Kao da je znao da snima film koji će se natjecati za Oscara, Joseph L. Mankiewicz otvara "Sve o Evi" (1950.) scenom sa svečane dodjele nagrada. Nije bitno što se radi o kazališnim, a ne filmskim nagradama. "All About Eve" ionako prelama kazališni i filmski svijet, Broadway i Hollywood, svodeći ih na zajednički nazivnik. Bitnije je Mankiewiczovo metafilmsko vizionarstvo.

"Sve o Evi" je bio film s dodjele Oscara 1951. o kojem se najviše govorilo. Osvojio je rekordnih 14 oskarovskih nominacija, što je tek 1997. izjednačio Cameronov "Titanic", a potvrdio njih šest, uključujući najbolji film, Makniewiczovu režiju i scenarij, te sporednu mušku ulogu Georgea Sandersa.

Bez Oscara za glavnu žensku ulogu, jednu od najimpresivnijih u povijesti, nepravedno je ostala neponovljiva Bette Davis za izvedbu veteranske kazališne glumice Margo Channing; zlatni kipić joj je preotela 13 godina mlađa Judy Holliday za "Born Yesterday".

Pa ipak, tu se također reflektira vizionarska metafilmičnost remek-djela "Sve o Evi". Jer, na dodjeli kazališnih nagrada trijumfirala je glumica mlađa od Margo – Eve Harrington u tumačenju Anne Baxter, također nominirane za Oscara u kategoriji glavne ženske uloge i, uzgred, Hollidayičine približne vršnjakinje.

Zašto je naglasak na Mankiwiczovu vizionarstvu? Zato što će Mankiewicza rijetko tko spomenuti u istoj rečenici s, primjerice, redateljskim vizionarom Orsonom Wellesom. Odnosno, hoće, ali samo kao poveznicu s "Građaninom Kaneom" za koji je scenarij napisao njegov brat Herman J. Mankiewicz, o kome je David Fincher snimio film "Mank".

Mankiewicz, istina, nije zadužio režiju i kinematografiju na jednak način kao Welles, ispisavši neka nova pravila iza kamere, ali ne zaslužuje ni biti podcijenjen kao redatelj neovisno o tome što je radio i "Kleopatru", ako je već cjenjeniji u ulozi scenarista. Njegova režija u "All About Eve" je nevidljiva, tradicionalna i nerazmetljiva, u službi scenarija i glumaca, ne obratno.

Nema tu nekih vožnji kamere koje upadaju u oko, no tko drži otvorene oči trebao bi se složiti da nitko dotad (pa i otad osim njega samoga) nije ovako premostio filmsku i kazališnu režiju kao Mankiewicz režirajući na zlatnoj sredini između kinematografije i teatra.

Netko bi mogao zamijeniti "Sve o Evi" za filmovanje kazališne predstave, ali sve i da "All Abut Eve" to jest, imalo bi smisla za metafilm o teatru, preteču "Birdmana" Alejandra G. Inarritua. No, Mankiewicz je kazalište prebacio u film. Pojedine scene završavaju tako da se svjetlo priguši ili čak ugasi, kao da je gotov čin i samo nedostaje da se zastor spusti.

Kvaka je, međutim, da Mankiewicz drži zastor visoko podignut čak i kad scena završi, tj. odvodi gledatelja iza pozornice "off stage", ravno među glumce koji glume i kad ne glume, dopuštajući gledateljima da uđu u njihov svijet, kao što je ušla Eve, te im se približi do krupnog plana, kakvom tijekom kazališne predstave mogu prići samo s dalekozorom u ruci, ali teško da će on biti ovako filmičan.

To se moglo naslutiti u uvodnoj sceni, kad cinični kazališni kritičar i komentator Addison DeWitt (Sanders) otkriva gledatelju "gdje je i zašto je ovdje" i predstavlja likove filma, od Margo do Eve o kojoj ćemo više kasnije doznati, zapravo "sve", kako i naslov sugerira.

Zanimljivo je da se DeWittova naracija štafetno predaje naraciji Karen (Celeste Holm, nominirana za sporednu ulogu), ženi dramatičara Lloyda Richarda (Hugh Marlowe) i Margoinoj prijateljici koja će pustiti Evu u njezin "backstage" i priču tada gledamo njezinim očima.

Ovakva naracija, mini-rašomon iz iste godine kad je Kurosawa i snimio "Rašomon", nije bila svojstvena filmovima "zlatnog doba" Hollywooda, a Mankiewicz ju je režijski elegantno i sofisticirano preselio na ekran i dijelio među likovima/glumcima iz kojih je izvukao ono najbolje.

Režija glumaca je ovdje na vrhunskoj razini, kao i sama gluma. Prednjači, dakako, Davis u ulozi karijere. Reći će netko, lako je režirati takvu glumicu, ali to baš i nije tako. Billy Wilder je bolji redatelj od Mankiewicza, no nije uspio zauzdati Gloriju Swanson u sličnoj ulozi ostarjele zvijezde u "Bulevaru sumraka".

Swanson je na rubu karikature, ali ne i realističnija Davis kojoj je Mankiewicz napisao rečenicu za anale "Fasten your seatbelts. It's gonna be a bumpy night..." ("Vežite pojaseve, bit će grbava noć...") koja se citira možda i više od "I am big. It's the pictures that got small..." ("Ja sam velika. Filmovi su ti koji su se smanjili...").

Davis osjeća ulogu od glave do pete, pije, puši i glumi bez dlake na jeziku, časteći producente, muškarce, svakoga oko sebe, a kad šuti, njezine oči, opjevane u pjesmi Kim Carnes "Bette Davis Eyes" iz osamdesetih, govore tisući riječi u koloru, neovisno o tome što je film crno-bijeli.

U očima Bette Davis je cijeli film, naročito scena proslave Margoina 40. rođendana, odigrana za glumačko anale. To je emotivni "tour de force" u kojem se miješa ponos i depresija, a Davisičin/Margoin gorki cinizam je gorči od "gina" kao preslik njezina osjećaja da je neželjena, nesigurna, nevoljena, danas napose opipljivog u "age obsession" dobu, kad glumice iznad 40 postaju "stare".

S takvom silom prirode, "masom glazbe i vatre", Baxter se ne može mjeriti, ali Marilyn Monroe je maksimalno iskoristila minimalnu minutažu u ulozi starlete Claudije Caswell, zamalo i ukrala scenu kad kaže da producenti "uvijek izgledaju kao nesretni zečevi" i zagleda se u kaput od krzna samura ("sable") zbog kojeg se vrijedi žrtvovati, tj. spavati s ružnim producentom Maxom Fabianom (Gregory Ratoff).

"Je li rekla sable ili Gable?", pita se DeWitt. "Bilo koji od njih", odgovori ona. Monroe je tu pokazala konture Merlinke kakvu znamo iz kasnijih hitova, od "Sedam godina vjernosti" nadalje, za što je isto zaslužan Mankiewicz koji je sa "Sve o Evi" postavio "template" za filmove o rivalstvu dviju žena, mlađe i starije, mlade nade u usponu i zvijezde na zalasku karijere u pojedinom poslu ("Persona", "Showgirls", "Crni labud"...), ali i idolatriji, fanatizmu i lažnoj iskrenosti.

Eve ulazi u kazališnu džunglu kao "janje" i ubrzo otkriva skriveno lice predatorice kad se ispostavlja da ona ne želi raditi za idoliziranu Margo kao tajnica, niti biti njezina štićenica, nego je zamijeniti i postati glumica. "Pitala bi Abbota da joj da ulogu Costella", sigurna je Margo.

Nema sumnje, Eve bi dala sve za ulogu i njezin je cilj da je vole stotine različitih ljudi svake večeri i aplaudiraju joj (pljesak je usporedila s valovima ljubavi; "samo to je vrijedno svega"). Cilj koji opravdava sredstvo (zabiti nož u leđa Margo).

Zabijanje noža u leđa nije hororsko-trilerski doslovno, ali nije čudno da DeWitt u Eve vidi "ubojicu" pa je prirodno da je poslužila kao inspiracija za buduće likove sociopatkinja i manipulatorica iz trilera kao što je npr. "Oglas donosi smrt" koje će proučavati svoje uzore, isprobavati njihove haljine i pokušavati im preoteti zaručnike.

Završni kadar filma je vizionarski po pitanju smjene generacija, kad se zastor spusti i opet digne. Mlada žena (Barbara Bates) pokuca na Eveina vrata kao neka nova Eve i zatim pozira ispred zida zrcala držeći njezinu nagradu za najbolju glumicu, s višestrukim odrazom u ogledalu. Sve Eve ovoga svijeta zrcale se u finalu "All About Eve".

Kao da je znao da snima film koji će se natjecati za Oscara, Joseph L. Mankiewicz otvara "Sve o Evi" (1950.) scenom sa svečane dodjele nagrada. Nije bitno što se radi o kazališnim, a ne filmskim nagradama. "All About Eve" ionako prelama kazališni i filmski svijet, Broadway i Hollywood, svodeći ih na zajednički nazivnik. Bitnije je Mankiewiczovo metafilmsko vizionarstvo.

"Sve o Evi" je bio film s dodjele Oscara 1951. o kojem se najviše govorilo. Osvojio je rekordnih 14 oskarovskih nominacija, što je tek 1997. izjednačio Cameronov "Titanic", a potvrdio njih šest, uključujući najbolji film, Makniewiczovu režiju i scenarij, te sporednu mušku ulogu Georgea Sandersa.

Bez Oscara za glavnu žensku ulogu, jednu od najimpresivnijih u povijesti, nepravedno je ostala neponovljiva Bette Davis za izvedbu veteranske kazališne glumice Margo Channing; zlatni kipić joj je preotela 13 godina mlađa Judy Holliday za "Born Yesterday".

Pa ipak, tu se također reflektira vizionarska metafilmičnost remek-djela "Sve o Evi". Jer, na dodjeli kazališnih nagrada trijumfirala je glumica mlađa od Margo – Eve Harrington u tumačenju Anne Baxter, također nominirane za Oscara u kategoriji glavne ženske uloge i, uzgred, Hollidayičine približne vršnjakinje.

Zašto je naglasak na Mankiwiczovu vizionarstvu? Zato što će Mankiewicza rijetko tko spomenuti u istoj rečenici s, primjerice, redateljskim vizionarom Orsonom Wellesom. Odnosno, hoće, ali samo kao poveznicu s "Građaninom Kaneom" za koji je scenarij napisao njegov brat Herman J. Mankiewicz, o kome je David Fincher snimio film "Mank".

Mankiewicz, istina, nije zadužio režiju i kinematografiju na jednak način kao Welles, ispisavši neka nova pravila iza kamere, ali ne zaslužuje ni biti podcijenjen kao redatelj neovisno o tome što je radio i "Kleopatru", ako je već cjenjeniji u ulozi scenarista. Njegova režija u "All About Eve" je nevidljiva, tradicionalna i nerazmetljiva, u službi scenarija i glumaca, ne obratno.

Nema tu nekih vožnji kamere koje upadaju u oko, no tko drži otvorene oči trebao bi se složiti da nitko dotad (pa i otad osim njega samoga) nije ovako premostio filmsku i kazališnu režiju kao Mankiewicz režirajući na zlatnoj sredini između kinematografije i teatra.

Netko bi mogao zamijeniti "Sve o Evi" za filmovanje kazališne predstave, ali sve i da "All Abut Eve" to jest, imalo bi smisla za metafilm o teatru, preteču "Birdmana" Alejandra G. Inarritua. No, Mankiewicz je kazalište prebacio u film. Pojedine scene završavaju tako da se svjetlo priguši ili čak ugasi, kao da je gotov čin i samo nedostaje da se zastor spusti.

Kvaka je, međutim, da Mankiewicz drži zastor visoko podignut čak i kad scena završi, tj. odvodi gledatelja iza pozornice "off stage", ravno među glumce koji glume i kad ne glume, dopuštajući gledateljima da uđu u njihov svijet, kao što je ušla Eve, te im se približi do krupnog plana, kakvom tijekom kazališne predstave mogu prići samo s dalekozorom u ruci, ali teško da će on biti ovako filmičan.

To se moglo naslutiti u uvodnoj sceni, kad cinični kazališni kritičar i komentator Addison DeWitt (Sanders) otkriva gledatelju "gdje je i zašto je ovdje" i predstavlja likove filma, od Margo do Eve o kojoj ćemo više kasnije doznati, zapravo "sve", kako i naslov sugerira.

Zanimljivo je da se DeWittova naracija štafetno predaje naraciji Karen (Celeste Holm, nominirana za sporednu ulogu), ženi dramatičara Lloyda Richarda (Hugh Marlowe) i Margoinoj prijateljici koja će pustiti Evu u njezin "backstage" i priču tada gledamo njezinim očima.

Ovakva naracija, mini-rašomon iz iste godine kad je Kurosawa i snimio "Rašomon", nije bila svojstvena filmovima "zlatnog doba" Hollywooda, a Mankiewicz ju je režijski elegantno i sofisticirano preselio na ekran i dijelio među likovima/glumcima iz kojih je izvukao ono najbolje.

Režija glumaca je ovdje na vrhunskoj razini, kao i sama gluma. Prednjači, dakako, Davis u ulozi karijere. Reći će netko, lako je režirati takvu glumicu, ali to baš i nije tako. Billy Wilder je bolji redatelj od Mankiewicza, no nije uspio zauzdati Gloriju Swanson u sličnoj ulozi ostarjele zvijezde u "Bulevaru sumraka".

Swanson je na rubu karikature, ali ne i realističnija Davis kojoj je Mankiewicz napisao rečenicu za anale "Fasten your seatbelts. It's gonna be a bumpy night..." ("Vežite pojaseve, bit će grbava noć...") koja se citira možda i više od "I am big. It's the pictures that got small..." ("Ja sam velika. Filmovi su ti koji su se smanjili...").

Davis osjeća ulogu od glave do pete, pije, puši i glumi bez dlake na jeziku, časteći producente, muškarce, svakoga oko sebe, a kad šuti, njezine oči, opjevane u pjesmi Kim Carnes "Bette Davis Eyes" iz osamdesetih, govore tisući riječi u koloru, neovisno o tome što je film crno-bijeli.

U očima Bette Davis je cijeli film, naročito scena proslave Margoina 40. rođendana, odigrana za glumačko anale. To je emotivni "tour de force" u kojem se miješa ponos i depresija, a Davisičin/Margoin gorki cinizam je gorči od "gina" kao preslik njezina osjećaja da je neželjena, nesigurna, nevoljena, danas napose opipljivog u "age obsession" dobu, kad glumice iznad 40 postaju "stare".

S takvom silom prirode, "masom glazbe i vatre", Baxter se ne može mjeriti, ali Marilyn Monroe je maksimalno iskoristila minimalnu minutažu u ulozi starlete Claudije Caswell, zamalo i ukrala scenu kad kaže da producenti "uvijek izgledaju kao nesretni zečevi" i zagleda se u kaput od krzna samura ("sable") zbog kojeg se vrijedi žrtvovati, tj. spavati s ružnim producentom Maxom Fabianom (Gregory Ratoff).

"Je li rekla sable ili Gable?", pita se DeWitt. "Bilo koji od njih", odgovori ona. Monroe je tu pokazala konture Merlinke kakvu znamo iz kasnijih hitova, od "Sedam godina vjernosti" nadalje, za što je isto zaslužan Mankiewicz koji je sa "Sve o Evi" postavio "template" za filmove o rivalstvu dviju žena, mlađe i starije, mlade nade u usponu i zvijezde na zalasku karijere u pojedinom poslu ("Persona", "Showgirls", "Crni labud"...), ali i idolatriji, fanatizmu i lažnoj iskrenosti.

Eve ulazi u kazališnu džunglu kao "janje" i ubrzo otkriva skriveno lice predatorice kad se ispostavlja da ona ne želi raditi za idoliziranu Margo kao tajnica, niti biti njezina štićenica, nego je zamijeniti i postati glumica. "Pitala bi Abbota da joj da ulogu Costella", sigurna je Margo.

Nema sumnje, Eve bi dala sve za ulogu i njezin je cilj da je vole stotine različitih ljudi svake večeri i aplaudiraju joj (pljesak je usporedila s valovima ljubavi; "samo to je vrijedno svega"). Cilj koji opravdava sredstvo (zabiti nož u leđa Margo).

Zabijanje noža u leđa nije hororsko-trilerski doslovno, ali nije čudno da DeWitt u Eve vidi "ubojicu" pa je prirodno da je poslužila kao inspiracija za buduće likove sociopatkinja i manipulatorica iz trilera kao što je npr. "Oglas donosi smrt" koje će proučavati svoje uzore, isprobavati njihove haljine i pokušavati im preoteti zaručnike.

Završni kadar filma je vizionarski po pitanju smjene generacija, kad se zastor spusti i opet digne. Mlada žena (Barbara Bates) pokuca na Eveina vrata kao neka nova Eve i zatim pozira ispred zida zrcala držeći njezinu nagradu za najbolju glumicu, s višestrukim odrazom u ogledalu. Sve Eve ovoga svijeta zrcale se u finalu "All About Eve".

‘Sve o Evi‘: Oči Bette Davis

Kao da je znao da snima film koji će se natjecati za Oscara, Joseph L. Mankiewicz otvara "Sve o Evi" (1950.) scenom sa svečane dodjele nagrada. Nije bitno što se radi o kazališnim, a ne filmskim nagradama. "All About Eve" ionako prelama kazališni i filmski svijet, Broadway i Hollywood, svodeći ih na zajednički nazivnik. Bitnije je Mankiewiczovo metafilmsko vizionarstvo.

"Sve o Evi" je bio film s dodjele Oscara 1951. o kojem se najviše govorilo. Osvojio je rekordnih 14 oskarovskih nominacija, što je tek 1997. izjednačio Cameronov "Titanic", a potvrdio njih šest, uključujući najbolji film, Makniewiczovu režiju i scenarij, te sporednu mušku ulogu Georgea Sandersa.

Bez Oscara za glavnu žensku ulogu, jednu od najimpresivnijih u povijesti, nepravedno je ostala neponovljiva...
