Oko tisuću pirata je više od jednog stoljeća koristilo Ile Saint-Marie, otočić četiri milje udaljen od obale Madagaskara, kao svoje skrovište i bazu iz koje su napadali brodove koji su plovili između Europe i Indije i Indonezije. Kad ne bi bili na moru, pirati su živjeli u drvenim kolibama na kojima su se vijorile iste zastave kao i na brodu na kojem su plovili. Na taj su način i na kopnu uživali zaštitu svojih kapetana.
Na ovom otoku je neko vrijeme živio gusar William Kidd, poznatiji kao Captain Kidd. Nakon smrti su morski razbojnici pokapani pod palmama na slikovitom groblju na vrhu brda s kojeg se pruža pogled na ocean. Krajem 18. stoljeća francuska mornarica zauzela je otok pirata i to je bio kraj njihovog carstva. Od 1960. Ile saint Mairie pripada Madagaskaru, a groblje pirata je njegova glavna turistička atrakcija. (V. V.)

Oko tisuću pirata je više od jednog stoljeća koristilo Ile Saint-Marie, otočić četiri milje udaljen od obale Madagaskara, kao svoje skrovište i bazu iz koje su napadali brodove koji su plovili između Europe i Indije i Indonezije. Kad ne bi bili na moru, pirati su živjeli u drvenim kolibama na kojima su se vijorile iste zastave kao i na brodu na kojem su plovili. Na taj su način i na kopnu uživali zaštitu svojih kapetana.
Na ovom otoku je neko vrijeme živio gusar William Kidd, poznatiji kao Captain Kidd. Nakon smrti su morski razbojnici pokapani pod palmama na slikovitom groblju na vrhu brda s kojeg se pruža pogled na ocean. Krajem 18. stoljeća francuska mornarica zauzela je otok pirata i to je bio kraj njihovog carstva. Od 1960. Ile saint Mairie pripada Madagaskaru, a groblje pirata je njegova glavna turistička atrakcija. (V. V.)

Oko tisuću pirata je više od jednog stoljeća koristilo Ile Saint-Marie, otočić četiri milje udaljen od obale Madagaskara, kao svoje skrovište i bazu iz koje su napadali brodove koji su plovili između Europe i Indije i Indonezije. Kad ne bi bili na moru, pirati su živjeli u drvenim kolibama na kojima su se vijorile iste zastave kao i na brodu na kojem su plovili. Na taj su način i na kopnu uživali zaštitu svojih kapetana.
Na ovom otoku je neko vrijeme živio gusar William Kidd, poznatiji kao Captain Kidd. Nakon smrti su morski razbojnici pokapani pod palmama na slikovitom groblju na vrhu brda s kojeg se pruža pogled na ocean. Krajem 18. stoljeća francuska mornarica zauzela je otok pirata i to je bio kraj njihovog carstva. Od 1960. Ile saint Mairie pripada Madagaskaru, a groblje pirata je njegova glavna turistička atrakcija. (V. V.)
