Ne samo jedna, već četiri popkulturne ikone nalaze se u centru filma "One Night In Miami" – boksač Muhammad Ali, aktivist za ljudska prava Malcolm X, igrač američkog nogometa Jim Brown i pjevač Sam Cooke. A o svakome od njih doznajemo jednako ili više nego što ponekad doznamo o nekome u pojedinačnom biografskom filmu ili seriji.

Veliki je to kompliment za ekonomični, ali efektni dugometražni redateljski prvijenac oskarovske glumice Regine King koji će joj, potencijalno, omogućiti Oscar nominaciju za režiju, a vrlo vjerojatno se naći u utrci za najbolji film. "Jedna noć u Miamiju" je znatno bolja od njegovog mogućeg oskarovskog konkurenta "Ma Rainey: Majka bluesa" s kojim dijeli kazališne korijene, prostorno-vremensku svedenost i likove iz stvarnog života.

Oba filma se odvijaju u približno realnom vremenu na jednoj lokaciji i počivaju na dijalozima i monolozima, a nastala su prema kazališnim komadima inspiriranim pravim, dobro znanim ljudima crne boje kože. No, dok "Ma Rainey" znade biti i teatralan kad u kadru nije sjajni Chadwick Boseman, a svakako je film vidljivog teatarskog podrijetla, "One Night In Miami" uspijeva zamaskirati kazalištarnost i nametnuti se kao životniji, ako ne i filmičniji komad angažirane karakterne i društvene drame.

Pred Reginom i njezinim glumcima nalazio se teži zadatak da izađu iz sjene istoimene predstave scenarista Kempa Powersa, ali i važnih figura iz života i filma. Južnjačka pjevačica Gertrude "Ma" Rainey nije ni blizu toliko poznata kao Ali, Malcolm X, Brown i Cooke, niti je imala filmske inkarnacije, kao što jesu neki od njih.

Will Smith je, recimo, glumio Alija, Denzel Washington, pak, Malcolma X-a, a obojica su, k tome, osvojili i nominaciju za Oscara za uloge u filmovima Michaela Manna i Spikea Leeja. Kingsley Ben-Adir i Eli Goree su veoma dojmljivi kao Malcolm X i Ali, tj. Cassius Clay, glumeći bez teškog tereta Washingtonovih i Smithovih izvedbi, a jednako su dobri i Aldis Hodge i Leslie Odom Jr. u ulogama Browna i Cookea.

Iako prednjače Ben-Adir i Odom Jr., teško je nekoga izdvojiti od pokera dobrih glumaca koji su udahnuli život legendama i jedna uloga je nemoguća bez druge, treće i četvrte, stoga bi bilo najpoštenije da nastave dobivati kolektivne nominacije i nagrade za glumački ansambl, odnosno konkurirati "Čikaškoj sedmorki".

Bez glumaca ne bi bilo "Jedne noći u Miamiju", a redateljica ih suvereno usmjerava kroz film kad treba i pušta na miru da sami oblikuju likove i sažive s njima na licu mjesta, ovisno o međusobnoj interakciji, što rezultira osjećajem spontanosti i životnosti, ne samo "štreberskim" recitiranjem teksta iz Powersova pera.

King se trudi načiniti film filmičnijim s prologom koji predstavlja glavne likove u različitim situacijama, nerijetko i eksterijerima, no "One Night In Miami" će prodisati punim plućima kad se stacionira u miamijskom hotelu gdje Brown, Malcolm X i Cooke dolaze proslaviti Cassiusovu frišku titulu prvaka svijeta u teškoj kategoriji, nakon što je pobijedio Sonnyja Listona, a netom prije nego što će službeno preuzeti ime Ali.

Interijeri više odgovaraju filmu baveći se internim razmišljanjima likova u ključnim trenucima njihovih života, kad se svaki od njih nalazi na ovom ili onom raskrižju ili na putovanju koje je "drukčije za svakog od nas", kako kaže Malcolm X. Clay postaje Ali, Brown je zakoračio u svijet filma...

Preko njih se prelama Amerika koja je sredinom šezdesetih također bila na raskrižju (godina je 1964.). Rasizam buja na sve strane, što je evidentno u uvodnoj sceni s Brownom i starim bijelcem (Beau Bridges) koji se divi popularnom sportašu, ali ga odbija pustiti u kuću; "crncima tu nije mjesto".

Zalomi se filmu poneka prenaglašena politička poruka, jer nije sve "crno i bijelo" kako tvrdi Malcolm X koji na prijatelje gleda kao na "oružja" u borbi za živote ("crnci doslovno umiru na ulici") i prigovara Cookeu što nije dovoljno aktivistički nastrojen kao pjevač, tj. glas naroda, puštajući pjesmu "Blowing in the Wind" i ističući da je bijeli Bob Dylan veći aktivist od njega.

Prava istina je sukus svih njihovih stavova, ne samo Malcolmovog "poziva za buđenje" kojim je trgnuo ostale pa i Cookea, skorog autora himničke pjesme "A Change Is Gonna Come". Međutim, većina onoga što su rekli u filmu, izgovarajući zamišljene riječi iz scenarija, lako je zamislivo da su izgovorili u stvarnosti te noći, nedugo prije nego što su ostavili vidljiv trag za sobom, svaki u svojoj domeni.

Malcolm X i Cooke su umrli u manje od godinu dana nakon ove noći u Miamiju, i to daje na dirljivosti priče o okupljanju četvorke koju King tretira prvenstveno kao ljude, a ne hodajuće političke parole. Takav je i film, najprije ljudski pa tek onda politički, koliko god njegova politika danas odzvanjala relevantnošću (George Floyd), opjevana stihovima "A Change Is Gonna Come". Stihovima o promjeni koja se nije još obistinila.

Regina King kao redateljica

Regina King je redateljsku praksu stekla režijom pojedinih epizoda serija, poput "This Is Us", "Animal Kingdom", "The Good Doctor"..., a potpisala je i jedan TV film i dokumentarac ("The Finest", "Story Of Village").

Ne samo jedna, već četiri popkulturne ikone nalaze se u centru filma "One Night In Miami" – boksač Muhammad Ali, aktivist za ljudska prava Malcolm X, igrač američkog nogometa Jim Brown i pjevač Sam Cooke. A o svakome od njih doznajemo jednako ili više nego što ponekad doznamo o nekome u pojedinačnom biografskom filmu ili seriji.

Veliki je to kompliment za ekonomični, ali efektni dugometražni redateljski prvijenac oskarovske glumice Regine King koji će joj, potencijalno, omogućiti Oscar nominaciju za režiju, a vrlo vjerojatno se naći u utrci za najbolji film. "Jedna noć u Miamiju" je znatno bolja od njegovog mogućeg oskarovskog konkurenta "Ma Rainey: Majka bluesa" s kojim dijeli kazališne korijene, prostorno-vremensku svedenost i likove iz stvarnog života.

Oba filma se odvijaju u približno realnom vremenu na jednoj lokaciji i počivaju na dijalozima i monolozima, a nastala su prema kazališnim komadima inspiriranim pravim, dobro znanim ljudima crne boje kože. No, dok "Ma Rainey" znade biti i teatralan kad u kadru nije sjajni Chadwick Boseman, a svakako je film vidljivog teatarskog podrijetla, "One Night In Miami" uspijeva zamaskirati kazalištarnost i nametnuti se kao životniji, ako ne i filmičniji komad angažirane karakterne i društvene drame.

Pred Reginom i njezinim glumcima nalazio se teži zadatak da izađu iz sjene istoimene predstave scenarista Kempa Powersa, ali i važnih figura iz života i filma. Južnjačka pjevačica Gertrude "Ma" Rainey nije ni blizu toliko poznata kao Ali, Malcolm X, Brown i Cooke, niti je imala filmske inkarnacije, kao što jesu neki od njih.

Will Smith je, recimo, glumio Alija, Denzel Washington, pak, Malcolma X-a, a obojica su, k tome, osvojili i nominaciju za Oscara za uloge u filmovima Michaela Manna i Spikea Leeja. Kingsley Ben-Adir i Eli Goree su veoma dojmljivi kao Malcolm X i Ali, tj. Cassius Clay, glumeći bez teškog tereta Washingtonovih i Smithovih izvedbi, a jednako su dobri i Aldis Hodge i Leslie Odom Jr. u ulogama Browna i Cookea.

Iako prednjače Ben-Adir i Odom Jr., teško je nekoga izdvojiti od pokera dobrih glumaca koji su udahnuli život legendama i jedna uloga je nemoguća bez druge, treće i četvrte, stoga bi bilo najpoštenije da nastave dobivati kolektivne nominacije i nagrade za glumački ansambl, odnosno konkurirati "Čikaškoj sedmorki".

Bez glumaca ne bi bilo "Jedne noći u Miamiju", a redateljica ih suvereno usmjerava kroz film kad treba i pušta na miru da sami oblikuju likove i sažive s njima na licu mjesta, ovisno o međusobnoj interakciji, što rezultira osjećajem spontanosti i životnosti, ne samo "štreberskim" recitiranjem teksta iz Powersova pera.

King se trudi načiniti film filmičnijim s prologom koji predstavlja glavne likove u različitim situacijama, nerijetko i eksterijerima, no "One Night In Miami" će prodisati punim plućima kad se stacionira u miamijskom hotelu gdje Brown, Malcolm X i Cooke dolaze proslaviti Cassiusovu frišku titulu prvaka svijeta u teškoj kategoriji, nakon što je pobijedio Sonnyja Listona, a netom prije nego što će službeno preuzeti ime Ali.

Interijeri više odgovaraju filmu baveći se internim razmišljanjima likova u ključnim trenucima njihovih života, kad se svaki od njih nalazi na ovom ili onom raskrižju ili na putovanju koje je "drukčije za svakog od nas", kako kaže Malcolm X. Clay postaje Ali, Brown je zakoračio u svijet filma...

Preko njih se prelama Amerika koja je sredinom šezdesetih također bila na raskrižju (godina je 1964.). Rasizam buja na sve strane, što je evidentno u uvodnoj sceni s Brownom i starim bijelcem (Beau Bridges) koji se divi popularnom sportašu, ali ga odbija pustiti u kuću; "crncima tu nije mjesto".

Zalomi se filmu poneka prenaglašena politička poruka, jer nije sve "crno i bijelo" kako tvrdi Malcolm X koji na prijatelje gleda kao na "oružja" u borbi za živote ("crnci doslovno umiru na ulici") i prigovara Cookeu što nije dovoljno aktivistički nastrojen kao pjevač, tj. glas naroda, puštajući pjesmu "Blowing in the Wind" i ističući da je bijeli Bob Dylan veći aktivist od njega.

Prava istina je sukus svih njihovih stavova, ne samo Malcolmovog "poziva za buđenje" kojim je trgnuo ostale pa i Cookea, skorog autora himničke pjesme "A Change Is Gonna Come". Međutim, većina onoga što su rekli u filmu, izgovarajući zamišljene riječi iz scenarija, lako je zamislivo da su izgovorili u stvarnosti te noći, nedugo prije nego što su ostavili vidljiv trag za sobom, svaki u svojoj domeni.

Malcolm X i Cooke su umrli u manje od godinu dana nakon ove noći u Miamiju, i to daje na dirljivosti priče o okupljanju četvorke koju King tretira prvenstveno kao ljude, a ne hodajuće političke parole. Takav je i film, najprije ljudski pa tek onda politički, koliko god njegova politika danas odzvanjala relevantnošću (George Floyd), opjevana stihovima "A Change Is Gonna Come". Stihovima o promjeni koja se nije još obistinila.

Regina King kao redateljica

Regina King je redateljsku praksu stekla režijom pojedinih epizoda serija, poput "This Is Us", "Animal Kingdom", "The Good Doctor"..., a potpisala je i jedan TV film i dokumentarac ("The Finest", "Story Of Village").
