s termovizijskim kamerama za identifikaciju priobalja. Praksa je to koja se inače koristi u sličnim istraživanjima na Havajima.

Uz pomoć bespilotnih letjelica, istraživači su stekli dublje razumijevanje o tome kako su stanovnici Rapa Nuija kroz povijest koristili vodoopskrbu za opskrbu lokalnih zajednica. Upravo to istraživanje može otvoriti put za buduće studije o prevenciji suše.

Antropolozi su tako otkrili da su stanovnici Rapa Nuija, osim što su prikupljali slatku vodu iz džepova priobalja, izgradili podvodne brane u oceanu kako bi zadržali svježu i morsku vodu odvojeno i izgradili bunare koji su preusmjeravali vodu iz vodonosnika prije nego što su došli do mora.

Uskršnji otok nije dom rijekama ili potocima, a ima samo tri mala jezera koja vrlo lako mogu presušiti.

"Bili su suočeni s vrlo teškim mjestom za život i smislili su ove zanimljive strategije preživljavanja", kaže DiNapoli.

Ograničene zalihe

Mjesta poput Uskršnjeg otoka već su sklona sušama zbog ograničenih zaliha slatke vode. To ih čini među zajednicama najugroženijima uslijed moguće nestašice vode.

Rezultati ove studije poslužit će kao osnova za spin-off istraživački projekt, financiran sredstvima National Geographica, kojim će se nastoji razumjeti kako obalna cijev funkcionira tijekom razdoblja produženih suša.

Godišnje je 55 milijuna ljudi pogođeno sušom, a četiri posto svjetske populacije kronično nedostaje pitke vode. UN je postavio Cilj održivog razvoja, koji kaže da svi ljudi moraju imati pristup vodi i kanalizaciji do 2030. godine.

Suše prijete i Europi. Rast stanovništva, urbanizacija i turizam doprinose problemima s vodoopskrbom, dok suše sve češće pogađaju brojna područja u Europi, naročito na Mediteranu. Štoviše, očekuje se da će stanje biti sve gore zbog klimatskih promjena. Prema procjenama, do 2030. godine polovica riječnih sljevova u Europi bit će pogođena nestašicama. Kako bi se zaštitili izvori vode za budućnost, Europski parlament odobrio je 13. svibnja 2019. nova pravila za ponovnu uporabu vode u poljoprivredi.

Novim pravilima želi se potaknuti korištenje reciklirane vode za navodnjavanje u poljoprivredi, jer taj sektor troši gotovo polovicu sve vode godišnje u EU-u. Veće ponovno korištenje vode u poljoprivredi smanjilo bi pritisak na izvore za oko pet posto godišnje. Kako bi se zaštitili usjevi, nova pravila uključuju i standarde za kvalitetu reciklirane vode, stalni nadzor kvalitete vode, dok postrojenja za pročišćavanje otpadnih voda trebaju imati plan za upravljanje rizicima. Uprave u državama članicama izdavale bi dozvole za postrojenja za pročišćavanje i pratile poštuju li se pravila. Zajednička europska pravila također bi osigurala uvjete za tržišno natjecanje postrojenja i poljoprivrednika te spriječila da se stvaraju prepreke za slobodno kretanje poljoprivrednih proizvoda.

Kada su Europljani prvi puta stigli na Uskršnji otok, iznenadili su se vidjevši starosjedioce kako utažuju žeđ pijući izravno iz mora. Uz čuvene otočke divovske kipove Moaija, bio je to misterij koji je dugo vremena zaokupljao umove istraživača i znanstvenika. Istraživači su kasnije doznali da je opskrba pitkom vodom dolazila iz slatkovodnih 'priobalnih cijevi'. No tek su ovoga mjeseca saznali cijelu priču.

Prema Robertu DiNapoliju, postdoktorskom znanstvenom suradniku na studijima okoliša i antropologiji na Sveučilištu Binghamton, kišnica na Uskršnjem otoku tone izravno kroz poroznu podlogu u podzemni vodonosnik (tijelo porozne stijene ili sedimenta u kojem je koncentrirana voda). Tada se uz obalu pojavilo i nešto poznato kao "priobalna cijev" - džepovi slatke vode koji kaplju u ocean, prenosi Jutarnji.

"Pomalo je slano, ali nije neukusno slano... Jednostavno, to nije voda najboljeg okusa", objašnjava DiNapoli.

Suvremena tehnologija

Studija, koju su proveli DiNapoli i kolege istraživači sa Sveučilišta Binghamton, usvojila je suvremenu tehnologiju za lociranje džepova ovog obalnog prosipanja, kreirajući sustavniji pristup pronalaženja slatke vode. Znanstvenici su koristili tehnologiju bespilotnih letjelica s termovizijskim kamerama za identifikaciju priobalja. Praksa je to koja se inače koristi u sličnim istraživanjima na Havajima.

Uz pomoć bespilotnih letjelica, istraživači su stekli dublje razumijevanje o tome kako su stanovnici Rapa Nuija kroz povijest koristili vodoopskrbu za opskrbu lokalnih zajednica. Upravo to istraživanje može otvoriti put za buduće studije o prevenciji suše.

Antropolozi su tako otkrili da su stanovnici Rapa Nuija, osim što su prikupljali slatku vodu iz džepova priobalja, izgradili podvodne brane u oceanu kako bi zadržali svježu i morsku vodu odvojeno i izgradili bunare koji su preusmjeravali vodu iz vodonosnika prije nego što su došli do mora.

Uskršnji otok nije dom rijekama ili potocima, a ima samo tri mala jezera koja vrlo lako mogu presušiti.

"Bili su suočeni s vrlo teškim mjestom za život i smislili su ove zanimljive strategije preživljavanja", kaže DiNapoli.

Ograničene zalihe

Mjesta poput Uskršnjeg otoka već su sklona sušama zbog ograničenih zaliha slatke vode. To ih čini među zajednicama najugroženijima uslijed moguće nestašice vode.

Rezultati ove studije poslužit će kao osnova za spin-off istraživački projekt, financiran sredstvima National Geographica, kojim će se nastoji razumjeti kako obalna cijev funkcionira tijekom razdoblja produženih suša.

Godišnje je 55 milijuna ljudi pogođeno sušom, a četiri posto svjetske populacije kronično nedostaje pitke vode. UN je postavio Cilj održivog razvoja, koji kaže da svi ljudi moraju imati pristup vodi i kanalizaciji do 2030. godine.

Suše prijete i Europi. Rast stanovništva, urbanizacija i turizam doprinose problemima s vodoopskrbom, dok suše sve češće pogađaju brojna područja u Europi, naročito na Mediteranu. Štoviše, očekuje se da će stanje biti sve gore zbog klimatskih promjena. Prema procjenama, do 2030. godine polovica riječnih sljevova u Europi bit će pogođena nestašicama. Kako bi se zaštitili izvori vode za budućnost, Europski parlament odobrio je 13. svibnja 2019. nova pravila za ponovnu uporabu vode u poljoprivredi.

Novim pravilima želi se potaknuti korištenje reciklirane vode za navodnjavanje u poljoprivredi, jer taj sektor troši gotovo polovicu sve vode godišnje u EU-u. Veće ponovno korištenje vode u poljoprivredi smanjilo bi pritisak na izvore za oko pet posto godišnje. Kako bi se zaštitili usjevi, nova pravila uključuju i standarde za kvalitetu reciklirane vode, stalni nadzor kvalitete vode, dok postrojenja za pročišćavanje otpadnih voda trebaju imati plan za upravljanje rizicima. Uprave u državama članicama izdavale bi dozvole za postrojenja za pročišćavanje i pratile poštuju li se pravila. Zajednička europska pravila također bi osigurala uvjete za tržišno natjecanje postrojenja i poljoprivrednika te spriječila da se stvaraju prepreke za slobodno kretanje poljoprivrednih proizvoda.

Kada su Europljani prvi puta stigli na Uskršnji otok, iznenadili su se vidjevši starosjedioce kako utažuju žeđ pijući izravno iz mora. Uz čuvene otočke divovske kipove Moaija, bio je to misterij koji je dugo vremena zaokupljao umove istraživača i znanstvenika. Istraživači su kasnije doznali da je opskrba pitkom vodom dolazila iz slatkovodnih 'priobalnih cijevi'. No tek su ovoga mjeseca saznali cijelu priču.

Prema Robertu DiNapoliju, postdoktorskom znanstvenom suradniku na studijima okoliša i antropologiji na Sveučilištu Binghamton, kišnica na Uskršnjem otoku tone izravno kroz poroznu podlogu u podzemni vodonosnik (tijelo porozne stijene ili sedimenta u kojem je koncentrirana voda).
