Južnoafrički sud zabranio je u utorak britansko-nizozemskoj naftnoj kompaniji Shell korištenje seizmičkih valova u istraživanju nafte i plina u Indijskom oceanu, prihvativši upozorenja ekoloških aktivista o prijetnji za živa bića u podmorju.

Presudivši u korist aktivista, Visoki sud u gradu Makhandi kompaniji je zabranio seizmičko istraživanje u Indijskom oceanu, 20 kilometara od obale JAR-a, na dubini od 700 do tri tisuće metara.

Početkom prosinca niži sud odbacio je njihovu tužbu.

Naftni div planirao je u početnoj fazi seizmička istraživanja na 6.000 četvornih kilometara oceanske površine u blizini južnoafričke regije Wild Coast, u kojoj se nalaze brojni morski i prirodni rezervati.

Shellov plan uključuje korištenje seizmičkih udarnih valova koji se odbijaju o morsko dno, naznačujući potencijalna ležišta energetskih sirovina.

Istraživanja su trebala započeti 1. prosinca i trajati do pet mjeseci.

Aktivisti su objasnili da bi Shellov plan uključivao „izuzetno glasne udarne valove svakih 10 sekundi, 24 sata dnevno, tijekom pet mjeseci”.

„To bi utjecalo na mnoga morska stvorenja, od kitova, dupina, tuljana i pingvina do sićušnih planktona koji bi bili razneseni”, naglasila je aktivistica Janet Solomon iz ekološke grupe "Oceans, Not Oil".

U Shellu pak tvrde da su poduzeli opsežne mjere kako bi spriječili ili umanjili utjecaj istraživanja na divlje životinje, obećavši da će u radu strogo slijediti smjernice Zajedničkog odbora za očuvanje prirode, savjetnika vlade Ujedinjenog Kraljevstva za očuvanje prirode.

Kompanija je u utorak podsjetila na potencijalnu korist za JAR ako nađu naftu i plin.

"Južna Afrika jako se oslanja na uvoz energije u podmirivanju velikih energetskih potreba. Ako se na moru pronađu održivi resursi, to bi moglo značajno poboljšati energetsku sigurnost zemlje i vladine programe gospodarskog razvoja", rekao je Shellov glasnogovornik.

Južnoafričko ministarstvo energije podržalo je njihov plan, poručivši njegovim protivnicima da blokiraju ulaganja u razvoj zemlje.
Peticija za obustavu projekta skupila je gotovo 85.000 potpisa.

"Ovo je velika pobjeda. Ali borba nije gotova - sud je samo zabranio istraživanje. Rečeno nam je da se postupak nastavlja", dodala je Katherine Robinson iz nevladine organizacije Natural Justice.

Shell je pak izvijestio da je prekinuo istraživanje.

„Poštujemo odluku suda i prekinuli smo istraživanje dok ne proučimo presudu", rekao je glasnogovornik Shella.

Južnoafrički sud zabranio je u utorak britansko-nizozemskoj naftnoj kompaniji Shell korištenje seizmičkih valova u istraživanju nafte i plina u Indijskom oceanu, prihvativši upozorenja ekoloških aktivista o prijetnji za živa bića u podmorju.

Presudivši u korist aktivista, Visoki sud u gradu Makhandi kompaniji je zabranio seizmičko istraživanje u Indijskom oceanu, 20 kilometara od obale JAR-a, na dubini od 700 do tri tisuće metara.

Početkom prosinca niži sud odbacio je njihovu tužbu.

Naftni div planirao je u početnoj fazi seizmička istraživanja na 6.000 četvornih kilometara oceanske površine u blizini južnoafričke regije Wild Coast, u kojoj se nalaze brojni morski i prirodni rezervati.

Shellov plan uključuje korištenje seizmičkih udarnih valova koji se odbijaju o morsko dno, naznačujući potencijalna ležišta energetskih sirovina.

Istraživanja su trebala započeti 1. prosinca i trajati do pet mjeseci.

Aktivisti su objasnili da bi Shellov plan uključivao „izuzetno glasne udarne valove svakih 10 sekundi, 24 sata dnevno, tijekom pet mjeseci”.

„To bi utjecalo na mnoga morska stvorenja, od kitova, dupina, tuljana i pingvina do sićušnih planktona koji bi bili razneseni”, naglasila je aktivistica Janet Solomon iz ekološke grupe "Oceans, Not Oil".

U Shellu pak tvrde da su poduzeli opsežne mjere kako bi spriječili ili umanjili utjecaj istraživanja na divlje životinje, obećavši da će u radu strogo slijediti smjernice Zajedničkog odbora za očuvanje prirode, savjetnika vlade Ujedinjenog Kraljevstva za očuvanje prirode.

Kompanija je u utorak podsjetila na potencijalnu korist za JAR ako nađu naftu i plin.

"Južna Afrika jako se oslanja na uvoz energije u podmirivanju velikih energetskih potreba. Ako se na moru pronađu održivi resursi, to bi moglo značajno poboljšati energetsku sigurnost zemlje i vladine programe gospodarskog razvoja", rekao je Shellov glasnogovornik.

Južnoafričko ministarstvo energije podržalo je njihov plan, poručivši njegovim protivnicima da blokiraju ulaganja u razvoj zemlje.
Peticija za obustavu projekta skupila je gotovo 85.000 potpisa.

"Ovo je velika pobjeda. Ali borba nije gotova - sud je samo zabranio istraživanje. Rečeno nam je da se postupak nastavlja", dodala je Katherine Robinson iz nevladine organizacije Natural Justice.

Shell je pak izvijestio da je prekinuo istraživanje.

„Poštujemo odluku suda i prekinuli smo istraživanje dok ne proučimo presudu", rekao je glasnogovornik Shella.

Južnoafrički sud zabranio je u utorak britansko-nizozemskoj naftnoj kompaniji Shell korištenje seizmičkih valova u istraživanju nafte i plina u Indijskom oceanu, prihvativši upozorenja ekoloških aktivista o prijetnji za živa bića u podmorju.

Presudivši u korist aktivista, Visoki sud u gradu Makhandi kompaniji je zabranio seizmičko istraživanje u Indijskom oceanu, 20 kilometara od obale JAR-a, na dubini od 700 do tri tisuće metara.

Početkom prosinca niži sud odbacio je njihovu tužbu.

Naftni div planirao je u početnoj fazi seizmička istraživanja na 6.000 četvornih kilometara oceanske površine u blizini južnoafričke regije Wild Coast, u kojoj se nalaze brojni morski i prirodni rezervati.

Shellov plan uključuje korištenje seizmičkih udarnih valova koji se odbijaju o morsko dno, naznačujući potencijalna ležišta energetskih sirovina.

Istraživanja su trebala započeti 1. prosinca i trajati do pet mjeseci.

Aktivisti su objasnili da bi Shellov plan uključivao „izuzetno glasne udarne valove svakih 10 sekundi, 24 sata dnevno, tijekom pet mjeseci”.

„To bi utjecalo na mnoga morska stvorenja, od kitova, dupina, tuljana i pingvina do sićušnih planktona koji bi bili razneseni”, naglasila je aktivistica Janet Solomon iz ekološke grupe "Oceans, Not Oil".
