Izvan konkurencije 16. Vukovarskog festivala hrvatsku premijeru je napokon doživio jedan od boljih filmova iz prošlogodišnje nezavisne američke produkcije – "The Card Counter", kultnog scenarista i režisera Paula Schradera.

Preveden konvencionalno-ziheraški kao "As u rukavu", "The Card Counter" je sve samo ne takav film. Schrader nije nikad bio konvencionalan i ziheraški filmaš ni kao pisac ("Taksist", "Razjareni bik", "Između života i smrti"), niti kad bi režirao ("U podzemlju seksa", "Američki žigolo", "Ljudi mačke", "Tihi spavač", "Divlji psi"...).

"As u rukavu" ima naizgled tipičnu premisu o kockaru/pokerašu željnom iskupljenja, ali je puno više od toga i pozicionira se kao jedan od najboljih uradaka u Schraderovu redateljskom opusu, koji puno duguje njegovim najboljim scenarijima napisanim za Martina Scorsesea, inače producenta ovog filma, ali i "Džeparu" Roberta Bressona.

"Taxi Driver" je polazna točka za "The Card Counter", od "voiceover" naracije osamljenog i otuđenog protagonista do atmosferičnih i apsorbirajućih noćnih kadrova natopljenih nesanicom, grijesima i samoćom, te političkog podteksta.

Travis Bickle je služio Americi u Vijetnamu, a William Tell (Oscar Isaac) radio je kao ispitivač-mučitelj zarobljenika iz američkog rata protiv terora u Abu Ghraibu, zbog čega je i proveo neko vrijeme u vojnom zatvoru gdje je "naučio brojati karte" i "zavolio rutinu", nositi istu odjeću, jesti istu hranu itd.

U "Taksistu" nije bilo flešbekova da otkriju grešnu prošlost lika, a u "Asu u rukavu" Schrader eksplicitno poseže za njima kako bi Williamova izolacija i želja za iskupljenjem bila izraženija. I "The Card Counter" je karakterna studija protagonista koji se pokušava iskupiti brigom za mladića, kao što se Travis brinuo za mladu curu.

Mladić je Cirk (Tye Sheridan, "Igrač broj 1", serijal "X-Men"), sin veterana koji je služio s Williamom i ubio se shrvan od osjećaja krivnje, zbog čega se on želi osvetiti njegovu nadređenom, majoru Gordu (Willem Dafoe), te moli kockara da mu pomogne.

William pristaje, ali pod uvjetom da mu se Cirk pridruži na pokeraškoj odiseji. "Ja sam kartaš, idem od grada do grada, od kasina do kasina... postaje usamljeno", veli William koji s Cirkom razvija mentorski odnos nalik onome u "Teškoj osmici" P.T. Andesona, ali (ni) "As u rukavu" nije pokeraški film, iako se otvara krupnim planom karte kraljice i promatra igrače na kartaškim natjecanjima, gdje William upoznaje tamnoputu ženu La Lindu (Tiffany Haddish) koja će "probuditi nešto u njemu".

Ovo je film o pokerašu, ne o pokeru, kao što je "Raging Bull" bio film o boksaču, a ne o boksu. Jake LaMotta je u ringu bježao od sebe i krvlju ispirao svoje grijehe, a Williamov prostor za unutarnje borbe protiv vlastitih demona jesu kasino i kockarski stol. On igra poker kao što insomničar Travis vozi taksi – da okupira misli, "ubije vrijeme", pronađe neki smisao. "Ako ne igraš za pare, zašto igraš?" pita ga La Linda. "Da mi prođe vrijeme", odgovara William.

"Poker je samo čekanje", njegov je pogled na igru u kojoj "ne igraš protiv kuće, nego drugih igrača". Ustvari, William igra protiv samoga sebe u igri visokih uloga, onog nekadašnjeg sebe iz Abu Ghraiba, gdje je ostao psihički zatočen. Igra na sve ili ništa ne bi li ga pobijedio u Schraderovoj drami kriminalističkog prizvuka, režiranoj pokerskom "pobjedničkom rukom" s nizom izvanrednih scena.

Vizija Abu Ghraiba je košmarna vizija pakla.  Režiser koristi izobličene "fish eye" leće kamere na ekstreman način dok u neprekinutom kadru prolazi kroz beskrajne hodnike nalik tunelima (iz) pakla, od ćelije do ćelije koje kao da se "rascvjetavaju" ili rađaju jedna drugu. Takav je vjerojatno i um mentalno oštećenog čovjeka kakav je William, u koji Isaac i Schrader zaranjaju na dah.

Zatvorskim scenama kontriraju nokturalni prizori, osvijetljeni jarkim neonskim svjetlima i obogaćeni fotografijom Alexandera Dynana i glazbom Roberta Levona Beena, basista i jednog od osnivača grupe Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Ovdje je Schrader posnimio ponajbolje kadrove u redateljevoj karijeri. Prednjači kadar koji nastavlja tamo gdje je Schrader, inspiriran klasikom "Pickpocket", stao u filmovima "American Gigolo" i "Light Sleeper". Kadar prstiju kako se spajaju razdvojeni zatvorskim staklom.

Od oca do sina Beena

Kao "As u rukavu" već je bio naslovljen "Ace In The Hole" Billyja Wilder s Kirkom Douglasom i "Smokin' Aces" Joea Carnahana s nizom poznatih glumaca kao što su Ray Liotta, Ryan Reynolds... Robert Levon Been je sin Michaela Beena; otac je radio pjesme za "Izgubljene dječake" i "Tihog spavača", a glumio je i u Scorseseovu "Posljednjem Kristovom iskušenju" za koji je scenarij napisao Schrader.

Izvan konkurencije 16. Vukovarskog festivala hrvatsku premijeru je napokon doživio jedan od boljih filmova iz prošlogodišnje nezavisne američke produkcije – "The Card Counter", kultnog scenarista i režisera Paula Schradera.

Preveden konvencionalno-ziheraški kao "As u rukavu", "The Card Counter" je sve samo ne takav film. Schrader nije nikad bio konvencionalan i ziheraški filmaš ni kao pisac ("Taksist", "Razjareni bik", "Između života i smrti"), niti kad bi režirao ("U podzemlju seksa", "Američki žigolo", "Ljudi mačke", "Tihi spavač", "Divlji psi"...).

"As u rukavu" ima naizgled tipičnu premisu o kockaru/pokerašu željnom iskupljenja, ali je puno više od toga i pozicionira se kao jedan od najboljih uradaka u Schraderovu redateljskom opusu, koji puno duguje njegovim najboljim scenarijima napisanim za Martina Scorsesea, inače producenta ovog filma, ali i "Džeparu" Roberta Bressona.

"Taxi Driver" je polazna točka za "The Card Counter", od "voiceover" naracije osamljenog i otuđenog protagonista do atmosferičnih i apsorbirajućih noćnih kadrova natopljenih nesanicom, grijesima i samoćom, te političkog podteksta.

Travis Bickle je služio Americi u Vijetnamu, a William Tell (Oscar Isaac) radio je kao ispitivač-mučitelj zarobljenika iz američkog rata protiv terora u Abu Ghraibu, zbog čega je i proveo neko vrijeme u vojnom zatvoru gdje je "naučio brojati karte" i "zavolio rutinu", nositi istu odjeću, jesti istu hranu itd.

U "Taksistu" nije bilo flešbekova da otkriju grešnu prošlost lika, a u "Asu u rukavu" Schrader eksplicitno poseže za njima kako bi Williamova izolacija i želja za iskupljenjem bila izraženija. I "The Card Counter" je karakterna studija protagonista koji se pokušava iskupiti brigom za mladića, kao što se Travis brinuo za mladu curu.

Mladić je Cirk (Tye Sheridan, "Igrač broj 1", serijal "X-Men"), sin veterana koji je služio s Williamom i ubio se shrvan od osjećaja krivnje, zbog čega se on želi osvetiti njegovu nadređenom, majoru Gordu (Willem Dafoe), te moli kockara da mu pomogne.

William pristaje, ali pod uvjetom da mu se Cirk pridruži na pokeraškoj odiseji. "Ja sam kartaš, idem od grada do grada, od kasina do kasina... postaje usamljeno", veli William koji s Cirkom razvija mentorski odnos nalik onome u "Teškoj osmici" P.T. Andesona, ali (ni) "As u rukavu" nije pokeraški film, iako se otvara krupnim planom karte kraljice i promatra igrače na kartaškim natjecanjima, gdje William upoznaje tamnoputu ženu La Lindu (Tiffany Haddish) koja će "probuditi nešto u njemu".

Ovo je film o pokerašu, ne o pokeru, kao što je "Raging Bull" bio film o boksaču, a ne o boksu. Jake LaMotta je u ringu bježao od sebe i krvlju ispirao svoje grijehe, a Williamov prostor za unutarnje borbe protiv vlastitih demona jesu kasino i kockarski stol. On igra poker kao što insomničar Travis vozi taksi – da okupira misli, "ubije vrijeme", pronađe neki smisao. "Ako ne igraš za pare, zašto igraš?" pita ga La Linda. "Da mi prođe vrijeme", odgovara William.

"Poker je samo čekanje", njegov je pogled na igru u kojoj "ne igraš protiv kuće, nego drugih igrača". Ustvari, William igra protiv samoga sebe u igri visokih uloga, onog nekadašnjeg sebe iz Abu Ghraiba, gdje je ostao psihički zatočen. Igra na sve ili ništa ne bi li ga pobijedio u Schraderovoj drami kriminalističkog prizvuka, režiranoj pokerskom "pobjedničkom rukom" s nizom izvanrednih scena.

Vizija Abu Ghraiba je košmarna vizija pakla.  Režiser koristi izobličene "fish eye" leće kamere na ekstreman način dok u neprekinutom kadru prolazi kroz beskrajne hodnike nalik tunelima (iz) pakla, od ćelije do ćelije koje kao da se "rascvjetavaju" ili rađaju jedna drugu. Takav je vjerojatno i um mentalno oštećenog čovjeka kakav je William, u koji Isaac i Schrader zaranjaju na dah.

Zatvorskim scenama kontriraju nokturalni prizori, osvijetljeni jarkim neonskim svjetlima i obogaćeni fotografijom Alexandera Dynana i glazbom Roberta Levona Beena, basista i jednog od osnivača grupe Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Ovdje je Schrader posnimio ponajbolje kadrove u redateljevoj karijeri. Prednjači kadar koji nastavlja tamo gdje je Schrader, inspiriran klasikom "Pickpocket", stao u filmovima "American Gigolo" i "Light Sleeper". Kadar prstiju kako se spajaju razdvojeni zatvorskim staklom.

Od oca do sina Beena

Kao "As u rukavu" već je bio naslovljen "Ace In The Hole" Billyja Wilder s Kirkom Douglasom i "Smokin' Aces" Joea Carnahana s nizom poznatih glumaca kao što su Ray Liotta, Ryan Reynolds... Robert Levon Been je sin Michaela Beena; otac je radio pjesme za "Izgubljene dječake" i "Tihog spavača", a glumio je i u Scorseseovu "Posljednjem Kristovom iskušenju" za koji je scenarij napisao Schrader.
