Znanstvenike Sveučilišta u Bostonu kolege su osudile zbog igranja vatrom nakon što se pokazalo da su u laboratoriju stvorili novi smrtonosni soj Covida. Daily Mail je otkrio da je tim kombinirajući omikron i originalni wuhanski soj napravio hibridni virus koji je u studiji ubio 80 posto miševa.
Ovo otkriće pokazuje da se opasna istraživanja o manipulaciji virusima nastavljaju odvijati čak i u SAD-u, unatoč strahovima da su slične prakse možda pokrenule pandemiju.
- Ovo bi trebalo biti potpuno zabranjeno, to je igranje s vatrom, kazao je profesor Shmuel Shapira, vodeći znanstvenik u izraelskoj vladi. Ova praksa manipuliranja virusima u SAD-u je uvelike ograničena 2017. godine.

Smrtnost je visoka
Novo istraživanje nije recenzirano od strane kolega i stručnjaka, ali zasad je jasno kako je tim istraživača iz Bostona i Floride izdvojio omikronom protein koji je uvijek bio prisutan u virusu, ali se s vremenom sve više razvijao tako da se veže na ljudske stanice i napada ih. Omikron ima desetke takvih mutacija zbog čega je toliko zarazan, a istraživači su ga dodali izvornom soju koji se prvi put pojavio u Wuhanu na početku pandemije.
Istraživači su promatrali miševe zaražene novim hibridnim sojem i uspoređivali ih s onima zaraženim originalnim omikronom. Oni zaraženi originalnim virusom su svi preživjeli i imali blage simptome.

- Kod miševa, omikron uzrokuje blagu, nesmrtonosnu infekciju, dok virus koji nosi Omicron S (hibridni soj) uzrokuje tešku bolest sa stopom smrtnosti od 80 posto, stoji u radu znanstvenika koji su dodali kako to signalizira da iako je upravo taj protein odgovoran za infektivnost, promjene u drugim dijelovima njegove strukture određuju njegovu smrtonosnost.

Znanstvenike Sveučilišta u Bostonu kolege su osudile zbog igranja vatrom nakon što se pokazalo da su u laboratoriju stvorili novi smrtonosni soj Covida. Daily Mail je otkrio da je tim kombinirajući omikron i originalni wuhanski soj napravio hibridni virus koji je u studiji ubio 80 posto miševa.
Ovo otkriće pokazuje da se opasna istraživanja o manipulaciji virusima nastavljaju odvijati čak i u SAD-u, unatoč strahovima da su slične prakse možda pokrenule pandemiju.
- Ovo bi trebalo biti potpuno zabranjeno, to je igranje s vatrom, kazao je profesor Shmuel Shapira, vodeći znanstvenik u izraelskoj vladi. Ova praksa manipuliranja virusima u SAD-u je uvelike ograničena 2017. godine.
- Ovo istraživanje je jasan primjer istraživanja funkcija. Želimo li izbjeći sljedeću pandemiju generiranu u laboratoriju, imperativ je pojačati nadzor istraživanja potencijalnih patogena pandemije, rekao je doktor Richard Ebright, kemičar sa Sveučilišta Rutgers u New Brunswicku u New Jerseyu.

Smrtnost je visoka
Novo istraživanje nije recenzirano od strane kolega i stručnjaka, ali zasad je jasno kako je tim istraživača iz Bostona i Floride izdvojio omikronom protein koji je uvijek bio prisutan u virusu, ali se s vremenom sve više razvijao tako da se veže na ljudske stanice i napada ih. Omikron ima desetke takvih mutacija zbog čega je toliko zarazan, a istraživači su ga dodali izvornom soju koji se prvi put pojavio u Wuhanu na početku pandemije.
Istraživači su promatrali miševe zaražene novim hibridnim sojem i uspoređivali ih s onima zaraženim originalnim omikronom. Oni zaraženi originalnim virusom su svi preživjeli i imali blage simptome.

- Kod miševa, omikron uzrokuje blagu, nesmrtonosnu infekciju, dok virus koji nosi Omicron S (hibridni soj) uzrokuje tešku bolest sa stopom smrtnosti od 80 posto, stoji u radu znanstvenika koji su dodali kako to signalizira da iako je upravo taj protein odgovoran za infektivnost, promjene u drugim dijelovima njegove strukture određuju njegovu smrtonosnost.

Posebno je zabrinjavajuće što se čini da ovo novo ePPP istraživanje američke vlade - poput prethodnog ePPP istraživanja američke vlade o koronavirusima povezanim sa SARS-om na Institutu za virologiju Wuhan koji su možda uzrokovali pandemiju - nije prošlo prethodni odnos rizika i koristi pregled naložen prema zahtjevima američke vlade. Ako želimo izbjeći sljedeću pandemiju generiranu u laboratoriju, imperativ je pojačati nadzor nad istraživanjem ePPP-a. Važno je da se postojeća pravila koja nalažu prethodnu procjenu rizika i koristi od istraživanja ePPP-a slijede, a imperativ je da dužnosnici američkih vladinih agencija koji su opetovano izlagali javnost opasnosti opetovanim kršenjem postojećih pravila budu pozvani na odgovornost, rekao je doktor Ebright.
