U najnovijem istraživanju objavljenom u uglednom časopisu u području znanosti o moru, međunarodni istraživački tim predvođen znanstvenicom dr. sc. Cléom Denamiel s Instituta Ruđer Bošković (IRB) predstavio je inovativni koncept sustava upozoravanja na obalne hazarde koji se temelji na stohastičkim metodama, stoji u priopćenju IRB-a.

Pojednostavljeno rečeno, sadašnji sustavi upozoravanja temelje se na numeričkim metodama koje zahtijevaju napredene računalne resurse, na taj način ostavljajući izrazit ugljični otisak ('carbon footprint') na okoliš, dok se predloženom primjenom stohastičkih metoda optimizira prognoza obalnog hazarda te mnogostruko smanjuju potrebe za računalnim resursima, uz to uzimajući u obzir elemente neuređenosti ili slučajnosti.

Rad je objavljen u prestižnom časopisu Frontiers in Marine Science koji je rangiran u prvih deset posto časopisa u području biologije mora i voda.

Kako unaprijediti sustave ranog upozorenja?

Obalna područja su pod sve većim utjecajem klimatskih hazarda, napose porasta razine mora, te se predviđa da će hazardi povezani s ekstremnim razinama mora imati izravan utjecaj na oko 630 milijuna ljudi do 2100. godine.

Brojne operativne prognoze i sustavi ranog upozoravanja na obalne hazarde su u uporabi u svjetskim morima, kao podloga za upravljanje kriznim situacijama, ublažavanje mogućih šteta i zaštitu ljudskih života. Poplavljivanje Venecije je primjer iz susjedstva, gdje se temeljem prognoze fenomena 'visoke vode' (tzv. 'aqua alta') aktivira sustav zaštitnih brana 'Mojsije' na ulazu u lagunu.

Međutim, svi ti sustavi upozoravanja su temeljeni na determinističkim alatima visoke razlučivosti, poput numeričkih oceanskih i atmosferskih modela ili na njihovim mnogostrukim realizacijama, koji su izuzetno zahtjevni u smislu potrebnih računalnih resursa (računarstva visokih performansi). Za detaljno kartiranje hazarda uzduž obale potrebni su numerički modeli kilometarske do metarske razlučivosti.

Kao rješenje, međunarodni autorski tim u radu pod naslovom ''Conceptual design of extreme sea-level early warning systems based on uncertainty quantification and engineering optimization methods'' predlaže inovativan pristup sustavima upozoravanja i kvantificiranja obalnog hazarda temeljen na stohastičkim metodama i metodama optimizacije.

''Predloženi pristup bi zahtijevao bitno manje (za nekoliko redova veličine) računalne resurse, uz zadržavanje ili čak popravljanje pouzdanosti same prognoze i procjene obalnog hazarda,'' objašnjava dr. Vilibić.

Ovaj novi koncept koristi robustne matematičke metode učenja, i temelji se na trima alatima, kojima bi se usklađivala prognoza hazarda s opažanjima. Prvi alat su surogatni stohastički modeli za prognozu vjerojatnosti obalnog hazarda koji se temelje na metodama strojnog učenja, gausovskih procesa i polinomskog razvoja kaosa.

Drugi alat, na kojem se temelji ovaj inovativni koncept, je tzv. Bayesova inferencija koja bi omogućila brzu asimilaciju podataka, dok kao treći alat znanstvenici navode metodu optimalnog eksperimentalnog dizajna pomoću kojeg bi se definirala optimalna mreža mjernih postaja i mjerenih varijabli korištenih za brzu asimilaciju podataka.

Da navedeni pristup ima budućnost, potvrđuje primjena stohastičnog surogatnog modela na obalni hazard meteoroloških tsunamija – valova dugog perioda koji mogu poprimiti višemetarske visine u pojedinim uvalama i lukama, kao što su Vela Luka, Stari Grad i Mali Lošinj. Temeljem toga, autori diskutiraju mogućnosti primjene ovog koncepta na druge obalne hazarde koji mogu izazvati ljudske žrtve i štete u iznosima i većim od nekoliko milijardi eura.

Kao primjer u radu su istaknuti uragani, za koje je detaljno razrađen koncept stohastičkog surogatnog sustava na rano upozoravanje. Time bi se moglo bitno popraviti postojeći sustavi upozoravanja, primjerice, Američke administracije za oceane i atmosferu (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA) na uragane u području Atlantskog i Tihog oceana, kažu u IRB-u.

U najnovijem istraživanju objavljenom u uglednom časopisu u području znanosti o moru, međunarodni istraživački tim predvođen znanstvenicom dr. sc. Cléom Denamiel s Instituta Ruđer Bošković (IRB) predstavio je inovativni koncept sustava upozoravanja na obalne hazarde koji se temelji na stohastičkim metodama, stoji u priopćenju IRB-a.

Pojednostavljeno rečeno, sadašnji sustavi upozoravanja temelje se na numeričkim metodama koje zahtijevaju napredene računalne resurse, na taj način ostavljajući izrazit ugljični otisak ('carbon footprint') na okoliš, dok se predloženom primjenom stohastičkih metoda optimizira prognoza obalnog hazarda te mnogostruko smanjuju potrebe za računalnim resursima, uz to uzimajući u obzir elemente neuređenosti ili slučajnosti.

Rad je objavljen u prestižnom časopisu Frontiers in Marine Science koji je rangiran u prvih deset posto časopisa u području biologije mora i voda.

Kako unaprijediti sustave ranog upozorenja?

Obalna područja su pod sve većim utjecajem klimatskih hazarda, napose porasta razine mora, te se predviđa da će hazardi povezani s ekstremnim razinama mora imati izravan utjecaj na oko 630 milijuna ljudi do 2100. godine.

Brojne operativne prognoze i sustavi ranog upozoravanja na obalne hazarde su u uporabi u svjetskim morima, kao podloga za upravljanje kriznim situacijama, ublažavanje mogućih šteta i zaštitu ljudskih života. Poplavljivanje Venecije je primjer iz susjedstva, gdje se temeljem prognoze fenomena 'visoke vode' (tzv. 'aqua alta') aktivira sustav zaštitnih brana 'Mojsije' na ulazu u lagunu.

Međutim, svi ti sustavi upozoravanja su temeljeni na determinističkim alatima visoke razlučivosti, poput numeričkih oceanskih i atmosferskih modela ili na njihovim mnogostrukim realizacijama, koji su izuzetno zahtjevni u smislu potrebnih računalnih resursa (računarstva visokih performansi). Za detaljno kartiranje hazarda uzduž obale potrebni su numerički modeli kilometarske do metarske razlučivosti.

Kao rješenje, međunarodni autorski tim u radu pod naslovom ''Conceptual design of extreme sea-level early warning systems based on uncertainty quantification and engineering optimization methods'' predlaže inovativan pristup sustavima upozoravanja i kvantificiranja obalnog hazarda temeljen na stohastičkim metodama i metodama optimizacije.

''Predloženi pristup bi zahtijevao bitno manje (za nekoliko redova veličine) računalne resurse, uz zadržavanje ili čak popravljanje pouzdanosti same prognoze i procjene obalnog hazarda,'' objašnjava dr. Vilibić.

Ovaj novi koncept koristi robustne matematičke metode učenja, i temelji se na trima alatima, kojima bi se usklađivala prognoza hazarda s opažanjima. Prvi alat su surogatni stohastički modeli za prognozu vjerojatnosti obalnog hazarda koji se temelje na metodama strojnog učenja, gausovskih procesa i polinomskog razvoja kaosa.

Drugi alat, na kojem se temelji ovaj inovativni koncept, je tzv. Bayesova inferencija koja bi omogućila brzu asimilaciju podataka, dok kao treći alat znanstvenici navode metodu optimalnog eksperimentalnog dizajna pomoću kojeg bi se definirala optimalna mreža mjernih postaja i mjerenih varijabli korištenih za brzu asimilaciju podataka.

Da navedeni pristup ima budućnost, potvrđuje primjena stohastičnog surogatnog modela na obalni hazard meteoroloških tsunamija – valova dugog perioda koji mogu poprimiti višemetarske visine u pojedinim uvalama i lukama, kao što su Vela Luka, Stari Grad i Mali Lošinj. Temeljem toga, autori diskutiraju mogućnosti primjene ovog koncepta na druge obalne hazarde koji mogu izazvati ljudske žrtve i štete u iznosima i većim od nekoliko milijardi eura.

Kao primjer u radu su istaknuti uragani, za koje je detaljno razrađen koncept stohastičkog surogatnog sustava na rano upozoravanje. Time bi se moglo bitno popraviti postojeći sustavi upozoravanja, primjerice, Američke administracije za oceane i atmosferu (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA) na uragane u području Atlantskog i Tihog oceana, kažu u IRB-u.
