“Šta ne razumiš?”, upitao bi tako otresito da je vama bilo neugodno, da biste se pokajali što ste ga pitali zašto dupin iskače iz haube Citroëna, otkud psu dalmatincu pegla umjesto glave i što uopće u njegovim slikama traže sve one kokoši, kosturi, parobrodi, cepelini, trube, hobotnice i čekići?

Bio je nevjerojatna osoba. Zapanjujućom je crtačkom vještinom stvarao čudnovate, enigmatične prizore, upisujući u njih mnoštvo značenja, pozivajući se katkad na nešto vrlo osobno, što niste mogli znati jer je postojalo samo u njegovoj glavi, jer je on to sanjao, i u isto se vrijeme ljutio što ste takva neznalica i cukun da ne kontate što je on htio reći. Napokon ste ga sasvim prestali pitati, ili se žaliti da njegov izraz nije jednostavniji, izravniji, razumljiviji, piše Ante Tomić za Jutarnji. 

Jer ste, Bogu hvala, napokon shvatili. Alem Ćurin, novinski ilustrator, strip crtač, autor kazališnih plakata i književnih naslovnica, bio je totalni umjetnik. Jedan od rijetkih, nepotkupljivih, koji ustraje na svome i ne žudi da jednostavnim, izravnijim i razumljivijim slikama dopire do mnogih. Nama slabićima koji se besramno ulizujemo publici, koji se prostim porukama dodvoravamo svjetini, njegova je tvrdoglavost bila i zadivljujuća i šašava.

Ima o njemu jedna priča koju mi, njegovi prijatelji utorkaši, često i rado pričamo. Prije dvadeset, dvadeset pet godina po prilici poželio je napokon zaraditi na svome talentu, napraviti poštovanja vrijednu međunarodnu karijeru pa je ogledno nacrtao pet stranica komercijalnog stripa o Zagoru, svima omiljenom Duhu sa sjekirom, junaku naših djetinjstava. Pokazao ih je Ivici Ivaniševiću i meni i mi smo ostali paf.

Na četiri stranice bio je to, bez konkurencije, najbolji Zagor kojega smo ikad vidjeli, a sumnjamo da je Sergio Bonelli, koji je Zagora izmislio, vidio mnogo boljih. Zagorovo lice, mišići, pokreti, skokovi, let njegove kamene sjekire, hitac iz pištolja, močvara i drveće, sve je bilo savršeno. Dok nismo na petoj stranici ugledali Zagora i njegovog vjernog prijatelja Čika kako se kupaju ispod slapa, goli kao od majke rođeni.

Uzaludno je i Ivici i meni bilo govoriti da to ne može, da bi Bonelli prije umro nego objavio tako nešto. Ako su se u Alemovoj autorskoj viziji Zagor i Čiko kupali goli, Alem nije mogao lagati i nacrtati im kupaće gaće. To bi bila izdaja njegovih ljudskih i umjetničkih načela. Niste ga mogli ne voljeti zbog te nepopustljivosti, premda ste znali da će mu zbog nje poštovanja vrijedna međunarodna karijera strip crtača na kraju zacijelo ipak izmaći.

Nije postao ni bogat ni slavan kako je mogao sa svojim talentom, ali to valjda s totalnim umjetnicima i ne može drugačije. Svojim je djelom svejedno dotakao mnoga srca, imao je obožavatelje koliko god se trudio da ih otjera. Dvojica su mlađih nedavno tako uvećala na jednom splitskom zidu jedan njegov genijalni kazališni plakat. Ostavio je zamašno djelo za sobom, stotine i stotine novinskih ilustracija, većinom u Feralu i Novostima, novinama izvan glavne matice, svojeglavima i nepopustljivima kao i on sam što je bio. Kojiput je i njihove urednike znao šokirati kakvim okrutnim prizorom ili golotinjom. Ovo drugo bio mu je osobiti merak. Nema vjerojatno našeg umjetnika koji je nacrtao više aktova od Alema Ćurina. Ili, ako i ima, nigdje tijela nisu bila istinitija i čulnija nego u njega, s njegovim se golim ženama mogu možda usporediti samo gole žene u stripovima velikog Mila Manare.

Znao je biti zaguljen, kompliciran, težak i grub, i biti pošten, odan, velikodušan i drag, sve u isto vrijeme. I na kraju nas je zatekao više nego ijedna njegova slika. Njegov je odlazak neshvatljiv kao neki čudni košmar.

“Šta ne razumiš?”, upitao bi tako otresito da je vama bilo neugodno, da biste se pokajali što ste ga pitali zašto dupin iskače iz haube Citroëna, otkud psu dalmatincu pegla umjesto glave i što uopće u njegovim slikama traže sve one kokoši, kosturi, parobrodi, cepelini, trube, hobotnice i čekići?

Bio je nevjerojatna osoba. Zapanjujućom je crtačkom vještinom stvarao čudnovate, enigmatične prizore, upisujući u njih mnoštvo značenja, pozivajući se katkad na nešto vrlo osobno, što niste mogli znati jer je postojalo samo u njegovoj glavi, jer je on to sanjao, i u isto se vrijeme ljutio što ste takva neznalica i cukun da ne kontate što je on htio reći. Napokon ste ga sasvim prestali pitati, ili se žaliti da njegov izraz nije jednostavniji, izravniji, razumljiviji, piše Ante Tomić za Jutarnji. 

Jer ste, Bogu hvala, napokon shvatili. Alem Ćurin, novinski ilustrator, strip crtač, autor kazališnih plakata i književnih naslovnica, bio je totalni umjetnik. Jedan od rijetkih, nepotkupljivih, koji ustraje na svome i ne žudi da jednostavnim, izravnijim i razumljivijim slikama dopire do mnogih. Nama slabićima koji se besramno ulizujemo publici, koji se prostim porukama dodvoravamo svjetini, njegova je tvrdoglavost bila i zadivljujuća i šašava.

Ima o njemu jedna priča koju mi, njegovi prijatelji utorkaši, često i rado pričamo. Prije dvadeset, dvadeset pet godina po prilici poželio je napokon zaraditi na svome talentu, napraviti poštovanja vrijednu međunarodnu karijeru pa je ogledno nacrtao pet stranica komercijalnog stripa o Zagoru, svima omiljenom Duhu sa sjekirom, junaku naših djetinjstava. Pokazao ih je Ivici Ivaniševiću i meni i mi smo ostali paf.

Na četiri stranice bio je to, bez konkurencije, najbolji Zagor kojega smo ikad vidjeli, a sumnjamo da je Sergio Bonelli, koji je Zagora izmislio, vidio mnogo boljih. Zagorovo lice, mišići, pokreti, skokovi, let njegove kamene sjekire, hitac iz pištolja, močvara i drveće, sve je bilo savršeno. Dok nismo na petoj stranici ugledali Zagora i njegovog vjernog prijatelja Čika kako se kupaju ispod slapa, goli kao od majke rođeni.

Uzaludno je i Ivici i meni bilo govoriti da to ne može, da bi Bonelli prije umro nego objavio tako nešto. Ako su se u Alemovoj autorskoj viziji Zagor i Čiko kupali goli, Alem nije mogao lagati i nacrtati im kupaće gaće. To bi bila izdaja njegovih ljudskih i umjetničkih načela. Niste ga mogli ne voljeti zbog te nepopustljivosti, premda ste znali da će mu zbog nje poštovanja vrijedna međunarodna karijera strip crtača na kraju zacijelo ipak izmaći.

Nije postao ni bogat ni slavan kako je mogao sa svojim talentom, ali to valjda s totalnim umjetnicima i ne može drugačije. Svojim je djelom svejedno dotakao mnoga srca, imao je obožavatelje koliko god se trudio da ih otjera. Dvojica su mlađih nedavno tako uvećala na jednom splitskom zidu jedan njegov genijalni kazališni plakat. Ostavio je zamašno djelo za sobom, stotine i stotine novinskih ilustracija, većinom u Feralu i Novostima, novinama izvan glavne matice, svojeglavima i nepopustljivima kao i on sam što je bio. Kojiput je i njihove urednike znao šokirati kakvim okrutnim prizorom ili golotinjom. Ovo drugo bio mu je osobiti merak. Nema vjerojatno našeg umjetnika koji je nacrtao više aktova od Alema Ćurina. Ili, ako i ima, nigdje tijela nisu bila istinitija i čulnija nego u njega, s njegovim se golim ženama mogu možda usporediti samo gole žene u stripovima velikog Mila Manare.

Znao je biti zaguljen, kompliciran, težak i grub, i biti pošten, odan, velikodušan i drag, sve u isto vrijeme. I na kraju nas je zatekao više nego ijedna njegova slika. Njegov je odlazak neshvatljiv kao neki čudni košmar.
