Pospremiti čitav život u dva sata filma često je nemoguća misija za redateljske biografe. Ipak, to je uspjelo poći za redateljskom rukom duetu Leo Scott-Ting Poo prilikom kroniciranja života poznatog hollywoodskog glumca Vala Kilmera. Biografski dokumentarac "Val" predstavlja nam Kilmera (r. 1959.) od malih nogu do danas.

Kilmerov život nam prolijeće pred očima kao što je njemu proletio, od djetinjstva kad je snimao filmiće s dvojicom braće, preko glumačkog uspona u osamdesetima i statusa velike zvijezde devedesetih, ali i problematičnog glumca, do zalaza karijere nakon borbe s rakom grla i gubitka glasa.

Ovo je rijetko intiman i dirljiv dokumentarni film, u isti mah tužan i životno afirmativan, istovremeno težak za gledanje i katarzičan. Intimnost ovakvog tipa je rijetka zato što su Scott i Poo dobili uvid u 40-ak godina Kilmerova života ovjekovječena videokamerom iz jedne dekade u drugu.

Film bi zasigurno bio manje dojmljiv da je klasični dokumentarac u kojem bi nas glumac u "talking head" maniri proveo kroz svoju filmografiju dočaranu foršpanima ili scenama iz filmova. Međutim, Kilmer je često držao upaljenu kameru i pasionirano snimao sličice iz svog života, koristeći svaku priliku za kadriranje sebe i (filmskog) svijeta oko sebe, na setovima u pauzama od snimanja itd.

Redateljima sigurno nije bilo lako odabrati/smontirati pozamašan materijal, ali uspjeli su pronaći mnoge zanimljive trenutke iz glumčeve prošlosti i ispresijecati ih s njegovom sadašnjosti. Kroz film nas kao narator vodi Jack Kilmer koji zvuči gotovo kao Val dok čita očeve memoare njegovim (izgubljenim) glasom, prenoseći glumčeve misli i osjećaje.

Jedna od prvih snimki s Kilmerove kamere jest zezacija na setu "Top Guna" s Rickom Rossovichem. Prije "Top Guna" Kilmer je glumio u parodiji "Top Secret", ali akcijski blockbuster s Tomom Cruiseom vinuo ga je prema zvijezdama i ovjekovječio njegovu prvu ikoničku ulogu – pilota Ledenog.

Interesantno je vidjeti Kilmerove početke na slavnom newyorškom Julliardu gdje je studirao glumu sa Seanom Pennom i Kevinom Baconom, ali i kolegicom iz "Top Guna" Kelly McGillis. Još interesantnije momente kad je na videovrpcu snimio svoju audiciju za "Dobre momke" i "Full Metal Jacket"; da uruči snimku Kubricku preletio je preko 9000 kilometara, no ulogu je kraju dobio Matthew Modine.

Audicija za "Full Metal Jacket", s tri različite intonacije, sugerirala je Kilmerov talent, ali i podcrtala njegovu buduću tragediju (gubitak glasa kao ključnog izražajnog sredstva glumca). Ubrzo, 1991., Kilmerov talent je eksplodirao izvedbom Jima Morrisona u filmu "The Doors", jednom od najboljih u devedesetima, nekim čudom nepozlaćenom barem nominacijom za Oscara, ako ne zlatnim kipićem.

Devedesete su bile Kilmerov glumački ("The Doors", "Legendarni Tombstone", "Vrućina") i zvjezdani vrhunac ("Batman zauvijek", "Svetac"). Tragajući za ulogama koje će ga "transformirati", on je doslovce postao Morrison i metodski živio godinu dana kao frontmen Doorsa, što nije bilo lako za izdržati njegovoj supruzi Joanne Whalley koju je upoznao na setu "Willowa" i sa njom snimio triler "Ubij me ponovno".

Snimke iz tog perioda jasno ukazuju koliko je tanka granica između (glumačkog) perfekcionista i egocentrika, a upravo će tu granicu Kilmer s vremenom prijeći, kad je dobio reputaciju arogantne zvijezde, od čega dokumentarac ne bježi.

Snimanje "Batman Forever" bilo mu je neugodno iskustvo zbog neudobnog kostima koji je kočio Kilmerov glumački izričaj (mogao glumiti samo ustima) i sveo ga na pozera iz sapunica, dok su pred njegovim očima negativci Jim Carrey i Tommy Lee Jones uspjeli ostvariti bolje uloge.

Zvijezda mu je počela tamniti kad je, u kratkom roku, odbio još jednom postati Čovjek-šišmiš u "Batmanu i Robinu" (mudra odluka), "The Saint" nije postao kinohit koliko se očekivalo, a njegova arogancija je raspojasala na kaotičnom setu "Otoka doktora Moreaua".

U jednom momentu slušamo Kilmerovo rječkanje s režiserom Johnom Frankenheimerom koje netko drugi ne bi ostavio u filmu, neovisno o tome što glumac pravda loše ponašanje činjenicom da mu se srce slomilo kad se njegov idol Marlon Brando odjavio sa snimanja i rijetko pojavljivao na setu, bivajući zamijenjen dublerima.

Dokumentarac je pun žaljenja i kajanja, posebice kad se u kadru nalazi današnji ranjivi Kilmer i potpisuje autograme da njima plati račune, ali i promiče osjećaj neodustajanja. Film u konačnici ima terapeutsku vrijednost za Kilmera i njegove fanove, a između redaka otkriva neke fundamentalne istine o životu. Otkriva što znači biti glumac i uopće čovjek sa svim vrlinama i manama, ljudsko biće.

Uloga Marka Twaina

Rak je Kilmera zatekao baš kad je postigao uspjeh ulogom Marka Twaina u "one-man showu" nazvanom "Citizen Twain". Kilmerov san je bio snimiti epski film o Twainu i odglumiti ga. San koji još sanja.

Pospremiti čitav život u dva sata filma često je nemoguća misija za redateljske biografe. Ipak, to je uspjelo poći za redateljskom rukom duetu Leo Scott-Ting Poo prilikom kroniciranja života poznatog hollywoodskog glumca Vala Kilmera. Biografski dokumentarac "Val" predstavlja nam Kilmera (r. 1959.) od malih nogu do danas.

Kilmerov život nam prolijeće pred očima kao što je njemu proletio, od djetinjstva kad je snimao filmiće s dvojicom braće, preko glumačkog uspona u osamdesetima i statusa velike zvijezde devedesetih, ali i problematičnog glumca, do zalaza karijere nakon borbe s rakom grla i gubitka glasa.

Ovo je rijetko intiman i dirljiv dokumentarni film, u isti mah tužan i životno afirmativan, istovremeno težak za gledanje i katarzičan. Intimnost ovakvog tipa je rijetka zato što su Scott i Poo dobili uvid u 40-ak godina Kilmerova života ovjekovječena videokamerom iz jedne dekade u drugu.

Film bi zasigurno bio manje dojmljiv da je klasični dokumentarac u kojem bi nas glumac u "talking head" maniri proveo kroz svoju filmografiju dočaranu foršpanima ili scenama iz filmova. Međutim, Kilmer je često držao upaljenu kameru i pasionirano snimao sličice iz svog života, koristeći svaku priliku za kadriranje sebe i (filmskog) svijeta oko sebe, na setovima u pauzama od snimanja itd.

Redateljima sigurno nije bilo lako odabrati/smontirati pozamašan materijal, ali uspjeli su pronaći mnoge zanimljive trenutke iz glumčeve prošlosti i ispresijecati ih s njegovom sadašnjosti. Kroz film nas kao narator vodi Jack Kilmer koji zvuči gotovo kao Val dok čita očeve memoare njegovim (izgubljenim) glasom, prenoseći glumčeve misli i osjećaje.

Jedna od prvih snimki s Kilmerove kamere jest zezacija na setu "Top Guna" s Rickom Rossovichem. Prije "Top Guna" Kilmer je glumio u parodiji "Top Secret", ali akcijski blockbuster s Tomom Cruiseom vinuo ga je prema zvijezdama i ovjekovječio njegovu prvu ikoničku ulogu – pilota Ledenog.

Interesantno je vidjeti Kilmerove početke na slavnom newyorškom Julliardu gdje je studirao glumu sa Seanom Pennom i Kevinom Baconom, ali i kolegicom iz "Top Guna" Kelly McGillis. Još interesantnije momente kad je na videovrpcu snimio svoju audiciju za "Dobre momke" i "Full Metal Jacket"; da uruči snimku Kubricku preletio je preko 9000 kilometara, no ulogu je kraju dobio Matthew Modine.

Audicija za "Full Metal Jacket", s tri različite intonacije, sugerirala je Kilmerov talent, ali i podcrtala njegovu buduću tragediju (gubitak glasa kao ključnog izražajnog sredstva glumca). Ubrzo, 1991., Kilmerov talent je eksplodirao izvedbom Jima Morrisona u filmu "The Doors", jednom od najboljih u devedesetima, nekim čudom nepozlaćenom barem nominacijom za Oscara, ako ne zlatnim kipićem.

Devedesete su bile Kilmerov glumački ("The Doors", "Legendarni Tombstone", "Vrućina") i zvjezdani vrhunac ("Batman zauvijek", "Svetac"). Tragajući za ulogama koje će ga "transformirati", on je doslovce postao Morrison i metodski živio godinu dana kao frontmen Doorsa, što nije bilo lako za izdržati njegovoj supruzi Joanne Whalley koju je upoznao na setu "Willowa" i sa njom snimio triler "Ubij me ponovno".

Snimke iz tog perioda jasno ukazuju koliko je tanka granica između (glumačkog) perfekcionista i egocentrika, a upravo će tu granicu Kilmer s vremenom prijeći, kad je dobio reputaciju arogantne zvijezde, od čega dokumentarac ne bježi.

Snimanje "Batman Forever" bilo mu je neugodno iskustvo zbog neudobnog kostima koji je kočio Kilmerov glumački izričaj (mogao glumiti samo ustima) i sveo ga na pozera iz sapunica, dok su pred njegovim očima negativci Jim Carrey i Tommy Lee Jones uspjeli ostvariti bolje uloge.

Zvijezda mu je počela tamniti kad je, u kratkom roku, odbio još jednom postati Čovjek-šišmiš u "Batmanu i Robinu" (mudra odluka), "The Saint" nije postao kinohit koliko se očekivalo, a njegova arogancija je raspojasala na kaotičnom setu "Otoka doktora Moreaua".

U jednom momentu slušamo Kilmerovo rječkanje s režiserom Johnom Frankenheimerom koje netko drugi ne bi ostavio u filmu, neovisno o tome što glumac pravda loše ponašanje činjenicom da mu se srce slomilo kad se njegov idol Marlon Brando odjavio sa snimanja i rijetko pojavljivao na setu, bivajući zamijenjen dublerima.

Dokumentarac je pun žaljenja i kajanja, posebice kad se u kadru nalazi današnji ranjivi Kilmer i potpisuje autograme da njima plati račune, ali i promiče osjećaj neodustajanja. Film u konačnici ima terapeutsku vrijednost za Kilmera i njegove fanove, a između redaka otkriva neke fundamentalne istine o životu. Otkriva što znači biti glumac i uopće čovjek sa svim vrlinama i manama, ljudsko biće.

Uloga Marka Twaina

Rak je Kilmera zatekao baš kad je postigao uspjeh ulogom Marka Twaina u "one-man showu" nazvanom "Citizen Twain". Kilmerov san je bio snimiti epski film o Twainu i odglumiti ga. San koji još sanja.
